Chapter 1

On my five-year-old son's fifth day at human school, he ran to me wearing one shoe and grinning like he'd won a prize.

“Human kids love treasure hunts, Mommy. They hid the other one really well.”

Then he told me a boy had eaten his lunch because “maybe he was hungry,” that someone had thrown his wolf jacket away because “humans don't like wolf pictures,” and that he'd scrubbed himself with soap three times after his classmates said he smelled wrong.

I was still trying to tell myself five-year-olds could be cruel without understanding it when Theo Whitmore pointed at me and laughed.

“Your mom is poor because she doesn't even have a job.”

Milo hit him for the first time all week.

Theo's mother shoved my son away from hers, and I caught Milo before he hit the floor.

He patted my cheek instead of crying.

“Don't be mad, Mommy. I think that's how human moms say hello.”

Then I saw the crack running through the black bracelet hiding my son's Alpha-heir scent.

I sent one message to the only number I was never supposed to use at school: SEAL BREACHED.

My secure phone turned red before I could put it away.

***

Standing outside the wrought-iron gates of Westbridge Academy, I kept my eyes fixed on the heavy oak doors. For the past four days, the routine had been exactly the same. The afternoon bell would ring, the doors would swing open, and my five-year-old son, Milo, would sprint into my arms, grinning from ear to ear to tell me that human school was fun.

I desperately needed that smile today. It was the only thing keeping me grounded in this suffocating reality.

Three months ago, the Red Fang assassins had picked up the scent of the Blackthorn pack’s only heir. To keep Milo alive, I had stripped away my title as Luna, packed our lives into a single duffel bag, and become Nadia Vale. I enrolled him in this human kindergarten, a place completely disconnected from the werewolf registry. His father, Ronan, possessed an Alpha scent so dominant it acted like a beacon for our enemies. Because of that, my mate was reduced to a shadow, only able to visit us through a safe-house window in the dead of night.

The heavy doors finally opened, spilling a chaotic wave of children onto the sidewalk.

Milo spotted me and ran over, his face lit up with that familiar, beaming smile. But as he got closer, my chest tightened. He was limping slightly, his left foot clad only in a bright blue sock.

"Milo, sweetie, where is your other sneaker?" I asked, dropping to one knee.

"It was a treasure hunt today, Mommy!" he announced, his voice bubbling with genuine excitement. "It was super hard. Theo hid my shoe in a secret spot, and even the teacher couldn't find it."

I forced a smile, trying to convince myself it was just a harmless prank between boys. I pulled his spare sneaker from my tote bag. "Well, we can look for it tomorrow. Did you at least eat your lunch? I packed your favorite turkey sandwich."

Milo shook his head, completely unbothered. "Theo ate it. He looked really hungry when he stared at my box, so I let him have it. I drank a whole bunch of water from the bathroom sink instead, so my tummy is completely full. It’s okay!"

I froze, the laces of his spare shoe slipping from my fingers. I leaned in closer to brush his bangs out of his eyes, and a harsh, stinging scent assaulted my nose. It smelled like industrial floor cleaner and cheap hand soap.

"Milo, why does your hair smell like that?"

His smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he puffed out his chest. "One of the boys told me I had a wet dog smell. I know human noses are way more sensitive than ours, Mommy. I didn't want to make anyone sick, so I went to the bathroom during naptime and washed my hair three times."

My stomach turned into a hard knot. "And your jacket? The one with the little wolf paws on the hood?"

"Oh, they threw it in the trash can," he said, kicking at the pavement. "I think human kids just don't like wolf pictures. It's fine, I don't need it."

I was done making excuses for these kids.

I stood up, taking Milo’s small hand in mine, and marched toward the classroom door to find his teacher. Before we could even cross the threshold, a boy with messy blonde hair stepped right in our path.

"Poor wolf boy!" Theo yelled, pointing a finger directly at Milo’s chest. Then, his gaze shifted to me, his upper lip curling into a sneer. "Your mom is poor because she doesn't even have a job."

For the past five minutes, Milo had brushed off a stolen shoe, a stolen lunch, and being told he stank. He had absorbed every single insult directed at him with a smile. But the moment Theo insulted me, the bright, innocent light vanished from my son’s eyes.

Milo lunged forward, shoving Theo hard in the chest.

Theo hit the floor on his backside and immediately started wailing.

"Milo!"

The teacher materialized from the doorway, her face flushed with annoyance. She bypassed Theo entirely and clamped her hand down on Milo’s upper arm, pulling him back. "You are being aggressive again! What did I tell you about keeping your hands to yourself?"

