Chapter 5

"He begged," I said, dropping the heavy metal voice modulator into the top drawer of my mahogany desk.

"Julian Thorne does not beg," Alexander replied, leaning against the doorframe of my office. "He negotiates from a position of imagined strength."

I slammed the drawer shut. The sharp crack echoed through the quiet penthouse suite. "He offered me thirty percent of his own company just to keep the lights on."

Alexander pushed off the doorframe and walked further into the room. "What did you tell him?"

"I told him no."

"Good."

"He sounded terrified," I added, leaning against the edge of the desk. "He actually offered to hand over the European hubs permanently. He has no idea we already own them."

"Panic makes men stupid," Alexander said, walking over to the conference table. He picked up the Hostile Takeover Agreement. "He is bleeding capital by the hour. The board of directors will demand his resignation by noon tomorrow if he does not secure funding."

"Which is why he will show up at eight," I concluded.

"He thinks this mystery CEO is his savior," Alexander noted, tossing the contract back onto the table. "He thinks he can charm his way out of a financial death spiral."

"Julian always believed his charisma was his greatest asset," I sneered. "He used it to convince investors to back his failing startup three years ago. He used it to convince me to fix his broken code."

"And he used it to convince Chloe to wear your grandmother's ring," Alexander pointed out.

My jaw tightened. "Chloe is a parasite. She will abandon him the second the bank repossesses the penthouse."

"She already tried," Alexander revealed, stopping near the edge of my desk.

I snapped my head up. "What do you mean?"

"I intercepted an email this afternoon," Alexander said, his tone entirely casual. "Chloe reached out to a real estate broker in Monaco. She asked about short-term luxury rentals. Single occupancy."

A harsh laugh escaped my throat. "She is planning her exit strategy."

"She knows Thorne Enterprises is sinking," Alexander confirmed. "She just does not know how fast the ship is going down."

"Do not block her emails," I ordered. "Let her make her arrangements. I want Julian to read those messages after he signs the liquidation papers."

"Cruel," Alexander remarked.

"Thorough," I corrected him.

I pushed away from the desk and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. The neon lights of the downtown district blurred in the distance. Julian's unfinished skyscraper stood out like a jagged tooth against the horizon.

"Look at it," I murmured, pointing at the dark steel frame. "The construction site is completely dark."

"The vendors locked the gates," Alexander said, stepping up beside me. "They parked their trucks across the main entrance. No one goes in or out until the invoices are paid."

"They will never be paid," I stated flatly. "Not by Julian, anyway."

"We will clear the debts on Monday," Alexander assured me. "Once Apex holds the deed to the property."

A garment bag lay draped over the leather sofa near the window. I unzipped the canvas cover, pulled out the blood-red blazer I had selected for the signing ceremony, and slipped my arms through the silk-lined sleeves.

The tailored fabric hugged my waist perfectly. I adjusted the lapels, staring at my reflection in the darkened glass.

"Is red too aggressive for a corporate execution?" I asked, smoothing a microscopic crease on the cuff.

"Red is exactly what you wear when you intend to leave no survivors," Alexander said.

The faint clink of ice against crystal drew my attention. Alexander stepped up right behind me. He extended his hand, offering a heavy tumbler of amber liquid.

I took the glass. Our fingers brushed. The chill of the ice transferred to my skin, a sharp contrast to the heat radiating from his chest just inches from my back.

I did not turn around. Instead, I met his gaze in the reflection of the window. His dark eyes locked onto mine, unblinking and entirely focused.

"To the hostile takeover," I said, raising the tumbler to the glass. The bourbon burned pleasantly down my throat.

"Tomorrow night at eight," Alexander murmured, his gaze never leaving my reflection. "He will walk into that boardroom expecting a lifeline. He will find the guillotine instead."

"He will bring his lawyers," I noted, turning the glass in my hand. "He will try to find a loophole in the liquidation clause."

