Chapter 3

Three days after signing the separation papers, I pushed open the front door of my former home. The stench of sour milk and stale beer hit me instantly.

Cardboard delivery boxes formed a jagged barricade in the foyer, their shipping labels still intact. In the kitchen, a tower of crusted, moldy dishes leaned precariously over the stainless-steel sink. Ethan’s expensive charcoal suit lay crumpled on the living room sofa. A massive, jagged purple stain bloomed across the silk lapel. Chloe clearly could not hold her red wine.

Ethan sat in the leather armchair, rubbing his temples. Dark circles bruised the skin under his eyes. He wore the same wrinkled dress shirt from yesterday.

"Are you finally done throwing this tantrum?" Ethan asked. He stood up, towering over the coffee table. "You made your point, Mara. Now clean this place up."

I ignored the command. I stepped over a discarded plastic toy truck to reach the center of the room.

"You completely ruined the trip," he continued, his tone rising. "Toby caught a fever our second day in Orlando. I had to spend forty-eight hours managing a sick kid while trying to save face in front of my junior analyst. Do you have any idea how embarrassing it was to explain your childish disappearing act to Chloe?"

"I imagine it was difficult to explain why your unpaid nanny quit without notice," I said, keeping my face perfectly neutral.

Ethan scoffed, crossing his arms. "If you apologize right now and get the kitchen sorted, we can move past this. I am willing to forgive this little runaway stunt. But you need to fix my suit first. I have a board meeting on Monday."

I pulled a thick manila envelope from my leather tote. I dropped it onto the glass table. It landed with a heavy thud.

"Open it," I said.

He frowned, picking up the envelope. He ripped the flap and pulled out the stapled packet. "What is this? More of your dramatic lists?"

"Notice of Legal Separation and Asset Freeze," I replied. "As of nine o'clock this morning, our joint accounts are locked. The bank will no longer process your golf club memberships or your luxury car lease from that fund."

Ethan’s eyes scanned the first page. His jaw tightened. "You cannot do this. That account pays the mortgage on this house."

"You are solely responsible for the mortgage now," I said. "Read page three."

He flipped the paper aggressively, tearing the top corner. The color began to drain from his face. "Are you out of your mind? My startup's capital is tied up in the new software launch. I do not have the liquid cash to cover a five-thousand-dollar mortgage every month."

"You should have thought about your liquid cash before you bought matching Disney apparel for your mistress," I noted. "Turn to page four."

Ethan glared at me but flipped the page.

"I have officially revoked the free licensing agreement for all brand design assets I created for your company," I said, stepping back to create distance between us. "Your logo, your website interface, your marketing templates. You no longer have the legal right to use them. My lawyer will be sending your board a cease-and-desist letter by noon today."

Ethan dropped the packet. The pages scattered across the expensive Persian rug. He stared at me, his mouth slightly open, utterly shocked. The obedient wife who laid out his color-coordinated ties every Sunday night had just dismantled his financial safety net in seventy-two hours.

"You are trying to destroy my company," he whispered, his voice trembling with a new, unfamiliar fear. "You designed those assets for us. For our family."

"I designed them for a husband who respected me," I corrected him. "That man does not exist. So the free ride is over."

Rapid footsteps slapped against the hardwood floor. Toby ran into the living room, wearing mismatched pajamas.

"Mommy!" Toby whined, rubbing his eyes. He rushed toward me, lifting his little arms, expecting me to scoop him up and smooth his messy hair.

I crouched down. I looked at his flushed cheeks. Then, I placed my hands on his shoulders and gently, firmly, pushed his arms down.

Toby blinked. Confusion washed over his tiny features.

"Auntie Chloe's blueberry pie was gross," Toby complained, his lower lip trembling. "It tasted like dirt. And she does not know the voices for my bedtime stories. She just reads them boring. I hate her."

He yanked on the hem of my blouse. "Go to the kitchen. Make me French toast right now."

I kept my hands securely on his shoulders, holding him in place.

"I cannot do that, Toby," I said, my voice steady. "You chose Vacation Mom at the airport. You wanted Auntie Chloe to take my place. When you make a choice, you have to live with how it turns out."

Toby sniffled, tears pooling in his eyes. "But I want you to make my food! You always make my food!"

"I am no longer responsible for your meals," I said, looking directly into his eyes so he would understand the absolute boundary. "I am no longer responsible for your stories. You need to ask your father for those things from now on."

I stood up, releasing him. Toby burst into loud, wailing sobs. He turned and buried his face in Ethan’s leg. Ethan did not reach down to comfort him. He just kept staring at me, his expression twisting into pure hostility.

"You are punishing a five-year-old because you are jealous?" Ethan demanded.

"I am teaching a five-year-old that actions have consequences," I said. "Something his father never learned."

I walked over to the hallway closet and gripped the handle of my final suitcase. I popped the handle up. The wheels rolled smoothly against the floorboards.

"You will not last a month!" Ethan shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings as I moved toward the front door. Panic laced his anger now. "You have no income, Mara! You think you can just walk away from the Vance family money? You cannot survive in Toronto on your own. You will be crawling back here, begging for your old life in two weeks!"

I stopped with my hand hovering over the brass doorknob. I turned my head, looking back at the man I had spent seven years serving.

"You never supported me, Ethan," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the stale air of the foyer. "I spent seven years feeding your ego with my work, my time, and my life."

I twisted the knob, pulled the heavy oak door open, and stepped out into the crisp morning air. I pulled the door shut behind me. The loud slam echoed like a gunshot, severing my ties to the empty shell of a house forever.

Four hours later, I stood at the departure gate of the international terminal.

The flight attendant scanned my phone, handing me a printed lounge pass alongside my passport.

I took the thick cardstock, turned my back on the terminal, and walked down the jet bridge toward Toronto.
