Chapter 4

Camden started working from home.

Not sometimes. Every day. He set up his laptop at the kitchen table and took calls with his back to the window. Between meetings he'd appear in the doorway of whatever room I was in. Just checking. Just making sure I was okay.

He cooked dinner every night. Salmon because it was good for the baby. Spinach salads. Whole grains. He'd plate everything carefully and watch me eat like he was monitoring a medical procedure.

"You need to keep your strength up," he'd say. His hand would rest on my shoulder. Warm. Heavy.

I'd nod and take another bite and feel the food stick in my throat.

My phone lit up constantly. Malia.

*Tess, please. Can we talk?*

*I know you're angry. You have every right. But we've been friends for too long to let this destroy us.*

*It wasn't supposed to happen. You have to believe me. It just... grew into something neither of us could control.*

I read every message twice. Let them sit unanswered in my notifications. Watched the count climb.

She never said the word *affair.* She never said *betrayal.* She said *complicated* and *messy* and *something that got away from us,* like it was weather. Like it was something that just happened to them instead of something they chose. Every single day. For five years.

I didn't respond.

Camden noticed. "She's trying," he said one morning. Coffee in front of me. Decaf now. Everything was different now. "Maybe you could... I don't know. Let her know you're okay?"

I looked up at him. "Why?"

His expression flickered. "Because she cares about you. Because you two have been friends since—"

"Since when?" My voice came out flat. "Since prep school? Since before you were secretly married to her? I'm trying to figure out the timeline."

He flinched. Actually flinched. Then his face smoothed over. Crisis management mode.

"You're upset. That's fair. But stress isn't good for—"

"Don't." I stood. The chair scraped loud against the floor. "Don't tell me what's good for the baby. Not you."

I walked out. Locked myself in the bathroom. Sat on the edge of the tub and stared at the tiles until my breathing evened out.

When I came back out, Camden was gone. A note on the counter. *Had to go into the office. Back by six. I love you.*

I tore it into small pieces and threw it away.

The knock came three days later.

I was lying on the couch, staring at the ceiling, when I heard it. Soft. Tentative. Not Camden's knock. He used his key.

I got up slowly. My body still felt fragile. Like something that had been broken and glued back together wrong.

Through the peephole I saw a woman I didn't recognize. Middle-aged. Professional-looking. And beside her, holding her hand, a small boy in a navy blazer.

My heart stopped.

I opened the door.

The woman smiled. Polite. Practiced. "Ms. Ellis? I'm Claire. Mr. Rivera asked me to bring Tripp by. He thought—" She glanced down at the boy. "He thought it might be good for everyone to meet."

The boy—Tripp—looked up at me.

He had Camden's eyes. Exactly. The same dark brown. The same shape. But where Camden's eyes were controlled, calculated, this child's were flat. Empty. Like looking into a well with no bottom.

He didn't smile. Didn't say hello. Just stared.

"Hi," I managed. My voice sounded strange. High.

Claire's smile tightened. "Tripp, say hello to Ms. Ellis."

The boy's mouth didn't move.

I stepped back. Gestured them inside because I didn't know what else to do. Claire guided Tripp in, her hand firm on his shoulder. He moved stiffly, like a wind-up toy.

They sat on the couch. Tripp's feet didn't touch the floor. His hands rested precisely on his knees. His blazer had a small monogram on the pocket. *TR.*

Tripp Rivera.

Camden's son.

The son he'd hidden for five years.

"Can I get you anything?" I asked Claire. My hostess training kicking in. Automatic.

"We're fine, thank you." She looked at Tripp. "Aren't we?"

Tripp said nothing.

I sat in the chair across from them. My hands twisted together in my lap.

"Mr. Rivera thought it would be good for Tripp to meet you," Claire said. Her tone was careful. Like she was delivering a script. "He's been asking about his father. About... the family situation."

Family situation.

I looked at the boy. He was still staring at me. His face showed nothing. No curiosity. No shyness. Nothing.

"How long have you been back in New York?" I asked him directly.

He blinked once. Slowly.

"Three days," Claire answered for him. "He's been at school in Switzerland. But Ms. Washington thought—"

"Malia brought him back." Not a question.

Claire nodded.

I looked at Tripp again. At his small, still face. At the way his hands hadn't moved from his knees.

"Do you like New York?" I tried.

His eyes didn't leave mine. "My parents are supposed to be together."

The words came out flat. Matter-of-fact. Like he was stating the weather.

Claire's hand moved to his shoulder. "Tripp, we talked about—"

"You're the reason they're not." His voice didn't rise. Didn't change. Just that same flat certainty.

The air left the room.

Claire stood quickly. "I'm so sorry, Ms. Ellis. He's been through a lot. We should go."

She pulled Tripp to his feet. He didn't resist. Didn't look away from me. Just kept staring with those empty, bottomless eyes.

At the door, Claire turned back. "Mr. Rivera will call you. Again, I apologize."

Then they were gone.

I stood in the empty apartment. My hand on my stomach. Feeling the small life inside me that tied me to Camden. To Malia. To that small boy with his father's eyes and his mother's conviction that I was the problem.

The thing that needed to be removed.

I locked the door.

Then I checked it twice more.

And I thought: *He's five years old. He's just a child.*

But my hands were shaking.

And I couldn't make them stop.
