Chapter 6
By the time Ethan fell asleep, curled in Zara's guest bed with his toy car clutched in his hand, Audrey's heart was still racing.
Vincent stood near the window, hands in his pockets, shoulders tense like a man who had just found a piece of himself he never knew was missing.
She watched him silently for a long moment. The streetlights outside threw a soft golden glow across his face, highlighting the shadows beneath his eyes. He looked tired. But more than that he looked changed.
"He's beautiful," Vincent said quietly, still looking out the window.
Audrey swallowed, her voice soft. "I know."
A faint smile ghosted his lips. "He's got your smile. My eyes."
She wanted to say don't romanticize this, but the words stuck in her throat. Because the truth was she'd spent nights imagining this moment. And now that it was here, it hurt more than she expected.
"This doesn't change anything," she said carefully, wrapping her arms around herself. "You can't just appear after five years and... and expect everything to fall back into place."
He turned to her then, and his gaze was steady. "I don't expect that, Audrey. But I'm not leaving, either."
The way he said it firm, unshakable made her chest tighten.
"I built a life without you," she whispered. "I built a world for Ethan. A safe one."
"And I'm not here to destroy it," Vincent said. "I'm here to be a part of it."
Audrey took a step back, unsure if she was pulling away from him or from the memories clawing at her chest. "You make it sound so easy."
"It's not," he admitted softly. "I know I hurt you. I know you don't trust me anymore. But this isn't just about us now. It's about him."
The way he told him their son made something in her heart tremble.
She wanted to stay angry. She needed to stay angry. But standing here with him, hearing that soft crack in his voice when he talked about Ethan, made it harder to hold onto that wall.
Vincent took a slow step toward her. She didn't move away.
"You were always the only person who could undo me," he said, voice low, almost like a confession. "And even after everything, it's still you."
Her breath hitched. "Vincent..."
"I'm not asking you to love me again," he said, cutting her off gently. "But I'm asking for a chance. A real one. To be in his life. And maybe... to fix what they broke between us."
Her stomach knotted. They. That word again. Whoever had torn them apart five years ago hadn't just taken away their love they'd stolen time, family, a future.
"What if it's too late?" she whispered.
He took another step, close enough that she could feel his warmth. "It's only too late if you walk away again."
Her breath caught at the way he said again. Not cruel. Just honest.
"You don't get it," Audrey said shakily. "My life isn't the same anymore. I don't trust easily. I don't love the way I used to. I can't just"
"Then don't," he said softly. "Don't love me. Don't trust me. Just let me be there for him. That's all I'm asking."
For the first time that night, she saw it clearly not the ruthless CEO, not the boy she loved but a man stripped down to his rawest truth. A father begging for a place in his child's world.
Silence wrapped around them, thick and fragile. She exhaled slowly. "I'll think about it," she whispered.
Something flickered in his eyes not victory, but hope.
"Then that's all I need," Vincent said softly.
As Audrey turned to leave, Vincent's voice followed her.
"And Audrey... whoever hurt us five years ago? I'll find them. And this time, they won't win."
