Chapter 2

Ryan's dressing room smelled of coffee, hair spray, and expensive cedar cologne. I dropped Tessa's blazer onto the sofa and closed the door behind me.

He stood at the vanity knotting a silk tie. "Did you see the live share? Thirty-two percent during the family segment. The sponsors are thrilled."

"End the screen-couple contract."

His hands stopped.

"Excuse me?"

"Call publicity. Tell them you and Tessa are colleagues, not lovers. Tell the truth about Leo."

Ryan turned from the mirror with the weary expression he used whenever I challenged him. "We have discussed this."

"You called security on your son."

"I prevented a live crisis."

"You humiliated him."

"You brought him into a press corridor."

"It was Family Day."

"For employees whose families are public. Ours is not."

I stared at him. He said it so casually, as if secrecy were a weather condition rather than a choice he made every morning.

"He spent three days drawing that microphone."

Ryan picked up his cuff links. "I'll buy him the Galactic Cruiser set. He'll forget by dinner."

"Children do not forget being rejected by their fathers."

"Keep your voice down."

"Why? Is the truth bad for acoustics?"

His face hardened. "You are not going to destroy a multimillion-dollar contract over a child's hurt feelings."

A laugh scraped out of me. "You really believe your own scripts."

Ryan stepped closer and reached for my waist. "Come on, Claire. You're tired. We are a team. Everything I do is for our future."

I shoved him back. His hip struck the vanity, sloshing coffee across the marble.

"Do not touch me."

His surprise turned quickly to anger. "What is wrong with you?"

"Do you remember the reporters at the condo in December?"

His gaze slid toward the door. "That was an emergency."

"You dragged Leo into the guest-room closet and locked him there."

"For fifteen minutes."

"Three hours."

"The interview ran long."

"He was terrified of the dark. He wet his clothes because he was afraid to knock."

Ryan wiped coffee from his cuff with a tissue. "I apologized."

"You sent him a toy."

"He liked the toy."

"You never even went into his room."

Ryan tossed the tissue into the bin. "What do you want from me? I have the most visible job in the country. One photograph of a secret child and every tabloid starts asking why I lied. The network could invoke the morality clause. Tessa and I could lose the show. You could lose your job too."

"I already lost more than a job."

Ryan frowned, impatient with any pain he could not convert into a scheduling problem. On the vanity behind him lay Leo's birthday reminder in my handwriting, circled twice on the printed rundown. Ryan had moved his Paris departure earlier that morning and never mentioned the conflict.

"You approved the travel window," he said when he noticed me looking.

"I approved a departure after Leo's party. Publicity changed it, and you accepted."

"The private jet slot was limited. He is six, Claire. We can celebrate tomorrow."

"You told him tonight. He has been counting the hours."

Ryan's expression hardened with the annoyance of a man being asked to honor his own words. "Then manage his expectations. You manage everyone else's."

He narrowed his eyes. "What does that mean?"

I had not planned to tell him yet, but the signed acceptance letter burned like a live coal in my phone.

"It means I am done producing a lie."

Ryan's phone rang. He glanced at the screen and instantly straightened.

"It's the network president. We are finalizing the renewal."

He answered in his warm broadcast voice. "Walter, great timing. Claire and I were just discussing how excited we are about the next year."

I walked to the door.

Ryan covered the phone. "Production meeting in twenty minutes."

"Find another producer."

His smile vanished. "Do not embarrass me."

"You managed that by yourself."

I returned to my office, shut down my computer, and copied only the files that belonged to me: performance reviews, schedules, and ratings analyses with my authorship stamped into the metadata. I left Eastline's confidential material on the server. I had built Ryan's career, but I would not give him an excuse to call me a thief.

Leo watched from the sofa. "Are we going home?"

"First, we're getting your birthday cake."

His face brightened. He turned six that evening. Ryan had promised to be home by seven with the action figure Leo wanted.

As we reached the elevator, Ryan caught up to us.

"Where are you taking him?"

"Home."

"You cannot leave before the sponsor meeting."

"Watch me."

His eyes dropped to the box of personal belongings in my arms. "What is this?"

"My resignation. Formal copy will be on your desk tonight."

For the first time all day, Ryan looked genuinely frightened.

"You are bluffing."

"I accepted a chief producer position in Seattle."

"Seattle?" He barked a laugh. "A regional station? You would throw away Eastline for that?"

"I'm not throwing away anything worth keeping."

The elevator doors opened.

Ryan grabbed the edge before they closed. "You cannot take Leo across the country without discussing it with me."

"You refused to be listed as his father. Legally, there is nothing to discuss."

His face drained.

Then Tessa's assistant hurried down the hall waving a tablet. "Ryan, the Paris teaser is trending. Walter needs you in Studio A now."

Ryan looked from the assistant to Leo.

The choice lasted less than a second.

"We will finish this later," he told me, releasing the elevator door.

As we descended, Leo stared at the closing seam.

"Is Dad coming to my party?"

I held his hand tighter. "He knows where we live."

In the parking garage, the entertainment channel cut into the music.

"Breaking news from Eastline Network," the host announced. "Ryan Bennett and Tessa Miller will fly to Paris tonight for a weeklong Valentine's special. The network is calling it their most romantic event yet."

Leo looked at me from the back seat.

"But tonight is my birthday."

I started the engine.

"I know, sweetheart."
