Chapter 6
Emma
"Emma? What are you doing here?" A voice asked me.
I looked up immediately to see Jasper Parrish right in front of me with a shocked face as he looked at me.
"Are you the owner of the Weiss corporation?" Kaylie Abbott, the woman who destroyed my marriage, asked with a completely surprised expression.
Not even in a thousand years would I have imagined a moment like that. I mean, it had really taken me by surprise. I saw them both standing there in front of me, looking at me with very upset expressions, as if they didn't believe it either.
They were still together until today, then. After the divorce five years ago, I avoided, with all my strength, trying to find out about Jasper, his family or his company. I wanted more for him and his to fuck off, I just wanted to be able to forget those three years of my life that I spent married to him, which had been the three most wasted years of my entire life.
When I returned home, my grandma welcomed me with open arms and forgave me when I cried and asked for forgiveness at her feet. So I went back to the place I never should have left, and I was here until today, trying to take it one day at a time, making the best of my days, and enjoying raising my child, which was one of the few things I could do that gave me joy.
I didn't want to know more about Jasper or those days I spent with him, but now the man I once loved with all my strength and the woman who brutally took him from me were here in front of me, looking at me in amazement.
"This must just be a mess." Abbot was babbling, totally irritated by the turn of events that had just happened in our lives. I mean, as far as they knew about me, I was just a stupid, stupid girl who was once Jasper's wife and who silently accepted all the abuse from him and his family. They would never imagine that I was actually so rich and powerful that they could barely understand, but my name on the plaque placed at my table declared me the owner of all that and more.
"Explain this story to me, Emma. What are you doing here at Weiss Corporation?" Jasper demanded to know why that bossy, authoritarian look of his was still showing.
I crossed my hands in front of me on top of my desk. "Good afternoon to you too, my dears," I said to them, letting a teasing smile play on my lips. "Why do you look so shocked, Jasper? You always knew my name was Emma Weiss," I said as if I were still stupid, but the mockery was strong in my words.
My heart was racing, but I kept reminding myself all the time that I wasn't at his house anymore, I wasn't with him anymore. I forced myself to remember that here I was safe and sound and that nothing and no one would hurt me.
He grunted at my words. "There are thousands of Emma Weiss around the world," he sneered, still with that superior look.
"It might even be true, Jasper. But there is only one Emma Weiss, heiress to a billion-dollar fortune," I said with an air of triumph, boasting to them.
Jasper's eyes widened slightly, and Kaylie took a few steps back, as if she had been pushed under the weight of the truth of my words.
"That can't be true..." she stammered, shocked.
"So if you're so rich, why didn't you tell me before? Why did you hide this from me?" Jasper questioned me, looking betrayed by me.
I shrugged. "What if I told you about my true identity, would anything be different in our marriage?" I asked, pressing exactly on the wound of the problem. "Would you have treated me well, Jasper? Would you have valued me? Would you have loved me if I told you my origins? If I told you that I was a billionaire, born and raised with a silver spoon and that an inheritance awaited me, wouldn't you have betrayed me and chased me out of your life anyway?"
No. I was not pious in my words. I could also just call security and throw these two out of my way, but I wanted to look them in the eye and throw those words right in their faces while the advantage was in my hands. Likewise, I hated them, and the hatred just went up and up. It was nice to see their faces, and it was nice to see Jasper completely unarmed.
"What are you talking about, Emma?" He said. "Our marriage is over, but it wasn't as bad as you make it seem." He looked at Kaylie and then turned his gaze to me. "All I remember was us loving each other until the last day," he claimed.
What a pain! I wanted to laugh in his face. He had changed his mind so quickly. Was it because I was now on top, and he was on the bottom?
"Anyway," I said, getting up from my chair and walking calmly across my office room, my high heels clicking comfortably on the wooden parquet floor as I moved elegantly. "Let's leave personal friction aside, we have no reason to carry the past with us until today."
"I agree, that was very well put," he said, agreeing with me.
"I see that you have come to Weiss Corporation looking for investment for your company. I must therefore conclude that you are bankrupt to get to this point," I concluded.
That made me want to laugh so much. Jasper Parrish had gone bankrupt, he was the one who humiliated me and said that I didn't have the qualities to maintain a company, and here I was managing one of the biggest companies in the entire country. What a turnaround, my friends.
"It's just a complicated phase, and we'll get through it very well," Kaylie Abbott replied, slowly recovering from the blow.
"Hmm, maybe you should start selling your jewelry and possessions to pay off your debts. What do you think about this?" I suggested sarcastically.
"We have already done this. But it's not enough," Jasper replied, looking dismayed.
"Jasper!" His wife scolded him harshly. "Don't reveal everything to her."
But he ignored her. "We have nothing left to hide. We are really on the ropes," he confessed.
I couldn't hold back and laughed heartily. "Apparently you should really start selling your clothes, even your underwear if necessary," I said sarcastically.
Kaylie Abbott held her husband's hand. "This is a waste of time. Let's get out of here, don't give a damn if she's going to help us," she said, already pulling Jasper towards the exit.
"Unless..." I raised my voice, continuing to speak. They stopped to look at me. "Unless you two come to the Weiss Corporation for a period of time, only then can I see if you are qualified to receive our investment," I told them.
Jasper blinked, confused. "Do you want us to come work for you as interns here?" he asked.
"Exactly," I replied with a cynical smile. "It's all or nothing. So, do you accept?"
