He Found My Worth, Unlike Them Novel Cover

He Found My Worth, Unlike Them

For three years, I was the unpaid maid, cook, and accountant for my boyfriend Kieran's family. His mother, Jeanie, never let me forget my place. "You're not legally family," she'd say, whenever I asked for basic respect. Then I found the messages on his phone. He and Jeanie were arranging his engagement to Carolina Farley, a wealthy heiress. They called me a placeholder—someone who was just "around" until a better option came along. Jeanie sat me down and told me it was time to leave, confident I had nowhere else to go. She was wrong. While they slept, I earned my CPA license. While they spent, I saved every dollar. While they dismissed me as "just the girlfriend," I bought my own condo. When Kieran finally came crawling back, begging for another chance, I had one thing to say: "I'm already married. To a man who didn't need three years to know my worth." He thought I'd wait forever. He thought wrong.

Chapter 2

Aubrey Delacruz

The sharp rap on the bedroom door startled me awake.

"Aubrey! Collin needs his laundry done for his interview! And the breakfast dishes aren't going to clean themselves!"

Jeanie's voice. 6 AM. Not a request. An order.

Kieran stirred beside me, pulled the blanket over his head, and said nothing.

I stared at my reflection in the mirror. Dark circles. Tired eyes. A woman I barely recognized.

Later that morning, Jeanie cornered me with a stack of bills. "Aubrey, dear. Collin needs a new suit for his interview. And he's got some parking tickets. Could you… float him some money?"

She named a figure that made my stomach drop. Five thousand dollars.

"That's a lot of money, Jeanie. I don't know if I can—"

Her smile vanished. "Aubrey, we're family. We help each other out. This is the least you can do if you want to stay."

Collin, lounging on the sofa, chimed in. "Yeah, Aubrey. Come on. Just this once."

I looked at Kieran, who had just walked in. He saw my pleading expression. He saw his mother's demanding one.

"Aubrey, it's for Collin," he said, shrugging. "He really needs this break."

I opened my banking app and transferred the money. Another chunk of my freedom, gone.

Kieran patted my arm. "You're the best, babe."

I walked to the dresser and pulled out a small locked box. Inside was the deed to my condo. One bedroom, one bath. Mine.

A delivery notification buzzed on my phone. The custom frame for my CPA certificate had arrived. I signed for it quickly and hid it under the bed.

Jeanie's head popped out of the living room. "What's that, dear? Another one of your silly books?"

"Just a delivery," I said, my voice even.

That evening, as I prepared dinner, I heard Kieran and Collin from the living room.

"She's such a pushover," Collin laughed. "Always gives in."

Kieran chuckled. "Yeah, well. Not like she has anywhere else to go."

The knife in my hand slipped, narrowly missing my finger.

Not like she has anywhere else to go.

I took a deep breath. Then another.

They thought I was trapped.

They were about to learn the truth.

When the family needed someone to marry a dying billionaire heir, they naturally chose me to take her place. To force my consent, my brothers held a peanut butter sandwich to my face—knowing it was a lethal allergy—while dangling my EpiPen just out of reach. On speakerphone, my own mother sighed in annoyance. "Let her die. It might be for the best." I choked out an agreement just as my throat closed up. But the forced engagement broke my sacred mystical vow, causing me to violently cough up my own lifeblood. Seeing the blood, Seraphina dramatically fainted. My brothers instantly carried her to the hospital, stepping over my dying body and leaving me to bleed out on the cold marble floor. I had to use a forbidden blood rune, draining my last ounce of strength, just to survive the night. Even the mystical Order I served offered no comfort, calling only to demand I secure ten billion dollars for them or forfeit my soul for eternity. Abandoned by my blood family and my spiritual master, I was completely alone, left with nothing but a broken body and a ticking clock. But they made one fatal mistake: they let me live. I turned to the dying heir they forced me to marry, a man plagued by a dark curse only I could cure. "I will be your wife, and I will save your life," I told him. In exchange, I would use his unimaginable wealth and power to make everyone who threw me away pay the ultimate price.
