Chapter 1

: Beg Me

After my family went bankrupt, I was shoved into the bed of my childhood sweetheart, Julian Rhodes.

From that day on, he brought someone home every night and tossed a set of divorce papers at me.

"Moira Shaw, beg me, and I won't divorce you."

From on high, he watched as I begged him time and again, humbling myself into the dust.

He even publicly ordered me to massage the feet of his secretary, Vivian Lynn, in his office.

Then came the day the Shaw Group was just 10 million dollars away from a complete recovery. On that day, Vivian Lynn intercepted all of my desperate calls for help.

I waited for a full twenty-four hours, until the Shaw Group completely collapsed and Mr. and Mrs. Shaw jumped to their deaths.

But Julian Rhodes just pushed open our front door with Vivian Lynn in tow, once again throwing the signed divorce papers in my face.

"Moira Shaw, aren't you looking for me just to get money to save the Shaw Family? Beg me. As long as I don't divorce you, no one will dare touch the Shaw Family."

This time, filled with a calm despair, I signed my name. "Mr. Rhodes, there's no need. The Shaw Family... doesn't need your salvation anymore."

...

The moment I signed the divorce papers, the smug look on Julian Rhodes's face froze solid.

He snatched the signed papers from me, his eyes bloodshot. Grabbing my throat, he seemed to have lost his mind. "Moira Shaw! What kind of trick are you playing now?!"

"Don't forget, you were the one who shamelessly climbed into my bed! It was you who would stop at nothing to marry me!"

"What? Now you're playing the saint? You debased yourself, and for what? Wasn't it just for the money?!"

Each word was uglier than the last.

For the past three years, he had brought these things up repeatedly, constantly humiliating me.

'As if he were afraid I'd forget that it was I, the shameless Moira Shaw, who had climbed into Julian Rhodes's bed.'

I would always cry and deny it.

For three years, I explained myself to him every single day. I thought that one day, he would finally see the sincerity in my heart.

But now my heart was long dead. Whether he believed me or not was irrelevant.

Watching him scream himself hoarse, I only felt an immense exhaustion.

'This weariness was so bone-deep, it made me feel that dying wouldn't be so bad.'

"Moira Shaw! Say something! How dare you look at me like that! You're the one who wronged me!"

Julian Rhodes screamed himself hoarse, venting his fury.

After he had gradually fallen silent, I slowly raised my head. "Are you finished?"

"If you're finished, may I leave?"

It was the first time in three years I had been this calm.

But Julian Rhodes panicked. He scoffed, trying to hide the flicker of alarm in his eyes.

"Leave? And where do you plan on going?"

"You want to leave? Fine. Everything on your body, what part of it wasn't bought with my money? If you want to leave, then you'll leave the same way you came!"

He looked down on me, and through him, I thought I saw the Julian Rhodes of our youth.

Back then, he was terrified I would leave. Every day, he would hold onto me and make me say I loved him.

But all of that had long since been scattered to the winds.

Now, standing before him, I only felt the same degradation as when I was shoved, stark naked, into his bed.

Looking at his eyes, which were practically screaming 'Beg me,' I curled my lips into a smile. "Alright."

I took off the watch on my wrist.

He had threatened me this way many times before.

Every time, I would end up crying and begging him, pleading for him to remember what we once had and not humiliate me like this.

Back then, I was still full of hope for him, and for our future.

But now.

To me, living was more torturous than death.

This humiliation was just the cherry on top of my suffering.

'It hurt, but I didn't care.'

I took off the coat he had given me, then removed the wedding ring from my finger. Staring right at him, I opened my hand.

The wedding ring hit the floor with a crisp sound.

The thing I once treasured above all else was now no different from a cold stone.

I didn't look back at his trembling figure. Barefoot, I walked step by step towards the door.

"Moira Shaw! Are you insane?! Stop right there!"

Julian Rhodes's furious, exasperated roar came from behind me.

But the crisscrossing bruises on my gaunt body were the ultimate mockery of him.

I walked faster and faster, heading for the sunlight, leaving him completely behind.

Watching my retreating figure, Julian Rhodes—whether from anger or sorrow, it was unclear—began to tremble all over. He collapsed to the floor, gasping for breath.

"President Rhodes, Ms. Shaw is so ungrateful. Throwing a tantrum like this just because you didn't answer your phone. Do you think she's seeing someone else?" Vivian Lynn's words were pointedly suggestive.

Julian Rhodes shoved her away violently, his eyes completely bloodshot. "Get out!"

"Fordham, take her clothes to her. She actually dared to leave... What gives her the right to leave me!"

"Moira Shaw, you were the one who wronged me first!"
