He Hid Our Son for Ratings—So I Took His Prime-Time Throne Novel Cover

He Hid Our Son for Ratings—So I Took His Prime-Time Throne

After years of producing Ryan Bennett's top-rated broadcast while he kept their five-year-old son a secret and demanded the boy call him "Mr. Bennett," I finally broke. At a network event, he pushed Leo away to hold co-anchor Tessa's nephew, and my plea to end the sham earned only a cold promise to wait for his contract renewal. He thought the mansion and my silence would hold me. He was wrong. I resigned, packed our bags, and brought Leo to his rival's Seattle studio—ready to take everything.

Chapter 3

At eight forty-five, wax ran down the blue birthday candles and pooled in the frosting.

Leo sat across from the empty chair at our dining table. His paper party crown had slipped over one eyebrow. Every few minutes, he looked toward the front door.

"Call him again, Mommy."

"I've called four times."

"Maybe the plane hasn't left."

I picked up my phone because he was six and still believed adults kept promises. Ryan's number went straight to voicemail.

"He said he would bring the Galactic Cruiser," Leo whispered.

"I know."

"Secret agents don't break promises."

The lie had lasted long enough.

"Ryan isn't a secret agent," I said. "He's a man who made the wrong choice."

Leo's chin trembled. "Did he choose Tessa?"

Before I could answer, the television in the living room began playing an autoplay clip from Eastline's social account. Tessa appeared beneath a crystal chandelier in Paris, laughing into her phone camera.

"Our first dinner in the City of Love!" she said.

The camera swung toward Ryan. He cut a piece of steak and held the fork to her mouth.

"Only the best for my favorite partner," he said.

Tessa leaned against his shoulder. "And Ryan has a huge surprise planned for Valentine's Day."

Leo stood in the archway.

Ryan smiled at millions of strangers with a warmth he had denied his son that morning.

I shut off the television.

"He isn't coming," Leo said.

"No."

He removed his paper crown, folded it carefully, and placed it beside the untouched plate. Then he carried the blue drawing from Family Day to the kitchen trash and dropped it inside.

He did not cry. That frightened me more than tears would have.

I knelt beside him. "How would you feel about an adventure?"

"What kind?"

"A new city. A new school. A place where nobody has to pretend you don't belong."

"Can I tell people who my dad is there?"

I swallowed. "You never have to lie about yourself again."

We packed only what mattered. Clothes, school records, medications, the blue stuffed bear Leo had slept with since infancy. I left the jewelry Ryan gave me after missed anniversaries and broken promises. I left the designer furniture, the wine collection, and every photograph staged by Eastline publicity.

I emailed Oak Creek Elementary from the kitchen floor while Leo chose three books for his backpack. The registrar confirmed a Monday start and sent a checklist for immunization records. Seattle's relocation coordinator arranged a furnished apartment, a rental car, and temporary childcare for my first week. Every practical answer made the decision more real.

Our neighbor, Mrs. Alvarez, found me carrying a suitcase to the elevator and offered to watch Leo while I finished packing. She did not ask why. She simply pressed a bag of sandwiches into my hands and said, "A woman leaving before dawn usually needs food more than questions."

I nearly cried at the uncomplicated kindness. Ryan had spent years convincing me the world outside his protection would be hostile. Yet the first person I met on the way out helped without demanding silence in return.

Before leaving, I photographed every room and emailed the images to myself. I recorded the jewelry, the untouched accounts, and the condition of the townhouse. Ryan had taught me to anticipate a narrative. This time, I preserved the facts before he could rewrite them.

In the back of my closet, I found a small metal lockbox. It held Leo's original birth certificate, medical records, and the notarized acknowledgment Ryan had signed at the hospital but refused to file. I had kept it because some foolish part of me believed he would one day ask to make it official.

I placed the document in my bag. If he came after us, I would not be unprepared.

At eleven thirty, Leo fell asleep in his coat on the sofa. I carried our bags to the car, then drove to Eastline one final time.

The night guard waved me through. "Working late, Claire?"

"Not anymore, Eddie."

The main studio was dark except for the emergency lights. Ryan's polished anchor desk gleamed at center stage, the throne he believed made him untouchable.

I placed my signed resignation on top of his morning script. My badge followed with a plastic clack.

On the reverse side, I wrote one sentence in black ink.

You chose the audience. Leo and I choose ourselves.

I set the pen down rather than destroying the desk. I was not leaving as a woman out of control. I was leaving as the producer who understood exactly how evidence worked.

My phone buzzed.

Seattle's relocation coordinator had sent boarding passes for the six-ten flight and the address of a furnished apartment near Cascade Evening News. Beneath it sat twelve missed calls from Ryan's manager and one voice message from Ryan.

I pressed play.

"Claire, I heard about the resignation. This is ridiculous. We will discuss it when I get back next week. Do not make any decisions until then. And keep Leo away from social media while I'm gone."

Not one word about the birthday.

I deleted the message.

At JFK, dawn turned the terminal windows gray. Leo slept against my shoulder at the gate while I watched the departure board change from ON TIME to BOARDING.

A breaking-news alert flashed across my phone.

RYAN BENNETT AND TESSA MILLER HINT AT VALENTINE'S ENGAGEMENT.

I turned the screen off.

"Ms. Adams?" the gate agent called. "We are ready for you and your son."

I stood, shifted Leo higher in my arms, and walked down the jet bridge without looking back.

Halfway to the plane, my phone rang again. This time the caller ID displayed EASTLINE SECURITY.

I answered.

"Claire," the overnight supervisor said, breathless. "Ryan's private jet landed early. He is in the studio, and he found your letter."

A crash sounded in the background, followed by Ryan shouting my name.

"He wants to know where you took Leo," the supervisor whispered.

The flight attendant held out her hand for my boarding pass.

I ended the call and stepped onto the plane.
