Chapter 1

Three years into our marriage, I was finally diagnosed with pregnancy. I raised my head to share the joy with Preston Radcliff, only to see him typing, a faint smile on his lips.

"Honey? Honey? Honey?"

I called out to him three times before he snapped out of it.

Later, I often asked him, "Why do you keep in touch with your ex-girlfriend, Brianna Rook?"

Preston always replied confidently, "There's nothing between us, and besides, we're married and she has a boyfriend."

But he knew full well that it made me sad.

In the end, I chose to tell the doctor, "Please help me terminate this pregnancy."

...

"Doctor, can this pregnancy be terminated?"

Today was a routine check-up day. Since I found out I was pregnant, Preston had accompanied me to every hospital visit, no matter how busy he was.

While I was thinking of a way to avoid him and ask the doctor this question, his phone rang. He seemed to have encountered some problem and I saw him through the window, frowning and talking to someone for a long time.

When Preston returned, he didn't say anything, but seemed a bit distracted. I asked him what was wrong.

He hesitated before speaking, "A big client came to the company and specifically asked for me to go, but you—"

I interrupted him, "Then go quickly. I'll be here for a while, work is important."

He repeatedly confirmed my expression. Seeing that I was smiling, he finally felt relieved, brushed his hand over my head, and kissed me on the lips.

"Thank you, honey. After your check-up, wait for me at the hospital. I'll be back soon to pick you up."

After ensuring Preston was completely gone, I dropped my smile and asked the doctor the question.

The doctor was startled. "You want to terminate this pregnancy?"

I nodded.

The doctor said the baby was very healthy, and since it was already difficult for me to conceive, now was the most suitable age. Besides, I had a wonderful husband and should reconsider my decision.

After thinking for a long time, I said, "Okay."

The check-up was over, and I waited in the hospital lobby for a long time, even until lunchtime, but Preston didn't show up. I had to call him.

The phone rang once and was immediately hung up. Then a message from Preston came in.

"Sorry, honey. I'm really busy, I forgot about you. I'm still swamped right now. Please take a cab home yourself. What would you like to eat? I'll come home early to cook for you."

His words were full of affection and apology.

If I hadn't seen Brianna's Instagram, I would have thought he was truly busy.

I opened Brianna's Instagram.

The caption read, "What a great man, how could I have given him up!"

The picture showed Preston helping her assemble a bookshelf, sweat covering his forehead. His rolled-up sleeves revealed strong arms, and Brianna was by his side, wiping his sweat.

The post was made just half an hour after he left the hospital.

There were comments from Preston’s colleagues below.

"Wow, they look so good together. The boss is still so nice to Brianna."

"It's such a pity, such a perfect couple."

Brianna replied with a "shy" emoji.

They probably didn't know that when Preston first introduced Brianna to me, she added me as a friend.

I silently liked the post.

Less than a minute later, my phone rang.

It was Preston, who had just been too busy to answer my call.

"Honey, don't misunderstand. I was on my way to the office when I got Brianna's call. Her boyfriend is on a business trip, and she couldn't move those cabinets by herself. I was just helping her."

I replied lightly, "I’m not misunderstanding. I liked her compliment about you."

He breathed a sigh of relief.

And on my end, I forced a smile.
