Chapter 1

It all began with a commission from the Lancasters, New York City’s wealthiest family.

Their precious son, Griffin, had fallen head over heels for a scholarship student, and his obsession was tanking the family business.

So, they offered me five million dollars in a trust fund to "save" him.

Mrs. Lancaster said, "That girl is stringing Griffin along, using his name to lord it over everyone on campus. Since my son is so captivated by some little actress, we'll simply hire a better, more ruthless one."

The irony wasn't lost on me.

But facing a payout of that magnitude, I couldn't refuse. I took the job.

Then I opened the folder and smiled.

The "little vixen" in question? My own sister, Sloan—a girl I had already brought to her knees once before.

I transferred to Northwood University and quietly planted the story that I was the daughter of a close Lancaster family friend.

On my first day, a scalding latte was dumped on my head in the campus cafe. The hot liquid stung my skin as coffee soaked through my white blouse. Every head in the place turned.

Sloan sauntered over, her wide, innocent eyes fixed on me. "Oh my god, are you okay? My friends are just so protective of me. They can be a little much sometimes. Please don't hold it against them."

A guy beside her sneered, "Sloan, you're too kind. She's obviously gunning for Griffin, and you're still defending her."

Several fraternity members closed in around me, blocking my path.

Brad Carter snorted. "We're the ones who tossed the coffee. This has nothing to do with Sloan. If you're going to play the homewrecker, you'd better be ready for some payback."

Anyone else would have screamed and fled. I just let out a soft sigh.

Seriously, Sloan? The same tired campus bully routine? How quaint. Let me show you how a professional gets it done.

I took off my coffee-splattered sunglasses. With a hand I made sure trembled slightly, I pushed the damp hair from my face.

The room fell silent, the only sound a few sharp intakes of breath.

The color drained from Sloan's face.

My eyes welled up, my bottom lip quivering. "I-I'm not trying to cause trouble," I stammered, my voice trembling. "It was Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster who arranged this… I didn't have a choice. Sloan, please don't worry. I'm not here to take him from you. Even if I tried, how could I possibly compete with you?"

I looked up at the frozen circle of boys, my voice low and hoarse. "I just wanted to start over, maybe make a few friends… but now it feels like the whole world hates me. What did I do wrong?"

Dead silence.

Brad, who had been so aggressive just a moment ago, flushed a deep crimson. "I… I'm so sorry. I'm Brad Carter. I, uh, I'd be honored to be your friend."

Even Sloan's followers began to backpedal. "Don't cry, we didn't mean it like that…"

Sloan hadn't anticipated this. She could only watch, stunned, as I flipped the script, winning over her own cronies with a few well-placed sentences.

Her face twisted in a snarl, and then she finally broke. "Avery Shaw—why is it always you?! Why are you back in my life?!"

Like a startled fawn, I flinched and ducked behind Brad.

"Did I… do something wrong? Does Sloan not like me?"

Brad shot her a protective glare, shielding me. "Sloan, this has nothing to do with her. Calm down."

And that was it. Sloan completely snapped. She lunged and shoved me hard.

As I stumbled back, I caught a glimpse of a figure moving quickly in my direction.

The fish had taken the bait.
