Chapter 2

"Are you asking her to borrow a piece of jewelry, Adrian," I asked, keeping my hand firmly behind my back, "or are you asking her to borrow my identity as your wife?"

Adrian flinched, the accusation hitting its mark. He dragged a hand through his styled hair, ruining the gelled perfection. "Do not twist this into something malicious. It is just one night."

"It is my wedding band."

"And she saved my career!" he snapped, his voice echoing off the marble floor. "When the youth contract scandal broke, she told the press she organized that party. She took weeks of abuse so I could keep my spot on the roster. You know that."

"I know what she did," I replied, refusing to break eye contact. "That debt is why she is sleeping in my guest room. It is not a blank check for my life."

Bella shrank against the oak door frame, wrapping her arms around her thin waist. "I should just stay home. I do not want to cause trouble."

She turned toward the stairs, her shoulders trembling violently under the white silk shawl.

Adrian caught her arm. He shot me a look of pure disgust. "Look what you are doing to her. She is terrified."

"She is manipulating you," I said, my voice steady.

"Stop being so cold," Adrian fired back. "She just needs an anchor for the press."

I stared at the man I married. I brought my left hand forward, sliding the platinum band over my knuckle. The metal felt heavy, warm from my skin. I did not take it off because I agreed with him. I took it off to see if he would actually turn our sacred vow into a temporary pacifier.

I dropped the ring into his open palm.

Adrian did not hesitate. He turned to Bella, pressing the diamonds into her hand. "Here. Just wear it on your right hand."

As if changing the finger changed what the ring meant.

Bella slipped it on. The platinum band hung loosely on her thin finger, but she curled her hand into a fist, securing it. "Thank you, Adrian. I feel safer already."

Camera flashes blinded me the second we stepped onto the velvet carpet at the country club.

Bella walked two paces ahead of us, the silver-blue silk hugging her frame. The photographers shouted her name, their lenses zooming in on the sparkling diamond on her right hand.

"Mr. Vale, always taking good care of old friends," the club manager said, greeting us at the entrance. He eyed Bella's dress and the jewelry, clearly assuming it was a coordinated brand styling.

"She needed a night out," Adrian replied smoothly, shaking the manager's hand.

I stood on Adrian's left side, my fingers bare.

I spent two years transforming this youth sports initiative into a multi-million-dollar annual project. I handled every family invitation, negotiated the catering, and secured the donors. Yet, the massive digital screen towering over the ballroom displayed only one line of text: Adrian Vale Foundation.

My name existed nowhere.

"Mrs. Vale!" A reporter shoved a microphone past the velvet rope. "We usually see that heirloom diamond on your finger. Where is it tonight?"

Adrian stepped in front of me, flashing his signature press smile. "Sent it in for maintenance. You know how these vintage settings get."

"Ah, keeping it safe," the reporter laughed.

A few feet away, Bella raised a champagne flute to her lips. The chandelier light caught the platinum band on her right hand, broadcasting it to the entire room.

"Mrs. Vale, the caterers need approval for the dessert substitution," a waiter said, approaching me near the ice sculpture.

Before I could answer, Adrian appeared beside me. "Run it by Bella," he told the waiter. "She has the dietary list memorized."

The waiter blinked, confused, but nodded and walked away.

I turned to Adrian. "I hired that catering company. I planned the menu."

"And Bella needs a distraction to keep her anxiety down," he replied easily, sipping his drink. "Let her feel useful."

"Useful?" I repeated. "She is wearing my dress, wearing my ring, and now she is approving my event details."

"Keep your voice down," he hissed, glancing around to see if anyone heard. "You are making a scene over nothing."

"I want it back the second this dinner ends," I told him, my voice low and hard.

Adrian checked his watch, refusing to meet my eyes. "Fine. Just do not embarrass Bella here. She is fragile tonight."

That sentence snapped the last thread of my loyalty.

I stopped trying to play the supportive wife. I walked over to the registration desk. The head coordinator, a young woman I hired last spring, handed me the final guest list.

"Mrs. Vale, your husband requested a change to the head table," she whispered, pointing to the diagram.

I scanned the paper. Adrian had moved Bella from table nine to the seat directly on his right. My seat remained on his left.

"Leave it," I instructed, taking a photo of the document with my phone. "Let him have exactly what he asked for."

I spent the rest of the evening archiving my own erasure. Every time a donor thanked Adrian for the floral arrangements I picked out, I logged the interaction. Every time a photographer snapped a picture of Bella wearing my ring, I saved the image URL. I accessed the foundation portal, forwarding the charity emails Adrian had sent using my signature directly to my private server.

If I stayed silent, my entire life would be rewritten by them.

The matte-black SUV ride home passed in total silence. Adrian stared out the window, texting someone on his phone. Bella sat in the front seat, humming a quiet tune while tracing the diamonds on her right hand.

I did not chase Bella down the hall for my ring when we walked through the front door. I went straight to the master bedroom and opened my nightstand drawer. I pulled out the velvet jewelry box, placed it dead center on Adrian's pillow, and flipped the lid open.

The empty slot stared up at him when he walked in to untie his shoes.

"Before dawn," I told him, pointing to the box.

Adrian sighed, loosening his bowtie. "I will go get it. Go to sleep, Nora."

"Do not come back into this room without it," I warned.

"I said I will get it," he snapped, tossing his jacket over a chair.

He walked out, heading toward the guest wing.

I turned off the bedside lamp, leaving the room in darkness. Sleep was impossible. I lay under the covers, listening to the faint hum of the air conditioning. The digital clock on the dresser glowed a neon red. One o'clock. One-thirty.

At two in the morning, my phone buzzed on the nightstand.

The bright screen illuminated the dark room. A text message from Bella appeared on the lock screen.

I washed my hands in the bathroom. The ring is gone.

Before I could process the words, footsteps pounded down the hallway. The bedroom door slammed against the wall.

Adrian filled the doorway, his face hard.
