Chapter 2

I don't sleep.

I spend the night in that motel room staring at the ceiling, listening to the rain slow to a drizzle and then stop entirely. My wolf is awake now. Not howling. Not restless. Just... present. Waiting.

Around dawn, I check out and drive to the cabin I've been renting on the edge of neutral territory—a small place with a working fireplace and a view of the forest. It's temporary. Everything has been temporary since I left Ironveil. But it's mine.

I make coffee. I sit at the small wooden table by the window and wait.

He arrives just after eight.

I hear the car before I see it—the low hum of an expensive engine pulling up the gravel drive. Through the window, I watch Bradley step out. He's wearing a dark coat, his hair slightly damp from the morning mist. In his hands is a wicker basket. I can see the tops of glass jars inside. Herbal teas, probably. The kind my mother sells in her shop.

He's thought this through.

I open the door before he knocks.

He looks up, and for a moment, something flickers across his face—surprise, maybe, or calculation. Then it smooths into the expression I watched him rehearse two years ago when he told the pack I wasn't enough. Soft. Careful. Vulnerable.

"Scarlett," he says quietly. His voice carries that particular warmth Alphas use when they want you to forget they can command you. "Thank you for seeing me."

I step aside. He comes in, sets the basket on the table, and turns to face me. His Alpha aura is barely there—just a whisper of authority, like he's trying to mimic safety instead of dominance.

"I brought you something," he says, gesturing to the basket. "Chamomile. Lavender. The kind you used to drink before... before everything."

I don't touch it.

He takes a breath. "I know yesterday was—" He stops. Rubs the back of his neck. "I should have come out. I should have opened the door. I was... I was afraid."

"Of what?" My voice is quiet. Neutral.

"Of seeing you and not knowing what to say." He looks at me with those dark eyes that used to make my wolf ache. "My wolf has been howling for you, Scarlett. Every night. I can't sleep. I can't lead properly. I keep thinking about the Come of Age Ceremony, about what I did, and I—" His voice cracks. Actual tears gather at the corners of his eyes. "I was wrong. I was so wrong."

I blink slowly.

He keeps going. "I've been planning something. A solstice Mate Ceremony. Private. Just us and the Moon Goddess. No pack politics. No pressure. I want to do this right. I want to mark you the way I should have two years ago. I want—"

"Stop."

He stops.

I reach into my bag—the same one I carried yesterday in the rain—and pull out the documents. The full bloodright decree. Every page. I set them on the table between us with the same precision I use when laying out surgical instruments in my healing work.

Bradley's eyes drop to the papers. His expression freezes.

I watch him read the top page. Then the second. His jaw tightens. His hands curl into fists at his sides. The vulnerability drains from his face like water through a sieve, leaving something harder underneath.

"Who gave you that?" His voice is different now. Clipped.

"Does it matter?"

He looks up at me, and for the first time since he walked in, I see him clearly. The calculation. The anger. Not shame. Not remorse. Just fury that his plan didn't work.

"Scarlett." The Alpha tone surfaces—not loud, but unmistakable. A command wrapped in my name. "Sit down. Let me explain."

My wolf doesn't move.

Two years ago, that tone would have made my knees buckle. Two years ago, I would have obeyed without thinking, because that's what you do when your fated mate speaks with Alpha authority.

Now, I just stand there.

Bradley's eyes widen slightly. He tries again, harder this time. "Sit. Down."

Nothing.

I take a breath. When I speak, my voice is so quiet he has to lean forward to hear it.

"I will never accept your bond again."

His face goes pale.

"Standing in the freezing rain yesterday was the last thing I will ever endure for your name," I continue. "You didn't come back because your wolf was howling. You came back because your grandmother made sure you couldn't keep what you stole unless you fixed what you broke. And you waited until three weeks before the deadline to try."

He opens his mouth. Closes it.

"You rehearsed a Marking Ceremony with Lana while I stood outside your door," I say. "You laughed about me in a group chat. You told your wolves to let me freeze because you thought I'd crawl back."

His hands are shaking now.

I pick up my bag. I walk past him toward the door. He doesn't move to stop me—his Alpha aura is still trying to find purchase, but my wolf has already decided he doesn't exist.

I pause at the threshold and look back once.

He's standing there holding the bloodright documents in both hands, his carefully constructed tenderness completely gone. He looks smaller somehow. Hollowed out.

"The solstice is in three weeks," I say. "Good luck."

Then I walk out into the morning air, leaving Bradley Cole alone with his herbal teas and his shattered plan, and for the first time in two years, my wolf settles.

Not in peace.

In victory.
