Chapter 2

Seraphina's POV

The sun had barely touched the horizon when the heavy click of the penthouse lock echoed in the foyer.

I was already waiting, my two large suitcases standing like sentinels beside the door. I had not slept. I had spent the night sitting on the edge of the ruined bed, turning the mint wrapper over and over in my fingers like a rosary, searching for a loophole in the evidence that would let me stay. By dawn, I had accepted there was none.

Julian walked in, holding a paper bag from my favorite bakery. The scent of fresh cornetti drifted through the foyer—the same pastries he had brought me every Sunday morning for seven years. His motion arrested the second he saw the luggage.

The air in the room grew thin and cold as his dark eyes found my face.

"Where precisely do you imagine you are going?" he asked, the commanding cadence of the Don settling over his words.

I held his gaze, ignoring the undertone of threat. "How long have you been sleeping with her?"

Julian flung the paper bag onto the dining table, the pastries tumbling out across the polished wood. He crossed the space between us in two long strides, his height a calculated instrument of intimidation.

"You're losing your mind," he snarled. "Carmela has been filling your head with her poison, just because her own husband was a worthless cur."

I said nothing. I opened my purse and withdrew the items I had found tucked away in the lining of his briefcase—found at four in the morning, when I had sat on the bathroom floor and methodically searched every compartment like a detective dismantling my own life.

I tossed them onto the glass table, one by one.

A hair tie, scented of strawberries. A cheap plastic keychain. A packet of makeup wipes, a brand I never used.

"My eyes are not the problem, Julian," I told him, my voice dangerously even. "These do not belong to me, and they do not belong to your soldiers."

Julian stared down at the small collection of damning objects. His face darkened, but the denial remained set in stone.

He shifted the blame. "You're being theatrical," he scoffed, recasting the girl's trespasses as some youthful ignorance of syndicate protocol. "This jealousy of yours is suffocating."

I stepped forward, closing the space he had tried to dominate. "Was it Valentina who taught you to lie so proficiently to your own betrothed?"

A stillness fell over him. In the long, stretched-out second that followed, his silence was a confession hammered in brass. Somewhere in the back of my throat, a sob pressed upward, but I forced it back down. I would not cry in front of this version of him.

The electronic lock beeped again.

The heavy door swung inward, and Valentina herself walked through.

She had used her clearance codes to enter our private rooms, unannounced and uninvited.

Draped over her arm was Julian's suit jacket, the sleeve stained with a dark smear of blood from some recent collection.

Valentina's high heel made a sharp, stuttering sound on the polished floor; her shoulders, which had been pitched forward with purpose, drew back in a pantomime of shock. She clapped a hand to her mouth, her eyes wide with feigned surprise at the sight of me and my luggage.

She played the part of the innocent subordinate, stuttering, "I-I was just returning the Boss's property before my shift."

Julian took a half-step away from me, moving toward her.

His rigid posture eased as he looked her over, his expression softening with a manufactured concern. He turned his head and threw his words at me like stones. "Look what you've done. You're creating a hostile environment for my staff."

A profound coldness settled in my marrow, a quiet, final death.

I had imagined this moment differently. I had thought I would scream, or weep, or demand that he choose. Instead, I felt something vital detach inside me, clean as a surgical cut. The man I had loved was not in this room. Perhaps he had never been.

Without a word, I took the handles of my suitcases and walked past them toward the door.

Julian did not order his guards to stop me. He did not ask where I was going. He just let me walk out.

An hour later, I was standing on the desolate sidewalk outside the high-rise.

The rain fell in cold, driving sheets, and I waited for the car Carmela had promised to send. The water soaked through my coat and plastered my hair to my scalp, but I barely felt it.

With a low groan of metal, the iron gates to the private courtyard opened.

Julian walked out into the storm, personally escorting Valentina to a waiting black car.

I stood in the freezing rain, soaked through.

Valentina was wearing my expensive trench coat. The one I had left in the hallway closet.

She looked past Julian's broad shoulder, and her eyes met mine across the rain-swept pavement. A small, vicious smile touched her lips.

Then, she cried out and stumbled on the wet flagstones, a deliberate, theatrical twist of her ankle.

Julian reacted instantly. He scooped the girl into his arms.

He held her tightly against his chest, murmuring reassurances against her hair.

He carried her to the car, completely ignoring his betrothed standing ten feet away in the downpour.

As the car door closed behind them, I stood motionless on the sidewalk, rain streaming down my face. I had spent seven years waiting for this man to choose me. He had just shown me, with perfect clarity, that he never would. The grief that settled over me was not sharp. It was dull and ancient, like the ache of a limb that had been amputated long before I noticed the wound.
