Chapter 2

The storm raged over the empty boulevard outside the estate gates, but the roar of the wind was suddenly drowned out by the thundering beat of heavy rotor blades.

Three twin-engine medical transport helicopters tore through the low clouds, searchlights cutting through the driving rain. Their hulls bore the silver crest of the world's most elite private emergency network.

They touched down in flawless formation across the wide avenue, flattening the surrounding shrubs with intense downwash.

Before the landing skids had fully settled on the asphalt, the pressurized cabin doors slid open. A dozen top-tier emergency specialists in sterile gear rushed out into the rain, led by the chief of critical care.

"Commander Charlotte!" The lead physician sprinted forward, immediately deploying a portable pediatric isolation unit. "We have the mobile intensive care pod ready. Hand her to us!"

I placed Mia into the climate-controlled capsule. Within seconds, monitors began humming, sensors attached to her small chest, and the team started IV fluids and controlled cooling measures while monitoring her temperature.

"Her pulse is stabilizing, Commander," the doctor reported as they lifted the unit into the main aircraft. "We are heading straight to the North American Royal Care Pavilion. The private pediatric critical-care and recovery wing is fully locked down for her arrival."

An hour later, inside the penthouse suite of the Royal Care Pavilion, the chaotic nightmare finally stopped.

Mia lay in a state-of-the-art pediatric recovery bed, her breathing deep, steady, and quiet. The red flush had begun to fade from her cheeks. The digital vitals monitor above her bed showed her temperature trending safely downward.

"The fever is responding to treatment, ma'am," the head pediatrician said quietly, bowing his head. "There are no signs of neurological complications. She is resting peacefully."

I stroked Mia's forehead, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. "Stay by her side. If her temperature rises even half a degree, alert me immediately."

"Understood, Commander."

As I stepped into the private lounge outside the suite, my phone buzzed violently against the glass coffee table.

Marcus's name flashed across the screen.

I swiped to answer and held the phone to my ear without saying a word.

"Charlotte? Where the hell are you?" Marcus's voice barked through the receiver, thick with annoyance. "Are you still throwing a tantrum in the rain? Noah's fever broke half an hour ago, and you're out there playing games to get attention."

In the background, I heard the clinking of porcelain and Evelyn's shrill, boastful voice speaking to someone nearby.

"Marcus, make sure you take a photo of Noah eating the saffron chicken broth," Evelyn called out. "Post it in the family group chat! Let all your uncles see how fast our little heir recovered. A true Kane boy is worth his weight in gold!"

Marcus turned his attention back to the phone, his tone sharp and dismissive. "Did you hear that? Noah is resting comfortably. If you dragged Mia off to some cheap clinic just to make me feel guilty, you can stop right now. Bring her back home, wash her up, and come to the hospital. Noah wants his favorite story read to him."

"You left your daughter convulsing on the pavement," I said, my voice dead and quiet.

"Oh, stop being dramatic!" Marcus scoffed. "She had a mild temperature. You always exaggerate everything. Look at Noah—he's sitting up in bed laughing. A girl can handle a little chill. Stop acting like a victim and get over here."

He hung up without waiting for a reply.

I lowered the phone, staring at the darkened screen. A cold, steady detachment settled over my chest, sharper than any anger I had ever felt.

"Watch my daughter," I instructed the security detail standing outside Mia's door. "Nobody enters this floor without my direct authorization."

"Yes, Commander."

I pulled on a dry overcoat, stepped into the private elevator, and headed downstairs.

Twenty minutes later, I walked through the sliding glass doors of Sacred Heart Private Hospital.

The VIP pediatric floor was dead quiet, save for the muffled sounds of laughter coming from Room 801 at the end of the hallway.

I pushed the heavy oak door open.

The room looked more like a five-star hotel suite than a hospital. Noah was propped up on plush silk pillows, playing a handheld video game while sipping saffron chicken broth from a bone china bowl.

Evelyn sat on the leather couch, happily tapping away on her phone, scrolling through dozens of congratulatory messages in the Kane family group chat. Marcus stood near the window, sipping a freshly brewed espresso.

When the door clicked shut behind me, Evelyn looked up. Her eyes narrowed into slits the moment she saw my face.

She kicked a heavy duffel bag resting near the foot of the couch. The bag slid across the polished tiles, slamming hard against my shins.

Noah's muddy soccer jerseys, socks, and tournament gear spilled out across my boots.

"Look what dragged itself in," Evelyn snapped, waving her manicured hand with disgust. "You took your sweet time, didn't you? Take those clothes down to the hospital laundry service right now. Noah's gear got dirty during the storm, and I want it washed and pressed before morning."

I didn't move. I looked at the pile of dirty clothes, then up at Evelyn's smug, arrogant face.

"Are you deaf?" Evelyn raised her voice, glaring at me. "After you drop off the laundry, take a cab back to the estate. Simmer a pot of chicken and herb soup for Noah. The hospital food is too bland for my grandson. He needs real nourishment after the scare he had tonight."

"And where is Mia?" Marcus asked, stepping away from the window. He looked at me with cold disapproval. "Did you leave her home alone? You couldn't even bring her along to apologize to your mother-in-law for screaming in the driveway?"

I stood entirely still in the center of the room. "Mia almost died tonight."

Marcus let out an exasperated sigh, rubbing the bridge of his nose as if dealing with an unruly child. "Here we go again. She had a common fever, Charlotte. You're completely unhinged. You have no sense of maternal duty, no respect for this family, and no gratitude for everything I provide for you."

He walked up to me, stopping only inches away, looking down with pure arrogance.

"You should be on your knees thanking my mother for keeping this family together," Marcus said coldly, pointing a finger toward my face. "Instead, you run off like a street dog, looking for pity. If you can't fulfill your basic duties as a wife and a mother, maybe you don't belong in my house at all."

The room fell dead silent.

I looked into his eyes—the eyes of the man I had protected, supported, and loved in secret for six years while hiding my true power.

Without a word, I drew back my right arm and struck.

*SMACK!*

The slap echoed through the room like a gunshot.

The sheer force of the blow snapped Marcus's head hard to the left. His body lurched sideways, crashing against the metal IV pole and sending it clattering to the floor.

Marcus stumbled back against the windowsill, his hand flying to his face.

Bright red blood welled from his split lower lip, dripping down his chin and staining his crisp white collar.

Evelyn shrieked, springing up from the couch in horror. "Marcus! Oh my god! You insane bitch! How dare you lay a hand on my son?!"

Marcus stared at me, his eyes wide with utter shock and disbelief. He touched his bleeding mouth, his chest heaving with rage. "You... you hit me? Are you out of your mind?!"

I looked down at him, my expression freezing into stone.

"Marcus Kane," I said, every word dropping like a blade of ice. "Prepare to sign the divorce papers."
