Chapter 2

OLIVIA'S POV

"Who sold it?"

Jack didn't answer, so I took the folder back out from under his arm. He let me this time. Maybe he was tired of pretending.

I flipped past the default notice to the second page, the one I hadn't gotten to before Blair pulled out her phone. A transfer summary. Buyer's name blacked out by a sticky note. Date of sale: January 14th.

Two months ago. I'd been in the kitchen that night, making his favorite chili.

"Jack. Who signed this?"

He rubbed the back of his neck. "I did, okay? I closed a sale. If I hadn't, the bank would've foreclosed, and you'd have walked away with nothing. I was protecting you."

"With what authority?"

"You gave it to me."

The scar on my left wrist started to throb, like it remembered before I did.

Eight months ago, a young mare had spooked at a plastic bag and thrown me into the rail. I'd shattered two bones. Jack had sat by my hospital bed all night, sorting the papers in that blue folder the nurses gave me, the one I still kept in the truck's glovebox. He'd tucked my hair behind my ear and said, "Just sign this, babe. Temporary authorization. I'll keep the loan current while you heal."

I'd read it with one good hand and a head full of painkillers. But I'd read it.

"That authorization was for ninety days," I said. "It covered loan payments. Nothing else. There was no line about selling anything."

"Lawyers interpret things differently."

"I gave you permission to handle a loan. I never gave you permission to sell my father's land."

Something flickered across his face. Not guilt. Annoyance, like I'd found a mistake in his math.

Behind us, leather creaked.

Blair had heard every word. She gathered the reins and gave them a sharp, ugly yank, and Copper's head jerked up. He backed off the boards and into the barn aisle, swinging his hindquarters sideways in the narrow space between the stalls. His shoulder bumped a stall door hard enough to rattle the latch.

Then I saw his back legs. Stiff, locked at the hock, the way they got on cold mornings before his joint supplement kicked in. He wasn't fit to carry anyone through tight turns. The vet had told us that last fall.

"Stop it," I said, already moving. "Blair, you're hurting him."

I caught his halter under the bridle and held his head steady. His front legs were trembling, small fast shivers running up from the knee.

"Get down. Now. He's twenty-six years old. Get off him."

Blair's mouth fell open, and her voice went up an octave. "She's attacking me! Jack, she's attacking me!"

She didn't even sway. She sat perfectly balanced in Dad's saddle, both white leather gloves on the reins, the diamond on her left hand bulging under the glove.

Jack's hands slammed onto my shoulders.

"Get your hands off her! She's pregnant, for God's sake!"

He shoved me. Not a push, a throw. My boots skidded on loose straw and I went down sideways, right into the corner of the old wooden feed bin. The edge caught my hip, and my hand scraped down the rough plank as I fell. Splinters drove into my palm like teeth.

I hit the floor. For a second I couldn't get air.

When I lifted my head, Jack wasn't looking at me. He had both hands on Blair's knee, steadying her, his face tipped up toward hers.

"You okay? Are you hurting anywhere?"

Pregnant.

I looked down at my palm. Blood welled out of a jagged line across the heel of my hand, and there was a dark smear of it on the feed bin's edge, soaking into the old wood.

I pushed myself up onto one knee and grabbed Copper's halter again, because he was still shifting, still scared, and nobody else was going to calm him.

"Is that true?" I said. "Blair, is that—"

She already had her phone up.

The little red dot glowed in the corner of the screen. LIVE. Comments were scrolling up the side.

Her face crumpled on cue. Tears, real ones, spilling down her cheeks.

"You guys, I'm so scared right now," she said into the camera. "She just went after me. She knows I'm pregnant, and she grabbed the horse to throw me off. She's so jealous she tried to hurt my baby."

The screen showed me exactly the way she wanted. Kneeling under the horse's head, gripping his halter, my hand bloody, my mouth open mid-sentence. No Jack. No shove.

"Turn that off," I said.

"See? See how she talks to me?"

I looked at Jack. "Tell her. Tell her camera what you just did."

He straightened up, one hand still on Blair's leg.

"Olivia, if you keep making a scene, I'm going to have to call the police."

"On me?"

"You put your hands on a pregnant woman."

"I put my hands on my father's horse." I wiped my palm against my thigh and left a red streak on my work pants. "Is it yours, Jack? The baby. Is it yours?"

The barn went quiet. Marco and Danny stood at the door with three of the other hands behind them, work gloves still on, nobody coming closer.

Jack didn't say no.

He didn't say anything for a long time. Then he lifted his chin.

"This engagement is over, Olivia. It's been over for a while. I just didn't have the guts to tell you."

"Because of a baby you made while I was in a cast."

"Because I'm done living in a museum." He gestured at the barn, the saddle, me. "Everything here is about your dad. His horse. His land. His rules. I'd choose her baby over your father's ghosts every single time."

I grabbed the silver band and twisted it off. My fingers were slick with blood, and it slipped out of my grip.

It hit the floorboards with a thin, cheap ping and rolled into the straw.

Nobody moved. Not one of the men at the door. The livestream kept running.

I reached down and picked the ring up out of the bloody wood shavings. I closed my hand around it. I didn't put it back on.

Jack took a breath, like he'd finally gotten the hard part over with.

"The ranch has been sold," he said. "You don't get to walk around here acting like the owner anymore. I want you packed and off the property tonight. Blair needs peace and quiet. She doesn't need you hovering around her and the baby."

"Then leave me my things," I said. "My clothes. Dad's tack. And Copper."

Blair lowered the phone a few inches, just enough to look at me over it. Her tears had dried fast.

"Copper?" she said. "Where exactly are you going to keep an old horse, Olivia? In your truck?"

One of her followers must have sent a laughing emoji, because she smiled at the screen.

Jack nodded at her like she'd made a good point.

"Be realistic, Liv. You've got no land, no money, and no one to call. Without me, you wouldn't make it through one winter."

I stood up.

My hip ached where the feed bin had caught it. Blood was drying stiff on my jeans. Over Jack's shoulder, nailed to the stall wall, was the faded photo of Dad holding Copper's lead rope the day he brought him home as a yearling, both of them squinting into the sun.

I looked down at Jack's shoes. Expensive leather, brown, splashed with mud from my arena. The shoes of a man who'd never fed a horse at five in the morning.

For the first time in five years, I didn't argue with him.

He took that as a win. I watched it settle on his face.

"You have until sunset to leave," he said. "Let's see how long you survive without me."

He turned back to Blair and lifted her down from the saddle like she was made of glass.

I stood in the aisle with the ring cutting into my palm, my father watching from the wall, and the sun already sliding toward the ridge.
