Chapter 4

The endorsements start arriving three days after the Nighthollow gathering.

The first is from Dr. Isla Reyes of the Cedarfall Pack—a formal letter on official Healer stationery, recommending my herbal treatments for cross-pack adoption and offering to co-present at the exhibition. The second comes from Alpha Gregor of the Nighthollow Pack himself, a terse note that reads: "Your work speaks louder than your history. The lodge is yours if you need the space."

By the end of the week, I have six more. Healers. Betas. Even a Gamma from the Silverfang Pack who watched Bradley corner me on the observation deck and apparently decided she preferred my composure to his desperation.

I pin them to the wall above my workspace in the cabin—not out of pride, but as proof. Proof that the architecture of a new life is assembling around me, piece by piece, built on work rather than bloodright or fated claims.

My wolf stirs when I look at them. Not restless. Not aching. Just... awake. Present. Like she's been waiting two years for me to stop surviving and start building.

I work sixteen-hour days preparing the exhibition. The venue is a neutral-territory conservatory on the outskirts of Cedarfall—glass walls, high ceilings, natural light that makes the plants look like they're glowing. I spend my mornings transplanting seedlings into labeled clay pots, each one tagged with a small brass plate: *Valerian root—Healed Delta Marcus Lowe, Nighthollow Pack, fractured bond recovery.* *Chamomile—Healed Omega Sarah Vance, Redwood Pack, rejection trauma.*

The names matter. They're not anonymous case studies. They're wolves who trusted me when I had no rank, no pack, no credentials beyond the knowledge my mother taught me and the two years I spent learning what a severed bond does to a body.

Dr. Reyes visits on the fourth day. She walks through the rows of plants slowly, reading every label, her expression unreadable. Then she stops in front of a cluster of lavender I grew from seeds I collected during my first month as a rogue.

"This is extraordinary work," she says quietly.

I look up from the soil I'm packing around a root system. "Thank you."

"I mean it." She turns to face me. "Half the Healers in the Pacific Northwest can diagnose a broken bond. Maybe three of us can treat the symptoms long-term. You've built an entire framework."

I don't know what to say to that, so I just nod.

She studies me for a moment, her Healer's gaze sharp and assessing. "You know this exhibition is going to draw attention. The kind you might not want."

"I know."

"Good." She hands me a business card—cream-colored, embossed with the Cedarfall Healer's insignia. "If you need anything the day of, call me. I'll be there."

She leaves before I can thank her properly.

That night, I receive the first gift from Bradley.

It arrives in an unmarked box, delivered by a neutral courier who doesn't meet my eyes. Inside is a set of silver hair combs—delicate, expensive, the kind of thing an Alpha gives a Luna during courtship. There's no note.

I pack them back in the box and return them the next morning with a single word written on the courier receipt: *No.*

The second gift comes two days later. A first-edition herbal encyclopedia, leather-bound, worth more than my cabin's rent for six months. I return it the same way.

The third time, Bradley doesn't send a gift. He sends wolves.

Two of them—a Beta and a Gamma I vaguely recognize from the Ironveil inner circle—arrive at the conservatory while I'm setting up the irrigation system for the exhibition. They're polite. Formal. They ask if I have a moment to speak with Alpha Bradley regarding a "time-sensitive pack matter."

I'm holding a watering can. My hands are covered in soil. I look at them for three seconds, then turn back to the plants.

"No," I say.

The Beta clears his throat. "Miss Nelson, the Alpha respectfully requests—"

"No."

They leave.

The fourth time, Bradley comes himself.

I'm inside the conservatory, adjusting the angle of a display table, when I see him through the glass. He's standing in the parking lot, hands in his coat pockets, his posture carefully neutral. Not advancing. Not retreating. Just... there.

I straighten. Walk to the glass wall. Meet his eyes.

He doesn't move. Doesn't gesture. Doesn't mouth words or press his hand to the glass like this is some kind of romantic movie. He just looks at me with an expression I can't quite read—something between exhaustion and calculation.

I hold his gaze for three seconds.

Then I turn back to my work.

When I glance up again five minutes later, he's gone.

That night, Dr. Reyes calls. "The emissaries reported back to their Alpha. Apparently, you 'will not be moved.'"

"That's accurate," I say.

She laughs—short and sharp. "Good. The exhibition is tomorrow. Get some sleep."

I try. I lie in bed staring at the ceiling, my wolf quiet but alert, and I think about the rows of labeled plants waiting in the conservatory. The names. The wolves who trusted me. The foundation I've built one seed at a time.

Somewhere in Ironveil territory, Bradley is running out of time. The solstice is nine days away. His wolf is weakening—I heard it from a Nighthollow Beta who has a cousin in the Ironveil Pack. Apparently, Bradley's aura flickers now when he tries to command. Apparently, he's not sleeping.

I close my eyes.

My wolf settles.

Tomorrow, the entire Pacific Northwest will see what a rejected mate can build when she stops waiting for an Alpha to fix what he broke.

And the day after that, Lana Gomez will make the worst mistake of her life.
