He Smeared His Campaign Wife on Live TV

After eighteen years of fixing Julian’s disasters and writing his speeches, I was betrayed. My own husband and son branded me unstable on live television to cover their tracks. Now, Julian’s narrow political victory has triggered a ruinous inquiry. As both men beg me to erase their betrayals, they don’t realize I walked away with a drive full of their dirtiest secrets. The next speech I write won’t save them—it will destroy their legacy forever.

Chapter 5

"Thirty seconds."

The digital countdown on the campaign server monitor flashed red against the dark screen. 00:29. 00:28.

I stood in the cramped printing room, my fingers resting on the cold metal keyboard. The mass email was queued in the outbox, scheduled to hit three hundred local media contacts.

Subject line: Medical Disclosure - Evelyn Hart.

I opened the attached document.

The letterhead belonged to Dr. Aris Thorne, my general practitioner. But the address at the top right read 412 West Oak Bouleavrd. The street type was misspelled. Dr. Thorne had operated out of East Oak Avenue for a decade.

I scrolled to the bottom of the page.

My own signature sat centred above the date. The loop of the 'y' and the sharp cross of the 't' matched exactly. Oliver had copied it from my 2018 dental insurance claim form.

My son had dug through my filing cabinet, cropped my handwriting, and pasted it onto a fake diagnosis.

00:15.

My hand hovered over the delete key. One keystroke would wipe the queue. One keystroke would protect my name.

Instead, I clicked the export tab. I dragged the raw metadata file onto my encrypted flash drive. The transfer bar loaded, pulling the author tags, edit history, and IP addresses.

00:05.

Let them send it. A deleted file is a rumour. A timestamped forgery is evidence.

00:01.

The outbox emptied. The screen flashed Sent.

The heavy wooden door pushed open. Julian stepped into the narrow glow of the overhead fluorescent bulb. He wrestled with his left cuff, his fingers slipping against the gold metal.

"Where did you move my pillbox?" he asked, not looking up. "The blue one. It is not on the bathroom shelf. My blood pressure is through the roof and you hid the medication."

"I didn't hide it," I said, pulling my flash drive from the tower. I dropped it into my handbag. "I just stopped laying it out for you."

"Well, I need it." Julian shoved the gold link through the buttonhole, but it twisted sideways. He cursed under his breath. "And the navy tie. Does it go with the Oxford white or the eggshell? Chloe said eggshell, but she doesn't know how the studio lights wash me out."

He stepped closer, thrusting his wrist toward me. "Fix this. The clasp is stuck."

I looked at his outstretched hand. The same hand that had just authorised a press release declaring me mentally unfit.

I did not move. I did not reach for the gold metal.

"Julian," I said, keeping my voice steady. "Did you read the medical disclosure before it went out?"

He dropped his arm, his jaw tightening. "Chloe handled the drafting. I approved the strategy. We already discussed this."

"You approved a fake diagnosis."

"It is a temporary narrative shield." He yanked the cufflink, snapping it into place with brute force. "Now tell me which shirt to wear. The press van is parked outside."

"Wear whatever you want."

Julian stared at me. His eyes narrowed, scanning my face for the usual compliance. "Are you seriously doing this right now? You are politicizing even the most basic duties of a wife."

"A wife," I repeated.

"Yes, a wife. A partner. The person who is supposed to support me when the entire city is watching." He stepped into my space, his cedarwood cologne filling the cramped room. "I am trying to save this family. I am trying to save the mayor's office. The least you can do is make sure I don't look like a fool on camera."

A thick white smear of shaving cream clung to the left side of his collar, stark against the expensive cotton. Yesterday, I would have grabbed a damp cloth and wiped it away before the cameras saw.

I looked right at the white foam. Then I looked at his eyes.

"You don't need my help to look like a fool," I told him.

"Do you have any idea what is happening out there?" Julian demanded, ignoring the insult. "The waterfront zoning questions are multiplying. The donors are calling my cell every five minutes. I need you to be the anchor you have always been, not another crisis to manage."

"I am not a crisis," I replied. "I am the person you threw under a bus to hide your affair."

"It is not an affair!" he shouted, his voice echoing off the metal filing cabinets. "It is a distraction. Chloe means nothing."

"She meant enough to wear my coat. She meant enough to be in my son's bedroom."

"Do not bring Oliver into this."

"Oliver is already in this." I pointed at the computer monitor. "Your son just forged my signature on a medical document."

Julian waved his hand dismissively. "He is protecting the campaign. He understands the sacrifices required for public service."

"He committed a crime."

"He secured a victory." Julian leaned closer, his shadow falling over me. "Stop being so dramatic, Evelyn. Go upstairs. Find the blue pillbox. Bring me the eggshell shirt. We walk out to the press van in ten minutes, and you smile."

The massive industrial printer in the corner whirred to life, cutting off my reply.

The machine hummed, pulling thick glossy paper from the tray.

"What is that?" Julian demanded, taking a step back.

"A hard copy," I said. "For my records."

The printer spit out the first page. The fake letterhead. The misspelled address.

Julian snatched it off the output tray. His eyes scanned the text. Guilt never crossed his face; only annoyance. "This is a perfectly crafted statement. It gives you a sympathetic angle. Exhaustion. Stress. It happens to plenty of political spouses."

"It says I am unfit to manage my own affairs."

"It says you need rest!" Julian snapped. "Stop acting like a victim. We are handing you a holiday on a silver platter. Nobody is going to verify the clinic address."

"They will when I hand them the original file."

Julian scoffed. "You are bluffing. You would never destroy the Hart name."

The machine pulled another sheet.

"Standard damage control," I said, walking toward the output tray. "Is that what Chloe calls forgery?"

"It is not forgery if we own the narrative."

The second page slid out. I grabbed it before he could.

This was the authorisation form. The internal campaign document approving the release of the medical records.

I scanned the bottom of the page.

My chest turned to ice.

Right below the final paragraph, stamped in thick black ink, was an electronic signature. It wasn't Chloe's name. It wasn't Julian's name.

Authorised by: Oliver Ashcroft, Campaign Manager.

My son hadn't just scanned my signature. He had signed his own name to authorise the lie. He took legal responsibility for destroying my reputation.

"Give me that," Julian ordered, reaching for the paper.

I stepped back, gripping the sheet so tightly the edges crumpled.

Outside the room, heavy footsteps paused in the hallway.

The electronic keypad on the door beeped.

Three sharp, rapid tones.

The metal handle turned.