She didn't ask what happened. She didn't ask why Theo was screaming insults.

Before I could tear the teacher’s hand off my son, a woman in a sharp designer suit stormed over, her stilettos striking the pavement with aggressive force. Vanessa Whitmore.

She shoved past me and yanked Theo up, shielding him behind her legs.

"Take your hand off my child," I warned the teacher, my voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet register.

The teacher quickly let go, stepping back, but Vanessa merely scoffed. She looked me up and down, taking in my plain jeans and faded sweater.

"I should have known," Vanessa said, her tone heavy with absolute disdain. "Kids from this kind of family never have any manners. You’re raising a little thug."

Milo stepped forward, his small hands balled into fists. "I just didn't want him to say mean things about my mommy. I was trying to explain—"

He reached his hand out, a childish instinct to make her understand.

Vanessa didn't even hesitate. She swung her arm and slapped Milo’s hand away with a hard, vicious swat.

The force of the strike sent Milo stumbling backward. His heel caught on the edge of the doorway, and he pitched backward, right toward the sharp metal corner of the cubby shelves.

My heart stopped. I dove, catching him by the waist just inches before his spine slammed into the metal edge.

A low growl vibrated in the back of my throat. I didn't care about the alias anymore. I didn't care about the human rules. I was going to break Vanessa Whitmore’s wrist.

I shifted my weight to stand, but a tiny hand pressed flat against my cheek.

"Mommy, don't be mad," Milo whispered. His eyes were wide, completely devoid of tears. "I think that's just how human moms say hello."

The rage in my chest instantly turned to ice.

I stared down at my son. He wasn't crying. He wasn't upset. He honestly believed he deserved to be treated this way. The absolute conditioning of his innocence terrified me more than any assassin ever could.

I didn't say another word to Vanessa. If I opened my mouth, I would rip her throat out. I scooped Milo into my arms, turned my back on the school, and carried him straight to the car.

Once we were safely inside the parked sedan, I set him in his booster seat but didn't start the engine.

"Milo," I said, keeping my voice as steady as possible. "Did these games with Theo and the other kids only happen today?"

Milo looked down at his hands, then started counting on his little fingers.

"On Monday, Theo ripped off my name tag. He said kids who don't have dads coming to pick them up don't need full names." He folded down his index finger.

"On Tuesday, someone put my water cup right next to the toilet. I didn't want to drink it, but I thought maybe it was a human bathroom rule." He folded down his middle finger.

"Yesterday, the teacher made me wait until everyone else got their snacks. She said I probably don't eat much at home anyway, so I didn't need to be first."

He looked up at me, a proud little smile touching his lips. "But I figured it all out, Mommy. I didn't cry, and I didn't bother the teacher. I'm getting really good at human school."

My vision blurred. He wasn't adapting. He was being trained. These people were actively teaching my son to accept their cruelty as normal, everyday tasks he was meant to solve on his own.

I leaned over the console and pulled him into a crushing hug, burying my face in his shoulder. As I wrapped my arms around him, my thumb brushed against his left wrist.

I felt a sharp, jagged edge.

I pulled back instantly, grabbing his arm. The thick black band secured around his wrist—the scent-seal bracelet designed to suppress his Alpha-heir aura—was damaged. A thin, jagged crack ran directly through the center of the casing.

Right over the fracture, a greasy, oily fingerprint stained the matte black surface.

"Milo, what happened to your bracelet?" I asked, my pulse hammering against my ribs.

"During art class, a big kid said it looked like cheap plastic," Milo explained, rubbing his wrist. "He took it off me, and then everyone passed it around to see how heavy it was. They gave it back, though."

They had touched the core.

I didn't let a single ounce of my Luna aura slip. If I panicked, if I released any of my own scent in distress, the Red Fang trackers would lock onto our location in seconds.

Moving with practiced precision, I reached into my pocket, peeled the backing off an emergency foil seal, and pressed it tightly over the crack in his bracelet.

"It's okay, baby," I whispered, kissing his forehead.

With one arm wrapped tightly around my son, I used my free hand to pull out my phone. I opened the encrypted messaging app that connected directly to Ronan. We had an ironclad rule: I was never to use the emergency channel unless we were compromised.

I typed the four words that signaled a total loss of control.

SEAL BREACHED.

I hit send.

Before I could even lock the screen, the bloodline monitor app running in the background of my phone buzzed violently.

The interface, which had glowed a steady, reassuring green for the past three months, flickered.

Under ten seconds later, the screen flashed a blinding, violent red.

Milo’s Alpha-heir scent hadn't just leaked. It had already registered outside the Pack’s protective zone.
