Chapter 3

"You're actually staying in that place?" Leo’s voice crackled through the speaker of my burner phone. "Nora, it’s a death trap. The neighborhood hasn't been safe since the nineties."

"It’s a tactical retreat, Leo," I said, wedging the phone between my ear and shoulder as I shoved a pile of old mail off the only chair in the room. "And it’s the only place Ethan’s lawyers won't think to look. He forgot I even kept the lease on this studio."

"He forgot because he’s a prick. Are you okay? You sounded... shaky at the office."

"I’m fine. I’m just tired of being invisible." I set my bag on the scarred wooden desk. "Did you get the packet I sent?"

"The one with the encrypted drive? Yeah. I haven't cracked the outer shell yet. You always were better at encryption than me."

"Keep at it. I need a mirror of the 2021 logs."

I hung up and stared at the room. It was twelve by twelve, smelling of stale rain and the cheap lemon cleaner the landlord used to mask the mold. This was where I lived before Ethan. Before the IPO. Before I became the 'housewife' the media liked to mock.

I pulled the old ThinkPad from my bag. The casing was cracked at the corner, held together by a piece of electrical tape.

"Don't die on me now," I whispered, pressing the power button.

The fan groaned, a mechanical death rattle that lasted thirty seconds before the screen flickered to life. I bypassed the standard OS and booted into the hidden partition I’d built years ago.

"Come on. Where are you?"

My fingers flew over the keys. The muscle memory was still there, sharp and cold. I navigated through the directories until I found the folder labeled *Project Phoenix*. It was the original name of Ethan’s platform.

I found the compressed file. *Auth_Core_Legacy.tar.gz*.

"Got you."

I extracted the files. The screen filled with lines of code, a waterfall of logic that I had built from nothing. I opened the commit history.

"Let’s see who the 'unsung architect' really is," I muttered.

I scrolled through the logs.

*June 12, 2021 - 22:14. Author: Nora_S. Comment: Initial handshake protocol.*

*June 13, 2021 - 03:45. Author: Nora_S. Comment: Encryption layer 2 implementation.*

Every single line of the core authentication module had my digital fingerprint. I wasn't just a helper. I was the creator.

"Ethan, you idiot," I said to the empty room. "You didn't even bother to scrub the metadata."

I kept scrolling, searching for the specific ghost I’d left in the machine. I found it at line 1024.

`if (request.origin == 'master_bypass') { // N.S. reserve }`

It was a conditional branch I’d written late one night. It was a backdoor, a fail-safe I’d told myself we might need if the servers ever locked us out. But deep down, I knew why I’d really put it there. I’d seen the way Ethan looked at the venture capitalists even back then. I knew he was a man who liked to own things—and people.

I took a screenshot, the white flash of the capture reflecting in my eyes. Then another. I moved the files into a draft in my encrypted mail account.

I reached the 47th commit.

The date hit me like a physical blow. July 19, 2021.

"Fix edge case," I read the comment aloud. My voice broke.

I closed my eyes, and suddenly I wasn't in a dusty studio. I was back in the basement apartment. The air was stifling. I was sitting on a pile of cushions because my body felt like it had been shredded from the inside out.

"Ethan?" I had called out, my voice barely a whisper. "The heating pad stopped working."

The door to the small bedroom had been cracked open. I could see him. He was wearing a headset, leaning over a map of user growth.

"I’m on the London call, Nora!" he’d barked, not even turning around. "Can't you just take an aspirin? This round is worth twenty million. I can't leave the desk."

"I’m bleeding again," I said, but the words stayed in my throat. He wouldn't have heard them over the sound of his own ambition.

I had reached for the laptop. It was the only thing that didn't hurt. I had opened the compiler and started working on the edge case for the data scraper. I had coded through the cramps, through the silent tears, through the realization that my husband cared more about a Series A round than the child we had just lost.

"You didn't even come into the room," I whispered to the screen.

I stared at the "Nora_S" signature on that commit. It was more than code. It was a receipt for a debt he could never pay back.

I saved the screenshot of the 47th commit and added it to the draft. My hand was shaking so hard I had to grip the edge of the desk.

"You want to talk about legacy code, Ethan? Let’s talk about it."

I leaned back, the plastic chair groaning under me. I had enough to humiliate him. I had enough to tank the IPO security audit. But it wasn't enough to get the ring back. It wasn't enough to make him feel the hollow space in his chest that I’d been living with for years.

A sharp ping echoed through the room.

I jumped, my heart leaping into my throat. The laptop screen flickered. A new window popped up. It wasn't a system notification.

It was an incoming message in my encrypted inbox.

"Nobody has this address," I said, my pulse racing. "Only Leo."

I clicked the message.

*From: r.chen@vertexcap.com*

*Subject: We know who you are.*

I froze. Vertex Capital was the lead investor in Ethan’s IPO. They were the ones who had just handed him a billion-dollar valuation.

I opened the email. There was no body text. Just an attachment.

I clicked it. It was a photo.

It was a grainy, long-lens shot of me sitting in this very room, taken through the window. I was holding the emerald ring—the real one. The one I’d swapped for a high-quality fake in the safe-deposit box months ago, before Ethan could give the 'original' to Chloe.

I spun around, looking at the dark window. The city lights mocked me.

My phone buzzed in my hand. A text message from the same unknown number.

*The ring is small change, Nora. We want the kill switch. Open the door.*

A heavy thud sounded against the studio door. Not a knock. A demand.

The person on the other side didn't wait for an answer. The handle began to turn.
