Chapter 2

Present Day

I blushed at what proved to be one of the greatest moments I have ever had. My smile grew wider still when I placed my hand on my stomach. Regardless of how nervous I was really in regards to the news, I couldn't wait to tell J'onn about it.

Wake up out of my beautiful thoughts which I did not want to escape, I tossed my duvet aside, rose from the bed, and went ahead to prepare for work.

Condex Niches was a very esteemed corporation owned by J'onn's parents. Aside from being tech experts, the family are also property experts, and they own upscale hotels and bars in the city.

On arriving at the company, I simply walked straight into the elevator which would take me to the 6th floor where my office was situated. I exited the lift when I arrived and took intelligent steps towards my office.

"Good morning, Ms. Bonn," said the receptionist on my floor in a polite manner.

"Good morning, Rickie," I also responded with a very polite smile.

Going to my office, I placed my bag on my desk and considered refreshing myself with my tea to get hydrated.

"Good morning," I greeted my co-workers as soon as I entered the kitchen.

"Hi Bonn, did you hear the news?" Rosemarie excitedly called out from where she was seated.

"What news?" I inquired not knowing, making my way towards them.

"Oh, you don't know already?" Mara smiled. "The Boss is off the market.".

My heart pounded as I stopped in my tracks.

"What? What boss?"

"Come on, do not be so melodramatic," Rosemarie rolled her eyes. "I am aware that we work for this company with many bosses responsible for various departments, but who do you think we would be discussing, feeling this way."

"Mr. Condex is marrying someone?" I was finally able to ask, glaring at my colleagues. I had known at some point that my boyfriend J'onn and I would be out there, but I certainly did not anticipate today because we've not even decided when precisely we wanted the world to know about it.

Yes! Bitch! What! What world do you even live in? Do you even watch the news?" Mara asked. Rosemarie giggled, "If I was her, I don't think that! "

! Yeah, you people don't! Need! To! Rub! It! In! My! Face! I do! Hear! The! News! But! Not! The! Gossip! Stations.

"How do you all know it's not regular gossip? This is not the first time we heard something like this." I said, it being absurd to think that the whole world knew me and J'onn.

"You should know us by now. We don't indulge in fake news or gossip," Mara smirked.

"Yes, the news was all over last night, but his sister confirmed it today in an interview."

"His sister?" I smiled when I heard that. J'onn's sister was a woman that I had always been infatuated with and admired from a distance, and the fact that she accepted our relationship made my heart feel so much warmer that I forgot my anxieties about announcing the relationship to the public.

"Despite the fact that I'm not very pleased about the fact that J'onn Condex is off the market and we can no longer make eyes at him, I'm happy for him, and the fact that it's actually good news amongst me these days," Mara simpered. "Let me take a look at that," she gestured to my hand.

My heart. "Yeah, me too. I never really got a good look at it," said Rosemarie.

I blushed and closed the gap between us and flashed my ring before them.

"How lovely," Rosemarie grumbled. "I could just imagine how terribly pretty J'onn's wife's ring would be."

My heart galloped. I thought that they already knew.

"You all do not know?"

The two exchanged puzzled looks.

"Oh sorry, what I mean is, you all do not know the bride?"

"Do you know her?" asked Mara.

"I'm just asking," I shrugged, trying to hide my nervousness.

"Oh, we don't know who yet, but it's definitely going to be a rich man's daughter, right Mara?"

"Of course. That's what always ends up happening in the end. The rich marry the rich and they get richer."

"I… I need to go."

"Already? I thought you might want to hang out with us for a little bit longer," Rosemarie spoke out.

"Sorry, I have work to do." I flashed them a smile that did not quite make it to my eyes and left the kitchen, completely forgetting the tea I had gone there for.

Returning to my office, I rummaged through my handbag in search of my phone. Facing the screen was like facing a splash of cold water; I released some air because I did not get any call or message notification.

Falling into the chair at my desk, I dropped my phone to the floor, opened my MacBook, and as soon as it loaded up, I went straight to the browser. I hadn't even been able to go look for the subject when I noticed that it was just sitting there in the trending list on my tab.

Out of curiosity, I hesitated and went through the contents. As Mara and Rosemarie explained, there would be a wedding, but the bride was not to be named.

A soft smile brushed my lips, aware that J'onn did it only to demonstrate respect for me and my privacy. Though I wished to know if his parents already welcomed me, I refrained from phoning J'onn so I could hear the good news firsthand from him.

I shut down the browser and started my day officially by getting down to work. I didn't know that I had been working for three hours until I finished my first task of the day. I got up, ironed my skirt, printed out the documents that I had worked on, grabbed the printed copies along with my phone, and exited my office.

Hi Rickie, where's Hona? I just came back from her office, and she's not here," I questioned the receptionist who was manning my floor.

"Miss Hona is in the meeting."

"Meeting?" I raised an eyebrow. "What meeting?"

"The launch meeting of the new product."

"Wasn't that at 2 pm?"

"I think it was moved to 8 am."

"What? Why didn't anyone tell me?

"I have no idea, Ma'am. But I'm certain that a circular was sent out announcing the change of time for the meeting."

"I refresh my email almost every hour. I did not see anything," I grumbled half-heartedly, trying hard if I saw any memo about a change of time of the meeting.

I was even more confused since Hona was a good colleague of mine or so I thought, and we would usually work together most of the time. If Hona indeed went to the meeting, I can safely say that Hona would have called or texted me that the meeting was about to start.

"I don't know, ma'am. But I was going to come see you in the office."

"Why?"

"HR wants to see you."

"Great! Because I need to meet him too. Why in the hell did they not invite me to the meeting?"

I went to the elevator, then to the 4th floor where HR office was. I knocked, waited for nothing, then helped myself in.

The September sun bathed Seattle in golden light as I checked my watch and quickened my pace. I had just enough time to grab coffee before my afternoon meeting with the Richardson Enterprises marketing team. My husband Darius had been unusually busy this week, claiming a series of emergency client meetings that kept him working late. I'd learned to accept his demanding schedule—it was part of being married to one of Seattle's most promising business executives. The downtown streets hummed with midday energy as I approached The Daily Grind, my favorite coffee shop. Its large windows offered a perfect view of the park across the street, where Little Sunshine Daycare had set up what appeared to be a birthday celebration in their outdoor play area. Children's laughter carried through the air, bringing an involuntary smile to my face. I ordered my usual latte and found a seat by the window, absently watching the colorful party. A little girl in a pink princess dress stood at the center of attention, her dark curls bouncing as she jumped with excitement. Something about her seemed oddly familiar, though I couldn't place why.
