Chapter 3

Three months after Julian kicked me out of his penthouse, I sat at the head of the glass conference table in Apex Headquarters.

Alexander slid a sleek silver tablet across the polished mahogany. His knuckles brushed the edge of the screen.

"They are live on Channel Four," he said, tapping the play icon.

I looked past his hand, fixing my eyes on the two figures standing on the steps of the city courthouse. Julian Thorne wore a sharp charcoal suit, his arm wrapped tightly around Chloe Mercer’s waist.

"We are thrilled to announce Thorne Enterprises is expanding," Julian told the cluster of reporters, flashing his signature arrogant smile. "Our new downtown development project will break ground next week."

Chloe leaned into his shoulder, flashing the massive diamond ring—my grandmother’s ring—at the cameras. "Julian has worked so hard. I am just so proud of my future husband."

"Fools," I muttered, pushing the tablet away.

"He has no idea," Alexander noted, taking the seat to my right. "He just leveraged his remaining liquidity to fund the downtown project."

"Show me the consolidated report," I demanded.

Alexander opened a black leather folder and handed me a stack of spreadsheets. "As of this morning, Apex holds the debt notes on seventy percent of Thorne Enterprises' core assets. We shorted his tech division, quietly bought up his supplier contracts, and boxed in his real estate holdings."

I traced the red numbers running down the final column. "Seventy percent. He is running a ghost ship and does not even realize the hull is gone."

"He thinks he is expanding," Alexander said, a rare smirk crossing his face. "In reality, he is signing over the last of his collateral to us. The trap is completely set, Victoria."

I curled my fingers inward. My nails dug sharply into my palms, the brief sting grounding me.

"He called me a mistake," I said, keeping my voice low. "He handed me Apex to watch me drown."

"Instead, you built a submarine," Alexander replied. "And loaded it with torpedoes."

"What about his European distribution hubs?" I asked.

"Liquidated," Alexander replied. "We bought out his primary logistics partner in Berlin last month. As of midnight, they refuse to ship any Thorne cargo."

"Did Julian notice the drop in revenue?"

"He blamed it on seasonal market fluctuations," Alexander scoffed. "He fired his European manager to save face."

"Perfect. Hire the manager for Apex. We need someone who knows the layout of those hubs."

"Already done. He starts Monday."

"And the offshore accounts?" I pressed, leaning forward. "The Cayman funds he used to hide three million dollars?"

Alexander tapped his screen, bringing up a secure banking portal. "I submitted the original patent deed to the international trade commission. Because he used the micro-routing software to process those funds, the commission flagged the accounts as proceeds of intellectual property theft."

"So they are frozen."

"Completely iced," Alexander confirmed. "Julian cannot withdraw a single cent. He is living entirely on credit right now."

"Credit that is about to dry up," I said.

"He thinks he is a king," Alexander murmured, closing the portal. "But his castle is built on our land."

"Are the M&A documents ready?"

"The final merger and acquisition contract is drafted," Alexander confirmed, pulling a thick, stapled document from his briefcase. "Once he defaults on the supplier payments next Friday, Thorne Enterprises will automatically trigger the liquidation clause. Apex will swallow his entire empire for pennies on the dollar."

I picked up the contract. The title page read Hostile Takeover Agreement.

"He will lose the penthouse," I stated.

"He will lose the cars, the company, and the offshore accounts we froze last week," Alexander corrected. "He will be left with absolutely nothing."

I let out a short, sharp laugh. "I wonder if Chloe will still want to marry him when he is bankrupt."

"Doubtful. Her credit card was declined at a boutique in Paris two days ago. I intercepted the bank alert."

"You did not tell me that."

"I wanted to save some good news for today."

"We need to tighten the noose," I said, flipping to the third page of the contract. "What about the micro-routing software patent? The one Julian thinks he owns?"

"We officially filed the enforcement injunction this morning," Alexander replied. "Any system using that software without Apex's direct authorization is committing corporate espionage. Thorne Enterprises relies on it for their entire logistics network."

"So, if he tries to move assets..."

"He commits a federal crime," Alexander finished.

"Are you worried Julian will figure it out before next Friday?" Alexander asked, leaning against the glass wall.

"Julian only looks at the bottom line," I replied, tracing the signature block on the contract. "He does not read the fine print. He never has. When his startup was failing three years ago, I was the one who negotiated the debt restructuring. He just showed up to the final meetings to shake hands and take the credit."

"He relied on you completely," Alexander noted.

"And he punished me for it," I said. "He hated knowing his success depended on his wife. So he found Chloe. Someone who would just smile, wear expensive dresses, and tell him how brilliant he was."

"A fatal ego trip," Alexander said. "He traded a master strategist for a cheerleader."

"And now he is playing a game without knowing the rules," I finished. "There is one variable left, though."

I lowered my chin, locking eyes with him. "Marcus Cole."

"Julian is arrogant, but his new CFO is not," Alexander admitted. "Cole noticed the supply chain discrepancies yesterday."

"Cole is smart," I said. "Did he trace the shell companies back to Apex?"

"Not yet. But he requested an emergency audit of the tech division."

"Deny it," I ordered.

"We do not control his audit board," Alexander pointed out.

"We control the bank that funds his audit board," I countered, tapping the mahogany table. "Call the regional director at First National. Tell him to stall the audit for exactly ten days. By the time Cole gets the numbers, Thorne Enterprises will already belong to me."

Alexander nodded, pulling out his phone. "I will make the call now."

The heavy glass door swung open. My new assistant, Elena, hurried in carrying a stack of files.

"Ms. Sterling," Elena said, her voice slightly breathless. "The vendors from the downtown project are calling. They want to know why their supply shipments were halted."

"Tell them Thorne Enterprises failed to clear the escrow accounts," I instructed, not looking up from the M&A contract.

"But they are threatening to walk off the job site," Elena warned, shifting the files in her arms. "The foreman said if the steel beams do not arrive by noon tomorrow, they will strike."

"Let them strike," I said, my tone flat. "Julian cannot build a skyscraper without steel, and he cannot buy steel without my permission. Route all vendor complaints directly to his corporate office. Let him deal with the panic."

"What if they threaten to sue us?" Elena asked, her brow furrowing. "Apex technically holds the supply contracts now."

"They will not sue us," Alexander interjected from the corner of the room. "The contracts stipulate that Apex is merely the holding entity. Thorne Enterprises remains the sole guarantor of payment. The legal liability falls entirely on Julian."

Elena exhaled a sigh of relief. "Understood. Also, the design team needs your approval on the new Apex logo."

"Leave it on the desk. I will review it later."

Elena set the files down and hurried out, the glass door clicking shut behind her.

Alexander stepped out of the glass-walled office a moment later, leaving me alone with the financial reports.

I stared down at the tablet again. The news broadcast had switched to a replay of Julian and Chloe kissing on the courthouse steps.

"You reset my grandmother's diamond for your mistress," I whispered to the empty room. "I am going to reset your entire life."

I closed the folder, aligning the edges perfectly with the corner of the desk. The M&A contract sat right in the center, waiting for the final execution date.

The silence in the office was absolute.

Then, a sharp, piercing ring shattered the quiet.

I jumped slightly, my eyes darting across the desk.

It was not my cell phone.

It was the secure red landline sitting on the far corner of my desk. A private number I had set up specifically for the final phase of the acquisition.

Only three people in the world had this number. Alexander, the bank director, and the federal judge handling the injunction.

The digital display lit up with a name.

I stared at the glowing letters, my pulse hammering against my ribs.

The screen displayed Julian Thorne.
