Chapter 3

The apartment had no furniture yet. Just bare wood floors and tall windows that let in the last gray light of a November afternoon. I stood in the doorway with a single suitcase and felt something strange settle over me. Quiet. Not the trained-still quiet I'd worn for eighteen years. Just quiet.

Tiana was already there, sitting cross-legged on the floor with a bottle of red wine and two plastic cups from the bodega downstairs. A takeout menu sat beside her like a place setting.

"You're late," she said. "I already ordered the dumplings."

"I don't have a key yet."

"I bribed the doorman." She poured wine into both cups and held one up. "Welcome home, Helena Brooks."

I hadn't heard my own name said like that in years. Not Mrs. Hawkins. Not somebody's wife. Just mine. I sat down across from her on the cold floor, took the cup, and let the first sip sit on my tongue longer than it needed to.

"This place is small," I said.

"It's yours." She said it flat, like a fact that didn't need decorating. "That's the whole point."

We ate dumplings out of the container with plastic forks. Tiana pulled a folder from her bag and slid it across the floor toward me. The cover said, in her handwriting, *Brooks & Lopez — Draft One.*

"What's this?"

"A business plan. I've been sitting on it for three years, waiting for you to get your act together."

I opened it. Pages of numbers, projections, a logo sketch in the corner that looked suspiciously like something I'd doodled on a napkin at her birthday dinner two years ago.

"You kept this?"

"I keep everything." She refilled her cup. "You were going to leave him eventually. I just didn't know it'd take a divorce lawyer and a ballroom full of witnesses."

I laughed. It came up from somewhere I didn't recognize, sudden and loud, and once it started I couldn't stop it. Tiana grinned and topped off my wine like she'd been waiting for exactly that sound.

"There she is," she said.

We talked until two in the morning, sitting on the floor because there wasn't a couch yet, sketching out names, arguing over fonts, laughing so hard at one point that my stomach hurt and I had to lie back against the bare wood and just breathe. I couldn't remember the last time laughing had cost me nothing.

"Okay," Tiana said, tapping the folder. "First project. I found something."

"Already?"

"A warehouse conversion in Tribeca. Six units, raw space, good bones. Seller wants it gone by end of quarter." She paused, watching my face. "Hawkins Global's acquisitions team is circling it too."

I didn't flinch. I'd expected his name to follow me. I just hadn't expected it this fast.

"Then we bid smarter," I said.

Tiana's eyebrows went up. "That's it? No hesitation?"

"Why would I hesitate?"

"Because eighteen months ago you were setting his table."

"Eighteen months ago I was also negotiating vendor contracts for three galas a year without anyone noticing." I picked up my wine. "I know how to win a bid, Tiana. I just never got to put my name on it."

She smiled slow, like she'd been waiting years to hear me say that.

We filed the paperwork two weeks later. The firm was small — six employees, a converted loft office two floors below my new apartment, a logo Tiana finally settled on after forty drafts. We put together the bid for the warehouse ourselves, staying up past midnight three nights running, going over every line until the numbers were tight enough to hurt.

The morning the results came in, Tiana called me before I'd even had coffee.

"We got it."

"What?"

"The warehouse. We got it. Beat Hawkins Global's team by two percent on the offer and a faster close date." She laughed, breathless. "Two percent, Helena. That's nothing. That's everything."

I sat down at my kitchen table — a real table now, one I'd picked myself, in a color I liked for no reason other than liking it — and let it land. Not triumph, exactly. Something quieter. Something that felt like ground under my feet for the first time in years.

Three days later, a friend at *Commercial Observer* sent Tiana a link with a single line of text: *look who's back.* It was a short item, buried in the deals section, nothing dramatic. Just a name in print.

*Boutique firm Brooks & Lopez secures Tribeca warehouse conversion, edging out larger competitor Hawkins Global.*

I read it twice. Helena Brooks. Not Mrs. Hawkins. Not a footnote in someone else's biography. My name, in a trade publication, for the first time in seventeen years.

I set my phone down on the table, poured myself coffee I didn't need, and sat there in the morning light of an apartment that belonged to no one but me, thinking that somewhere across town, Cristian was probably reading the same item and wondering, for just a second, who Helena Brooks used to be.

He was about to find out.

I was supposed to sell my soul to a monster to pay off my family’s debts. But when I sat down at Table 12, I didn't find a man in a leather jacket smelling of stale beer. Instead, I found a man in a bespoke suit who smelled of cedarwood and cold winter air, a man who looked at me like a specimen under a microscope. "Sit down," he commanded, his voice a deep rumble that vibrated in my chest. Before I could realize I was at the wrong table, he had already signaled the staff to throw the real loan shark out into the street. Then, he slid a blank black card across the table and offered me a deal: a marriage of convenience to satisfy his board of directors in exchange for my total protection. I signed the contract and moved into a penthouse he claimed belonged to his "boss," trying to play the part of the quiet, broken wife. But the lies were too loud to ignore. He called a half-million-dollar bottle of wine a "Costco blend" and claimed his $4 million Patek Philippe watch was a cheap replica. He thought he was protecting a helpless, mute girl, but he had no idea who I really was. I didn't understand why this "manager" had the police commissioner on speed dial or why he was tracking my every move with hidden cameras. While he was busy playing the savior, I was secretly logging onto the dark web as "The Surgeon," the only medical genius capable of treating the chronic, agonizing migraines he kept hidden from the world. The truth finally exploded when the loan shark cornered us at my aunt’s estate. As I held a corkscrew to a killer’s throat with surgical precision, I saw the mask slip from my husband’s face.
