Chapter 3

“Ma’am, it will be in your best interest to remain calm”

“Remain calm? I have bruises everywhere”

They stood and walk to the corner of the room to discuss before the other sat down continuing the interrogation.

“Where is your husband?” He asked

“Husband? I don’t have one, we’re getting a divorce”

“Divorce? Why if I may ask”

“Are you here to talk about my divorce or you’re going to tell me why you barged into my hours early in the morning and whisked me away.

“We got an intel that you’re in bed with terrorist”

“Terrorist?” What the hell was this man talking about?

“Yes, the wire transfer from your account last night was to an account we’ve been monitoring. We also have intel that you sleep with their leader, I guess that is why you’re getting a divorce. Am I wrong?”

“Why I’m getting a divorce has nothing to do with you and where are all this allegations coming from, i don't know what you’re talking about”

“ I see…so you cheat and when you’re caught, you go ahead to ask for divorce. Why are you funding their movement? How did you get involved with them.

“Cheat? I was the one getting cheated on!” I yelled frustrated as tears threaten to escape my eye bank.

“We have evidence, miss Madeline. You in the arms of their leader going up some hotel”

“What are you talking about? I would never do that”

“Since you’re hell bent on not talking, we have no choice but to take you to court”

Knock! Knock!

A sound came from the door as we turned towards the door, my lawyer walking in.

They walked out the building leaving just I and him. He closes the door quietly and takes the seat across from me, his suit is perfect as always.

“Tell me what’s going on.” He says softly

My throat feels tight, “they’re saying I’m involved una terrorist conspiracy.

His brows knit together, but his voice stays calm. “ what are you saying?”

“That it’s not true.” The words come out sharp, desperate. “I didn’t do anything, I don’t even understand how this happened.”

He leans forward slightly. “I need more than that, What exactly have they told you? What are the charges?”

I shake my head, staring down at my cuffed hands. “They keep throwing terms at me like I should know what they mean. Conspiracy. Financing. Association with known suspects.” My voice cracks.

He exhales slowly, like he’s trying to keep me grounded. “Listen to me carefully. Right now, it doesn’t matter how outrageous the accusations are. What matters is how they’re building their case. Did they show you any evidence?”

“No,” I say quickly, too quickly. “Just questions. They mentioned something about images and sleeping with the enemy”

His eyes narrow slightly, “So, they’re fishing, that's good to know.” He taps his fingers once on the table, thinking. “Did you answer them?”

“I didn’t know what to say. I thought… if I cooperated, they’d see they were wrong.”

His mouth presses into a thin line. “Next time, you don’t say anything without me there. Understood?”

I nod “Understood.”

My eyes sting but I blink the tears back. “There’s nothing to tell,” I whisper. “I’m innocent. I swear to you, I’m innocent.”

He studies me for a long moment then nods once. “Then that’s where we start but you need to be strong, this won’t be easy.”

The next day I was taken to court and told to stay at the stand.

“All rise!” The court announced and we all did.

“The court can now proceed” the judge annoyed and the trial began.

Evidence of her creating fake accounts, her forged signature on documents were being displayed.

“These are not real! someone is trying to frame me” tge judge ignored me.

“There’s also a witness, it’s her husband. The persecutor and I felt the world tilting. In he walked , avoiding my eyes. This bastard! I seethed, he was trying to destroy me so he could take everything from under me.

“Hi dear, I’m really sorry but I have to do this. It’s for your own good, those guys need to be brought down, they could hurt you someday. I know the last few months have been rough but I want to do better by you….for Dad”

“Don't you dare mention his name!!” i roared, what made him think he had such right. Here he was playing the devoted husband while his mission here is to ruin me and he had the effrontery to talk about my Dad? I’ll be damned.

“Mr Liam, kindly approach the stand and give your testimony “ the Judge called and I watched him swear the oat, my skin crawling. How was I ever in love with this man?

“Good day everyone, my name is Liam the husband to the accused. Few months ago, I started to notice some changes in my wife, she would come back late. The secret calls began, she was always agitated like she had to look over her back for something or someone so I hired a secret investigator to follow her just to know if she was been blackmailed and intimidated. For someone like her that comes from a wealthy home it, wouldn't be a surprise. To my greatest surprise and shock of my life, what I found out shattered me. This pictures was taken” he held out pictures showing them to the court, pictures of me and a man.

“This is not me, Liam why would you do this to me?” I cried out but he ignored me and continued.

“I began to to dig deep, who was this man and how did they meet. That was how I found out he was the leader of a terrorist group and Madeline had been funding them while sleeping with their boss, they had just closed a deal so they went to the hotel together to celebrate. I tried confronting her about it all but she asked for a divorce saying I had no right to question her.”
