Highway heat: My stepbrother's cravings Chapter 1

I stood in the driveway with my arms crossed so tightly over my chest that I could feel my own heartbeat thumping against my forearms, staring at the black Tahoe like it had personally betrayed me. The mountain of boxes and suitcases crammed into every available space made my stomach twist with dread. "You've got to be kidding me," I said, my voice rising with genuine agitation as I turned to Dad. "You seriously expect Jason and me to share that tiny back seat for the next two days straight? He's enormous, Dad. His legs alone take up half the car."

Mom shifted my three-year-old half-sister to her other hip and gave me that familiar look that could stop a freight train. "Lolita, watch your language please. I know it's not perfect, sweetheart, but the trailer is already full to bursting with the rest of our things, and we couldn't risk damaging the fragile boxes. The middle row had to go. We'll make it work somehow."

"Not perfect?" I let out a sharp laugh that sounded more like a scoff. "That's the biggest understatement I've heard all year. Jason is built like a linebacker. I'm going to be folded up like a pretzel back there while he's spreading out like he owns the place." My gaze drifted unwillingly to where Jason leaned casually against the SUV, his tall frame relaxed in a way that only made my irritation flare hotter. He wore that faded gray University of Arizona T-shirt that hugged his broad shoulders and those soft gray sweatpants that clung to his powerful thighs in a way that should have been illegal. I quickly looked away, refusing to let my mind wander any further.

Jason's deep voice cut through the morning air, carrying that familiar mix of amusement and challenge. "You act like I'm going to eat you alive, Lolita. It's just a car ride. We've survived worse together." He pushed off the vehicle and stretched his arms overhead, the movement pulling his shirt up just enough to reveal a strip of toned skin above his waistband. My eyes caught it for a second before I forced them back to his face.

"Survived?" I shot back, planting my hands on my hips. "We've been at each other's throats for four years, Jason. Ever since our parents decided to mash our families together. This is going to be torture, pure and simple."

Dad sighed heavily as he wedged one last box into place, creating a makeshift cardboard wall in the back. "Kids, please. We're all tired, and the twins are already cranky. Let's just get on the road. You two can figure out the seating once we're moving. It won't be that bad."

I muttered under my breath but climbed in after Jason anyway, because arguing more wasn't going to change anything. The back seat felt impossibly cramped the moment his large body settled in. His thigh pressed firmly against mine, solid and radiating warmth through my thin black leggings. I tried to scoot as far away as possible, but the boxes on my right pinned me in, leaving me with barely enough room to sit properly. One of my ass cheeks hung off the edge, forcing me to lean slightly into him whether I wanted to or not.

"Comfortable yet?" Jason asked after a few minutes, his voice low enough that it didn't carry to the front seat. There was a hint of teasing in it, but something else too—something warmer that made the hairs on my arms stand up.

"Does it look like I'm comfortable?" I whispered fiercely, shifting again and accidentally brushing my leg against his. The contact sent a small spark racing up my spine. "Your knee is digging into me, and I can barely move. This is ridiculous."

He chuckled softly, the sound rumbling through his chest like distant thunder. "Maybe if you'd stop fighting the space and just relax a little, it wouldn't be so bad. Here, try this." Before I could protest, his big hand settled on my hip, guiding me with surprising gentleness until I was half-sitting on his lap, my back against his chest. The position was intimate in a way that made my breath catch. I could feel the steady rise and fall of his breathing, the solid wall of muscle behind me, and the faint scent of his cologne mixed with something uniquely him.

"Jason," I hissed, trying to wiggle free even as his arm came around my waist to steady me. "What do you think you're doing? Dad's right there."

"Making sure we both fit," he murmured close to my ear, his breath warm against my skin. "You were about to lose circulation in your leg anyway. Just sit still for a minute and see if it's better."

I wanted to argue, to push away and reclaim some personal space, but the truth was that the new position did relieve some of the pressure. His body was like a heated seat beneath me, firm yet somehow yielding in the right places. The car started moving, and the gentle vibration of the engine traveled through both of us. For a while, we rode in silence broken only by Dad's off-key singing up front and the occasional babble from the twins in Mom's car behind us.

After about twenty minutes, my right side started going numb again. I shifted, trying to find a better angle, and felt Jason tense beneath me. "Stop squirming like that," he said quietly, his hand tightening slightly on my hip. "You're driving me crazy."

"I'm driving you crazy?" I turned my head to glare at him over my shoulder. Our faces were closer than I'd realized, close enough that I could see the flecks of gold in his dark eyes. "You're the one who takes up all the oxygen in here. How am I supposed to sit for hours like this without moving?"

His gaze dropped to my lips for just a second before returning to my eyes. "Maybe you don't have to sit so rigidly. Lean back against me properly. I won't bite, Lolita. Promise."

The way he said my name sent a flutter through my stomach. We'd spent years trading barbs and avoiding real conversations, but something about being forced this close was peeling back layers I wasn't ready to examine. I hesitated, then slowly relaxed back into his chest. His arm settled more comfortably around me, not restraining but supporting. "This doesn't mean I like you or anything," I muttered, trying to maintain some dignity.

Jason's laugh was soft and genuine this time. "Wouldn't dream of it. You've made your hatred pretty clear over the years. Calling me an arrogant asshole in front of your friends, avoiding family dinners when I was home... ring any bells?"

I felt my cheeks warm. "You started it. You were so angry when you moved in, acting like I ruined your life by existing. Remember when you called me a spoiled princess the first week?"

He was quiet for a moment, his fingers tracing idle patterns on my side where my shirt had ridden up. The touch was light, almost absentminded, but it sent little ripples of sensation across my skin. "I was pissed about leaving my friends and my old school. Taking it out on you wasn't fair. But you gave as good as you got, princess."

"Don't call me that," I said, but there was less heat in my voice than usual. The steady rhythm of the road and the warmth of his body were making me drowsy despite my racing thoughts. His hand felt nice—too nice—resting on my thigh now, the weight of it comforting in the confined space.

We talked in low voices for the next hour, the conversation flowing easier than it ever had before. He asked about my music, the songs I'd been uploading to YouTube, and I found myself telling him about the new track I'd been working on. In return, he shared stories from his lacrosse games that made me laugh despite myself. The chemistry that had always simmered beneath our fights started to feel different now—less like conflict and more like a magnetic pull.

As the sun climbed higher and the miles stretched out, Jason's voice dropped even lower. "You know, sitting like this isn't the worst thing in the world. You smell like coconut and vanilla. It's kind of nice."

My heart skipped. "Jason..." I started, unsure what I even wanted to say.

He shifted slightly beneath me, and I became acutely aware of the growing hardness pressing against my backside. The realization sent a rush of heat through me, equal parts shock and forbidden curiosity. "Tell me something," he whispered, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. "Have you ever wondered what it would be like if we stopped pretending?"

I swallowed hard, my pulse thundering in my ears as the car continued down the highway. The question hung between us, heavy with possibilities I wasn't sure I was ready to face.