"Let him bring an army of attorneys," Alexander scoffed. "The contracts are ironclad. The moment his pen touches the paper, Thorne Enterprises ceases to exist. Tomorrow is the beginning of his nightmare."

I smiled. A real, genuine smile that stretched the corners of my mouth. "I want to see his face when he realizes the CEO of Apex is the woman he threw out on the street."

"You will see it," Alexander promised. "And then you will take his empire, his penthouse, and his pride."

"Julian always hated red," I said, filling the silence. "He said it made me look desperate for attention."

"Julian is an idiot," Alexander replied flatly. "He wanted you invisible. He wanted you small so he could feel large."

"He succeeded for three years," I admitted, swirling the remaining ice in my glass.

"You let him succeed," Alexander corrected. "You handed him the blueprint to your own genius and stepped into the shadows. Never do that again."

"I have no intention of hiding," I said, lifting my chin. "When I walk into that boardroom tomorrow, I want him to know I orchestrated every single failure he experienced this week."

"The frozen offshore accounts," Alexander listed, ticking off his fingers. "The European supply chain collapse. The steel vendor strike."

"All me," I confirmed.

"Do not forget Chloe's declined credit card," Alexander added, a faint smirk touching his lips.

I laughed aloud. The sound bounced off the glass panes. "That was your doing. You intercepted the bank alert."

"Consider it a bonus," he said.

The space between us suddenly felt too narrow. The scent of his cedar cologne mixed with the sharp bite of the bourbon. I shifted my weight, taking a half-step backward.

My heel caught the edge of the rug. I stumbled slightly.

Alexander caught my elbow. His grip was firm, anchoring me instantly.

"Careful," he warned, his tone shifting from professional to something far more intimate.

"I am fine," I said, my voice tighter than I intended. I pulled my arm away.

He let go immediately, but he did not step away. He remained in my space, towering over me. The power dynamic shifted, a heavy, unspoken challenge hanging in the air between us.

I set the empty tumbler on the windowsill. The red blazer felt like armor, but under his intense scrutiny, the fabric felt paper-thin.

"Are the security teams briefed for tomorrow?" I asked, forcing the conversation back to business.

"Marcus Cole is the only one who might cause a scene," Alexander stated, crossing his arms. "He is loyal to Julian."

"Cole is loyal to his paycheck," I countered, grateful for the familiar territory of corporate strategy. "Once Thorne Enterprises is liquidated, Cole will be unemployed. Offer him double his current salary to stay on as the Apex CFO."

Alexander raised an eyebrow. "You want to poach Julian's right-hand man?"

"I want to strip Julian of every single asset he possesses," I clarified, my voice steadying. "Including his loyalists. By the time the ink dries, he will be completely alone."

"Ruthless," Alexander observed.

"Effective," I replied.

"Julian will throw a tantrum," Alexander warned. "He might become violent when he sees you sitting at the head of the table."

"Let him try," I challenged, gripping the edge of the windowsill. "I want him to lose his temper in front of the entire board of directors. It will only prove my point."

"He will call you a fraud."

"He can call me whatever he wants," I said, turning to face Alexander fully. "The original equity subscription agreement proves I own eighty percent of Apex. He signed the divorce papers handing me the remaining twenty percent. The paperwork is flawless."

"You planned this perfectly," Alexander murmured, his eyes dropping to my mouth for a fraction of a second before meeting my gaze again.

"We planned this perfectly," I corrected him. "I could not have frozen the Cayman accounts without your contacts at the international trade commission."

"I merely provided the tools," Alexander said softly. "You built the trap."

"And tomorrow, we spring it."

"Are you ready?" he asked, his voice dropping low again.

"I have been ready since the day he kicked me out of my own home," I answered, my jaw tightening.

Alexander stepped closer, closing the gap I had just created. He reached out, his hand moving toward my neck.

I froze, my muscles locking in place.

His hand hovered inches from my throat.

Alexander extended his index finger, stopping it directly in front of the top button of my collar.
