Chapter 1

I begged my husband to spend more time with our daughter, and he finally agreed, taking her to our mountain estate.

When I found her late the next night, she was already gone.

She lay at the foot of a cliff, her small body cold, the protective locket I’d given her ripped from her neck.

Meanwhile, my husband was at a charity gala in Aspen, smiling beside his mistress and holding her daughter in his arms.

They looked like the perfect family.

The cruelest truth of all? The helicopter that was supposed to bring my daughter safely home from the mountain never arrived.

It had been diverted to Aspen—to pick up the woman and child.

The preliminary report called it an accidental fall from a height… The voice of the resort’s head of security sounded distant and blurry, as if coming from a great distance.

I saw nothing but my daughter, my precious, sweet Lily.

She was only six, an angel who had strayed into the mortal world. Her eyes, once as soft and hazy as morning mist in the woods, were now closed forever.

I knelt beside her frigid body, holding her small, scratched hands.

The custom platinum locket I had put on her myself—a talisman with a GPS tracker and an emergency button—was gone.

“Lily, look at Mommy. Please open your eyes. Let’s go home, and I’ll read you your favorite storybook, okay?”

My voice trembled and broke. “How could you sleep here all alone, my baby?”

No matter how I called her, she didn’t respond. In that moment, my tears finally broke free.

It was the early hours of the morning. A few hours ago, I had found Lily at the bottom of a cliff on the Thorne family’s private mountain estate.

This weekend was supposed to be my wedding anniversary with her father, Julian Thorne.

Yesterday, he had insisted on bringing Lily here, citing “an important business negotiation” and a chance to spend a few days alone with his daughter.

I saw them off at the helipad.

“Are you excited to go play on Daddy’s mountain, Lily?” I had asked her.

She nodded vigorously, her little face full of anticipation, but then she clutched the corner of my shirt, a trace of unease in her eyes.

My sweet daughter had developed selective mutism after witnessing an accident when she was very young.

I remember kneeling to comfort her. “Don’t be scared. Daddy will be there. He’ll protect you.”

To be a better mother to Lily, I had long since given up my career as a photographer and any chance of winning awards. My life as Mrs. Thorne demanded it.

I thought my sacrifice would earn me a shred of pity and fatherly love from Julian.

But Julian just glanced impatiently at his watch. “Avery, we have to go. Don’t keep her waiting.” He was talking about the other party in his business negotiation.

Julian wouldn’t let me come along. He said my presence would distract him.

And Lily just wanted to be with her dad, even if only for two days. It was her one wish for the year.

“Okay, okay.” Before the cabin door closed, I did one last check of the platinum locket on her chest.

“Baby, if anything happens, press this button. Mommy will be there right away.”

Lily couldn’t speak, but we had an agreement. Whenever she felt scared, she would press the button, and an alarm would blare on my phone.

I thought everything was foolproof. I thought she would be safe. I never imagined that would be the last time I’d see her alive, watching her small face through the cabin window.

The next morning, Julian didn't bring Lily home. I called him, but no one answered.

I rushed to the resort like a madwoman, only to find an empty house and a half-finished glass of cold juice.

It wasn't until late that night that I saw him on the news.

TMZ had published exclusive photos. During his so-called "important business negotiation," Julian was at a high-profile charity gala in Aspen with his mistress, Sienna Vance, and her daughter, Chloe.

In the photo, he held Chloe in his arms with a charming smile while Sienna clung intimately to his arm. They looked like a perfect family.

Sienna Vance, the heiress to Vance Tech and a board member of Thorne Industries. A woman I had known about for a long time but had fooled myself into pretending didn't exist.

He was a monster. A complete and utter liar.

But even then, I naively believed he would never harm his own daughter—not until I found Lily's body at the base of the cliff.

Her small body was scraped by the cold rocks, her skin drained of all color in the harsh wind. In that instant, my entire world shattered.

“Mrs. Thorne? It’s your husband on the phone. Do you want to take it?”

The security chief's voice pulled me back to reality. I looked down, staring at the name "Julian" on my phone screen.
