Chapter 1

Kenneth Thomas’s childhood friend, Sydney Palmer, and I were set to be mated on the same day.

On the day of our ceremony, Kenneth left without a word, all to ensure Sydney wouldn’t be bound to the cold and ruthless Alpha of the Silver Fang Pack.

That very day, in front of everyone, Kenneth and Sydney completed their mark ceremony, leaving me humiliated and abandoned.

The entire pack was waiting to see how I, Margot Butler, and the Silver Fang Pack would handle this scandal.

But the next morning, Logan Moore, the so-called “cold-hearted Alpha,” arrived at my family’s estate, his expression unreadable yet resolute.

“Kenneth stole my mate,” he said, his voice steady but with an undercurrent of anger. “His debt, you’ll repay. We’ll be mated in ten days. Do you agree?”

I lowered my gaze, watching the koi fish swim lazily in the pond.

“I agree.”

---

“I accept your proposal.”

Perhaps surprised by my immediate agreement, Logan’s stoic expression faltered for a moment, a faint crease forming between his brows.

He raised his hand.

“A verbal agreement isn’t enough. Let’s seal it with a handshake.”

I couldn’t help but find it amusing—a handshake, as if we were striking a business deal. I raised my hand and shook his, his palm warm and firm against mine.

Afterward, Logan turned to leave, his movements brisk, but not before I noticed the faint flush creeping up his ears. He even left behind his scent pouch, something I picked up with a soft laugh. Who would’ve thought the fearsome Alpha of the Silver Fang Pack could be so endearingly awkward?

Kenneth had been the Gamma of the Blue Moon Pack, and my father had arranged our mate bond, believing it would strengthen our family’s position.

As the only daughter of the Butler family, I had no say in the matter.

I never expected Kenneth’s love—only his loyalty and respect.

Before the ceremony, I’d even asked him directly if there was anyone else in his heart.

He’d sworn there wasn’t, assuring me he was fully committed to our bond.

But on the day of our ceremony, he abandoned me for Sydney, leaving me to face the whispers and judgment of the entire pack.

I tossed another handful of fish food into the pond, watching the koi dart eagerly toward it.

So be it.

But I hadn’t expected Kenneth to have the audacity to show up at my family’s estate afterward.

I frowned, my expression darkening as I turned to face him.

“Kenneth Thomas, you’re freshly mated and basking in your new status. What brings you here?”

He paused, forcing a smile and offering me a shallow bow.

“Margot, I’ve come to apologize. I do care for you, truly.”

“But Sydney… she’s an Omega, fragile and alone. Our families have been close for years. I couldn’t let her suffer.”

So instead, he let me suffer, turning my family into the laughingstock of the pack.

The Butlers had served the Blue Moon Pack for generations. Did he think we were so easy to dismiss?

My anger simmered, and my voice was sharp.

“Kenneth, leave. Our bond is broken. From now on, we’re strangers.”

He frowned, stepping closer as if to reach for my hand.

“Margot, don’t be unreasonable. We had a formal agreement. It’s different with Sydney.”

“And she’s kind-hearted. You’ve always been alone; once you join our pack, you two could be like sisters.”

“But since I’ve already completed the mark ceremony with her, I’ll have to ask you to… accept a secondary role for now. In a few years, I’ll elevate you to my equal.”

I stared at him, my eyes widening in disbelief.

How could he even suggest such a thing? The Butlers were a respected lineage, and I was the only daughter of our house.

Even if I had to remate, I’d never lower myself to such a position.

I felt a cold wave of disgust wash over me, my hands trembling as I clenched the handkerchief in my grip.

I took a deep breath, stepping back and meeting his gaze with unwavering determination.

“A Butler will never be a second choice.”

My words were final, but Kenneth’s expression darkened, his patience wearing thin.

“It’s just a title,” he snapped, his voice rising. “Do you really think I’d let anyone disrespect you? Margot, stop being childish.”

Childish?

The audacity of him to call me childish, when he was the one who’d broken his word, humiliated me in front of the entire pack, and now had the nerve to demand I accept less than I deserved.

I stared at him, my gaze steady and unflinching.

“Kenneth Thomas, a Butler will never share her mate, and she will never be second to anyone.”

His face twisted with anger, any semblance of composure gone. He pointed a finger at me, his voice harsh.

“Margot Butler, you’re nothing but a rejected mate now. The whole pack knows you’ve been tainted by this scandal. Who would even want you?”

With that, he turned on his heel and stormed out.

I stood there, clutching the handkerchief so tightly my knuckles turned white.

The cold reality of his words sank in, but I refused to let them break me.

I should’ve let go of Kenneth long before the ceremony.

