Chapter 2

Valeria POV

Serena's smile had not yet fallen, but the muscles around her mouth seized, like a jammed cog in a watch piece. I did not pause to witness the pathetic theater of her guilt. I kept walking.

Silas moved with a speed I had only ever seen in a firefight. He crossed the space between us and his hand closed around my wrist. His large, calloused fingers were a manacle on my bare skin, and the friction of his touch brought my forward momentum to an abrupt halt.

He glared at me, the muscles in his jaw standing out like cords of rope, and warned me not to make a scene over a simple piece of fabric.

Then, seeing the undisguised disgust in my expression, he seemed to recoil. His voice dropped, losing its hard edge, as he claimed the Maid of Honor gown did not matter in the grander scheme of a syndicate wedding.

A wave of nausea, acrid and hot, rose from my stomach. The sight of his hand on my wrist—so forceful, so proprietary—was a brand searing itself into my memory.

With a sharp, wrenching motion, I tore my arm from his grasp, shaking him off with a look of pure contempt.

I turned to the terrified attendant hovering in the corner and, in a voice devoid of inflection, demanded a full refund for my white gown on the spot.

Silas dropped my wrist as if the skin had scalded him. His face turned a dangerous, uneven shade of red.

He stepped into my space, using his massive height to cast a shadow over me.

He asked if I was throwing a childish tantrum just because he escorted my best friend to a fitting. His voice was a low, threatening growl that seemed to vibrate in the floorboards.

He warned me about the catastrophic fallout with the Don if I dared to disrupt this union.

My phone pinged, the small, sharp sound cleaving the tense air. The bank notification lit up the screen. The refund for the white dress was processed.

I looked up at his angry face, my spine straight, my gaze unwavering.

"You will see how it ends on the wedding day."

I turned around and walked out of the boutique, the sharp report of my heels on the marble floor the only sound.

Serena called my name from the pedestal, her syllables drawn out, as if she were soothing a skittish animal.

From behind me, I heard Silas suppress his rage, harshly snapping at Serena that she was not allowed to stand in as the bride.

I drove back to the penthouse in a state of strange suspension. The silence of the luxury apartment, with its great panes of glass framing the sprawling city, no longer felt like a sanctuary. It felt like a cage.

There was no time for tears. Instead, I pulled out a stack of cardboard boxes from a storage closet.

I went into his massive walk-in closet and started packing his tailored suits, pulling them from their velvet hangers with methodical force.

I emptied his concealed safe and coolly packed his weapons, the chill of the steel a welcome numbness against my fingertips.

As I moved through the rooms, the blindfold fell completely from my eyes. The small, insidious details, once invisible, now assembled themselves into a coherent, mocking narrative.

I noticed Silas's silk ties were all subtly replaced with shades that matched Serena's favorite dresses.

His expensive house slippers matched her aesthetic, not mine. My own touches on this home—the cushions on the sofa, the art on the walls, the photographs in their frames—had been slowly, methodically erased over the last year.

The front door clicked open. The sound of heavy footfalls echoed in the foyer as Silas walked in.

He stopped dead in the hallway. He stared at the moving boxes stacked by the front door, his gaze narrowing to a slit.

His jaw locked so tightly a vein pulsed at his temple. He demanded to know what I was doing, his voice a low, lethal thing.

I kept my voice completely flat, a placid surface over a roiling depth. I told him he was moving out tomorrow.

His face darkened with absolute fury. He asked if I expected him to move into the newly purchased bridal estate, a sneer twisting his lips at the sheer audacity of my command.

He reminded me that the massive estate was currently occupied by Serena. He claimed she was hiding there from a rival family, presenting it as a matter of grave security.

He accused me of using a petty argument at a dress shop as an excuse to kick my own best friend out onto the dangerous streets.

I remembered the day Serena moved in there. I had begged Silas to let her stay to appease his strict security rules.

He had acted so annoyed. He had warned Serena she needed to leave soon, his tone heavy with false irritation.

I looked at him now, the architecture of his lies laid bare before me. I played a very calculated game.

I told him I only said he had to move in. I never said Serena had to leave.

I watched his face closely, waiting for the mask to crack.

Silas stopped breathing. For a long, drawn-out moment, the penthouse was dead silent.

Then, a spark of pure, undeniable excitement lit up his dark eyes, and in that flicker, I saw the truth of his depravity.

And in that moment, I knew exactly how I would destroy him.
