Chapter 3

My phone vibrated off the hotel nightstand, hitting the carpet with a dull thud. I didn't bother picking it up. The screen lit up with another dozen alerts.

Laney’s PR machine was working overtime. Gossip blogs flashed my high school yearbook picture next to bold, red text. *Violin Prodigy or High School Bully?* *Brands Sever Ties with Toxic Soloist.* Three of my major sponsorships had suspended our contracts in the last hour.

A sharp knock hammered against my hotel door.

I pulled it open. Ethan stood in the hallway, adjusting his designer watch.

"Are you ready to be reasonable?" he asked, stepping past me into the room.

"Get out."

Ethan ignored me. He walked to the center of the room and crossed his arms. "Your endorsements are dropping you. Your tour is dead. I told you not to make this ugly, Elowen."

"You manufactured a smear campaign." I shut the door, leaning my weight against the wood. "You fed them those old photos."

"Laney is just protecting herself from your jealousy." He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "But I can fix this. I can get your cosmetics deal back. I can smooth things over with the board."

"In exchange for what?"

"A public statement," Ethan said smoothly. "Post an apology. Tell your fans you were under immense pressure and suffered a momentary breakdown. Tell them to stop attacking Laney. Step away gracefully, and I'll make sure you still have a career when you recover."

My stomach turned. He didn't just want me to lose. He wanted me to bow to her.

"You want me to lie," I said.

"I want you to survive." Ethan stepped closer, his voice dropping to a patronizing whisper. "I'm offering you a lifeline, Elowen. The Boston Symphony already replaced you. Chicago is gone. You have no leverage. Submit the statement."

"No."

Ethan’s jaw locked. "Excuse me?"

"I said no." I walked over to the nightstand and scooped up my phone. "I don't want your scraps. I don't want your foundation. And I definitely don't want you in my room. Leave."

"You are destroying your own life!" he yelled, pointing a finger at my chest.

"Watch me," I replied.

I opened the door and stared at him until he finally stormed out, muttering curses under his breath. The latch clicked shut.

I didn't cry. I sat at the small desk, propped my phone against a water glass, and opened my social media app.

I tapped 'Go Live'.

The viewer count skyrocketed. One thousand. Ten thousand. Fifty thousand. The chat scrolled so fast it blurred into a stream of gray text.

"Everyone wants to talk about my career," I spoke directly into the camera. "Let's talk about it."

I held up a printed stack of papers to the lens.

"This is the official contract for the European Music Festival," I said, tapping the date at the top. "And this is the original email inviting me to headline. My husband, Ethan, manages my foundation account. He logged in and swapped my name for Laney Foster's."

The chat paused, then exploded with question marks.

"Laney claims I'm jealous of her talent," I continued, keeping my voice steady. "She told the world I couldn't handle her success. But her entire setlist for this European tour relies on modern adaptations of Maestro Valerius's work."

I held up the legal registration forms, pointing to the thick black ink. "I hold the exclusive copyright to those arrangements. She cannot play a single note without my permission. She didn't earn that stage. She stole it, with the help of the foundation manager."

I set the papers down.

"As for the backstage video," I said. "I record all my practice sessions. My voice memo app was still running in my pocket when I walked into my husband's dressing room."

I grabbed my tablet, pulled up the audio file, and cranked the volume to maximum.

The recording played clear as day.

*Laney’s voice: "Still a sore loser, Elowen? Always walking in at the wrong time."*

*My voice: "Get out of my husband's dressing room."*

The audio captured the scuffle. It captured Laney's fake whimper. And then, the unmistakable, violent crash of Ethan smashing the two-hundred-year-old violin against the concrete floor.

I stopped the recording.

"My husband destroyed my mentor's legacy," I looked straight into the camera. "And he did it to protect his mistress. I am filing for divorce, and I am suing Laney Foster for copyright infringement. Have a great afternoon."

I ended the stream.

Within twenty minutes, the internet flipped. The hashtag demanding Laney's cancellation trended number one globally. Two music institutions publicly announced they were pausing all projects with her.

The vindication tasted like ash, but it worked.

Then, my screen flashed with a new notification.

Laney had posted a response. Not an apology. A video file.

I tapped play.

The footage was ten years old, grainy and shaking, clearly filmed on an old flip phone. It showed me in a crowded high school hallway. My face was red, tear-streaked, and twisted in rage. I screamed at a girl—Laney—shoving her hard into a row of metal lockers. Laney slumped to the floor, covering her face. The video cut to black.

Laney’s caption read: *Elowen has always been a monster. I’ve lived in fear of her since we were teenagers. The abuse never stopped.*

My chest tightened. The context was gone. The truth was stripped away.

My phone rang. Ethan.

I answered it.

"Is it true?" Ethan demanded, his voice thick with disgust.

"You saw a ten-second clip," I said.

"I saw you assault her!" Ethan shouted through the speaker. "Did you bully her all through high school? Have you been lying to me about who you really are this entire time?"

A cold numbness spread through my veins. The man I married didn't just cheat on me. He fundamentally believed the worst version of me.

"You really think I'm the villain," I whispered.

"The proof is right there, Elowen. You need serious psychological help."

I hung up. I blocked his number. I tossed the device onto the bed.

A heavy knock rattled the door.

I didn't ask who it was. I yanked the handle open, ready to scream at Ethan to get out of my sight forever.

The words died in my throat.

It wasn't Ethan.

A tall man stood in the hallway. He wore a dark wool coat, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. Sharp jawline, piercing eyes that missed absolutely nothing.

Felix.

We hadn't spoken since graduation. He had been a phantom in those high school hallways, the guy who sat in the back row and watched everyone else tear each other apart. He still had that same intimidating stillness. His broad shoulders blocked the hallway light.

He didn't say hello. He pulled one hand from his pocket and held up his phone. The screen displayed Laney's grainy video on a loop.

"This is edited," Felix said, his voice a low, rough gravel.

I stared at him, my fingers gripping the edge of the door.

He met my gaze, holding the phone steady. "I have the original."
