Chapter 5

I spread the fifty-page document across the scuffed linoleum floor of the studio. The paper felt heavy, carrying the weight of a billion-dollar valuation.

"You're reading it again?" Leo’s voice sounded tinny through the phone speaker resting by my knee.

"I'm at page twelve," I said, tracing the edge of the thick parchment. "Clause seven."

"Read it out loud. Make sure your eyes aren't playing tricks on you."

I leaned over the pages, tracking the dense legal text with my index finger. "Vertex Capital recognizes Nora Shen as the primary co-creator of the platform's core architecture code. Furthermore, Vertex assumes full financial responsibility for all legal fees related to patent litigation."

A low whistle came through the speaker. "Raymond Chen isn't just giving you a job, Nora. He’s funding a war."

"He’s protecting his investment," I corrected. "Ethan’s code is a house of cards. Raymond knows I'm the only one who can keep it standing."

"Are you going to sign it?"

I picked up the black pen resting on the floorboards. "Hold on."

I stared at the dotted line. Three seconds ticked by in the quiet room. The city traffic hummed outside the single window, a distant rumble that faded into the background.

"Nora?" Leo asked, his tone shifting. "You hesitating?"

"No."

I wasn't thinking about destroying Ethan. I wasn't picturing the look on Chloe's face when the IPO stalled.

"Do you remember the winter Felix was a year old?" I asked, keeping my eyes fixed on the blank line waiting for my name.

"Barely. Why?"

"I used to sit up at two in the morning. I’d bounce him on my knee until he stopped crying, and then I’d pull the laptop onto the bed. I wrote the entire data-sorting algorithm in the dark so the screen wouldn't wake Ethan."

"You worked yourself to the bone for him."

"I thought it was love," I said. My voice stayed flat, completely devoid of the tears I used to shed over those memories. "I really believed that’s what marriage was. Sacrifice. Building something together."

"And now?"

"Now I know the legal term for it." I pressed the pen tip to the paper. "Unpaid labor."

I wrote my name. *Nora Shen*.

No grand epiphany hit me. No sudden rush of victory washed over my skin. Instead, a rusted bolt deep inside my chest simply popped loose. Just one. But it gave my lungs room to expand. I took a full breath for the first time since leaving Ethan's office.

"It's done," I told Leo.

"Good. Now get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be hell."

The morning sun did nothing to warm the damp air of the city. I stood on the sidewalk outside the elementary school, adjusting the straps on Felix’s backpack. Beside him, his younger sister, Mia, kicked at a crack in the pavement.

"Mom," Felix said, looking up. His dark eyes were too perceptive for a nine-year-old. "Are we going back to Dad's house today?"

"No," I answered, smoothing down his collar. "We're staying at the studio."

Mia wrinkled her nose. "It smells like old soup there."

"I’ll buy some room spray," I promised. "Grapefruit or vanilla. You pick."

"Vanilla," she decided instantly.

Felix shifted his weight. "Dad's assistant called my phone this morning."

My hands stopped moving. "Chloe?"

"Yeah. She asked if you were still mad about the party."

A cold spike of anger hit my stomach, but I kept my expression neutral. "What did you tell her?"

"I hung up," Felix said, shrugging. "She talks too loud."

A small, genuine smile broke through my tension. "Go inside, both of you. Don't be late."

I watched them run through the double doors, their small figures swallowed by the crowd of students. Once they were out of sight, I turned and walked toward the subway.

Back at the studio, I pulled the battered ThinkPad from my bag. I pried the plastic casing open with a thumbnail and carefully removed the backup hard drive. It was no bigger than a deck of cards, but it held every original commit, every timestamp, every piece of legacy code Ethan claimed I never wrote.

I slid the drive into a thick, padded manila envelope.

I dialed a new number on my burner phone. A receptionist answered, then immediately transferred me.

"Arthur Lin," a crisp voice announced.

"Mr. Lin, it’s Nora Shen. The package is ready."

"You have the physical drive?" the patent attorney asked.

"Yes. I’m sealing it now."

"Send it via bonded courier. Once I have it in my possession, I will file the injunction with the patent office."

I wrote his firm's address on the front of the envelope in thick black marker. "How long after you file until Ethan finds out?"

"The system updates overnight," Lin explained. "His legal team has automated alerts set up for any filings related to the company's intellectual property. They will be notified immediately."

"Will it freeze the IPO?"

"It will force a mandatory disclosure to all shareholders. He cannot legally go public with a contested core patent. The SEC won't allow it."

"Good." I pressed the adhesive flap down, locking the drive inside.

"Are you prepared for the fallout, Ms. Shen? Your husband's lawyers will not take this lightly. They will try to bury you in injunctions."

"They offered me eighteen thousand dollars for my life's work, Mr. Lin. I'm past caring what they take lightly."

I ended the call and grabbed my coat.

The rest of the day blurred into a series of mechanical tasks. Courier drop-off. Grocery shopping. Picking up the kids. Buying the vanilla spray Mia wanted.

By midnight, the studio was quiet. The kids were asleep on the pull-out sofa, their breathing steady and soft in the cramped space.

I sat at the small desk in the dark, staring at the blank wall. The silence felt heavy, charged with the invisible machinery I had set into motion. I didn't feel tired. I felt wide awake, buzzing with a strange, nervous energy.

The screen of my phone lit up, casting a harsh white glare across the wooden desk.

A text message.

I picked up the device. The sender was Ethan.

*The lawyers said you contacted the patent office. Nora, we can talk.*

I stared at the glowing letters. My eyes drifted upward to the timestamp at the top of the screen.

2:17 AM.

The exact time I used to stay awake building his dream.
