He Ran From Me as I Ran Out of Time
Chapter 2
Gina tugged on Caleb's sleeve and said pitifully, "Don't be mad anymore, Caleb. It's my fault. I was the one who was allergic to the expired makeup. I'm sure Cecile didn't mean it. Please don't blame it on her."
Caleb felt sorry for her and said, "It's not your fault. It would be great if Cecile could be as sensible as you."
Then, he sighed helplessly and added, "I even bought her a gift to apologize, but she still went after you."
He bought me a gift?
That was clearly a used sample of a serum Caleb had given to Gina. He didn't even put any effort into an apology gift.
No, he did put in effort, just not for me.
For Gina's birthday last year, he had someone bring back a priceless diamond from South Effron.
As for our wedding rings, they were just cheap rhinestones worth a few hundred dollars from a store.
He had claimed that our love was sacred and couldn't be measured by money.
Gina touched her face, which was still irritated from the allergy. Her skin was slightly red.
She said, "Caleb, do you think my face will stay this way? How will I act in the future?"
Caleb patted her hand and replied, "Don't worry. I'll hire the best esthetician to take care of you."
Then, he took out his phone and called the housekeeper.
"Has Cecile been reflecting on her mistakes over the past few days? How is it going? If she's realized she was wrong, let her come out," Caleb said. "If she apologizes sincerely to Gina, I'll forgive her.
"If she hadn't deliberately used expired makeup on Gina, Gina wouldn't have spent the last three days suffering in the hospital, would she?"
"But—" The housekeeper was about to say they couldn't open the cellar door, but Caleb cut her off.
"No buts. Just do as I say. There's an air vent down there. It's not like she'll suffocate."
Then, Caleb hung up without giving the housekeeper a chance to explain.
I let out a hopeless, bitter laugh.
There was an air vent in the cellar, but after Caleb left, Gina had sealed it.
I really had suffocated to death down there, just like he said.
He hadn't even bothered to investigate before deciding I was the one who used expired makeup on Gina.
During the last shoot three days ago, I was in charge of doing Gina's makeup.
At the time, she specifically gave me a bottle of foundation, saying that this brand suited her skin.
I carefully checked the expiration date to make sure it was safe before applying it to her face.
But who would have known? She had switched the good foundation with the expired one.
Caleb had been in the entertainment industry for so long, yet he couldn't even see through such a cheap trick. Wasn't that clearly blatant favoritism?
But when I thought about how he canceled our wedding 52 times because of Gina, it wasn't surprising anymore.
To him, I was never as important as Gina.
But it didn't matter anymore. I was already dead in the cellar. Now, he could openly give all his love to Gina.
Gina tugged on Caleb's sleeve and spoke with feigned sadness.
"Forget it, Caleb. I'm just a newcomer. I don't have the right to make her apologize to me."
Caleb hurriedly said, "Who says you don't have the right? You might just be an up-and-coming actress now, but I'll give you the best resources. Soon, you'll become a big star."
My spirit watched coldly from the side.
Caleb used to say the same to me. He promised to give me a happy life and a bright future.
But I didn't want to wade into the messy world of entertainment, so he had let me stay by his side as a makeup artist. He said this was one way he could see me every day.
The promises he once made turned to nothing. How did we end up despising each other so much?
Just then, a crew member, Nina Webbs, walked up to Caleb and said the next scene was about to start. Gina should get ready for it.
But Caleb cut her off and said, "Gina's not feeling well. Her scenes can wait a few days."
Nina sighed. "No offense, Caleb, but you're about to get married. Could you at least rein it in a little and keep a distance from other women?"
The cameraman nearby also nodded. "Yeah, Cecile won't be happy to see this. Be careful, or she might get disappointed enough to give up on you one day.
Caleb felt his chest clench at those words, and his body trembled ever so slightly.
Then, he pretended not to care and said, "That's impossible. Cecile loves me so much that she even planned 52 weddings for me. She would never leave me over such a minor thing."