I had ironed the tablecloths myself that morning. All forty-two of them. I'd started at five, before the kitchen staff arrived, because the rental company had delivered them with creases in the wrong places and I knew—I always knew—that Wesley would notice. The Black Moon Pack's annual banquet was the kind of event that reflected directly on the Alpha's household, and for four years, that household had been my responsibility in every way that mattered and none of the ways that counted. I'm Ashlyn Weaver. Omega. Wolfless. And for reasons I told myself were noble for longer than I care to admit, I had become the invisible engine behind everything Wesley Ellis called his. By seven that evening, the storm had arrived. Rain hammered the tall windows of the banquet hall while I moved between tables with a clipboard, confirming centerpiece heights and checking that the heating units were set to the precise sixty-eight degrees Wesley required.

The three-hour drive from the Northern Alliance meeting should have felt like coming home. Instead, as I pulled through the gates of Silverstone Pack territory, an unsettling quiet pressed against my chest like a physical weight. The familiar sight of our pack house—its stone facade and wraparound porch that had always welcomed me—now felt cold, almost hostile. I parked near the front steps, expecting to see pack members going about their evening routines. Children should have been playing in the yard, adults chatting on porches, the usual warm buzz of pack life that made this place feel alive. Instead, the grounds were eerily empty. The few wolves I did encounter on my way to the house avoided my gaze entirely. Mrs. Henderson, who usually stopped to ask about Sophie's schoolwork, practically fled when she saw me approaching. Young Marcus, one of our patrol guards, actually crossed to the other side of the path rather than offer his customary respectful nod.

The sacred moonstone altar gleamed under the Hunter Pack House's crystal chandeliers, its ancient surface carved with symbols that had witnessed countless mate ceremonies over the centuries. I stood before it in the flowing white gown that had belonged to Ellis's grandmother, my hands trembling as I held the ceremonial silver chalice. The Alpha Mother, resplendent in her pristine white robes embroidered with golden thread, began the ancient incantation. Her voice carried the weight of tradition as pack members filled every corner of the great hall, their eyes fixed on Ellis and me with expectant reverence. "By the blessing of the Moon Goddess," she intoned, "we unite these souls in the sacred bond of mate and Alpha." Ellis stood beside me, magnificent in his formal black attire, his Alpha presence commanding even in this moment of ceremony. His dark eyes met mine as he took the chalice, and for a heartbeat, I felt the flutter of what I thought was love. How naive I was. "Tallulah Webb," he said, his voice carrying the ritual formality, "I claim you as my mate, my Luna, bound by moon and blood." The chalice passed to my hands, heavier than it should have been. The ceremonial wine within swirled like liquid rubies, and as I lifted it to my lips to speak my vows, something twisted violently in my stomach. "Ellis Hunter," I began, my voice barely above a whisper, "I accept you as my mate, my Alpha—" The words died as agony ripped through my abdomen.

The scent of antiseptic and herbs filled the air as I guided my mother's wheelchair into Lilith's treatment room. Hope fluttered in my chest—maybe this new healer could ease the chronic pain that had plagued my mother since the accident that left her paralyzed. "Thank you for coming," Lilith said, her voice dripping with false sweetness as she gestured toward the examination table. "I've been studying your mother's case. I believe my traditional methods might help where others have failed." My mother smiled weakly, her once-vibrant face now hollow with pain. "Anything that might help, dear. The pack doctor said there's little they can do." "I need to fetch some water," Lilith said, turning to me. "Would you mind? It's just down the hall." "Of course," I replied, squeezing my mother's hand before leaving them alone. The hallway seemed longer than usual.

The Blood Moon hung heavy in the night sky, casting everything in an eerie crimson glow that made the ceremonial circle look like it was bathed in blood. My husband, Hansford Burris, told me tonight was the most important night of his campaign. He handed me a glass of champagne, his face a perfect mask of concern, telling me to drink up so I could relax before meeting the "Shadow King" of D.C. who could secure his political future. I didn't know the golden liquid was laced with a high-dose sedative and hallucinogens. He hadn't brought me to this luxury hotel to celebrate; he had brought me here to be sold, trading my body to a stranger in exchange for a seat of power. In my past life, I trusted him. I drank the poison, woke up shattered, and spent the next five years being tormented by his abusive mother and publicly replaced by his mistress. I was eventually cornered and murdered by the very man I had supported with my family’s fortune, my death staged as a tragic accident to gain him sympathy votes. To him, I wasn't a wife or a partner. I was just an "asset" with a shelf life, a merchant’s good to be traded away. As the life left my body, I couldn't understand how the man who promised to love me forever could watch me choke without a hint of regret. Opening my eyes again, I was back in the St. Regis Hotel on October 14th, exactly five years ago. Hansford was standing there in his polished Armani suit, extending the same glass of drugged champagne toward me. "Gina, darling? Are you alright? Here. Drink this. It will help you relax." Looking at his handsome, lying face, I felt a cold clarity wash over me. I wasn't the naive rabbit he remembered. I took the glass, but I didn't swallow a single drop. This time, I was going to burn his world to the ground.
