Chapter 2

The encrypted phone displayed a green confirmation at 2:17 a.m.

PROXY REVOCATION INITIATED.

I set it beside my laptop and opened the accounting portal I had designed during Miller Dynamics' first year. Tom believed the access had expired when I stepped away from day-to-day operations. It had not. The Ashford trust had required permanent audit rights before guaranteeing his original credit line, and Tom had signed the condition without reading it.

Some habits never changed.

For the next three hours, I traced six months of transactions. On the surface, the books looked polished. Expenses were spread across marketing, consulting, and property development accounts. But the invoices repeated identical language, and several vendor addresses led to mailbox stores in Delaware.

I built a reconciliation sheet, matched the shell companies to their bank-routing numbers, and found the real destination.

Two million dollars had left the corporate reserve and purchased a penthouse overlooking Central Park.

The buyer of record was Bennett Lifestyle Holdings.

Chloe Bennett had incorporated the company eleven weeks earlier.

I sat back slowly. The anger I had controlled in the living room settled into something colder. Tom had not merely cheated. He had diverted investor money, disguised the transfer, and handed the asset to his mistress while Miller Dynamics carried overdue supplier balances.

I highlighted each transaction in red and copied the ledger to the trust's secure server. Then I sent Mark a preservation request.

The reply came within thirty seconds.

Server image underway. Do not confront him yet.

A floorboard creaked outside the study.

I closed the banking window and switched to the divorce petition just as the doorknob turned. It stopped against the lock.

"Sarah?"

The voice belonged to Eleanor Miller, Tom's mother.

I opened the door. Eleanor stood in the hallway wearing a camel coat over a navy dress, her silver hair pinned into its usual precise twist. She held a leather handbag against her side and looked as though she had driven across Westchester without stopping at a single red light.

"Why are you here at dawn?" I asked.

"Because my son called me at midnight and announced that I would finally have a proper daughter-in-law." Her mouth compressed. "Then he sent me a photograph of that woman in your bed."

I stepped aside.

Eleanor entered, locked the door behind her, and placed her handbag on the desk. Her gaze landed on the red spreadsheet before I could minimize it.

"What did he do?"

There was no point pretending. I reopened the supporting files and turned the laptop toward her.

"He routed two million dollars through three shell companies and bought Chloe a penthouse."

Eleanor put on her reading glasses. She examined every line in silence, moving from invoice to wire confirmation to the property record. Unlike Tom, she understood financial statements. She had inherited fifteen percent of Miller Dynamics from her late husband, who had invested in the company during its first expansion.

"That idiot," she said at last.

"The supplier reserve is underfunded by almost the same amount. If one major partner calls its invoices, the company will miss payroll."

Eleanor removed her glasses. "Does Mark know?"

I looked at her sharply.

She gave me a tired, humorless smile. "You never told Tom who you were, but you did not fool me. I met your grandfather twice. Men like Charles Ashford do not send junior associates to negotiate warehouse guarantees. They send the person who will someday control the family office."

"You knew?"

"I knew enough." She glanced toward the locked door. "I also knew my son would resent any woman more powerful than he was. I hoped marriage would make him secure. Instead, it made him entitled."

She opened her handbag and withdrew a thick envelope. A blue notary seal crossed the flap.

"These were prepared last month," she said.

I slid out a stock-transfer agreement. Eleanor was assigning her entire fifteen-percent voting stake to the Ashford trust.

My throat tightened. "Why did you prepare this before last night?"

"Because Tom has been asking me to sell my shares back to him. He wanted complete control before announcing Chloe publicly. He claimed it was part of a recapitalization. I checked the books and saw the first unexplained transfers." Her jaw hardened. "I did not know about the penthouse, but I knew he was hiding something."

The ownership structure aligned in my mind. The Ashford trust held thirty-six percent of Miller Dynamics through the original capital agreement. For years, I had allowed Tom to vote those shares by revocable proxy, giving him operational control. Tom personally held forty-nine percent. Eleanor held the remaining fifteen.

With her transfer and my revoked proxy, I would control fifty-one percent by breakfast.

"Once this files," I said, "there is no taking it back. Tom will call it betrayal."

"He brought his mistress into your home and spent company money on her. Betrayal has already been defined." Eleanor pushed a pen toward me. "Accept the shares."

I signed as trustee beneficiary and scanned the document to Mark's legal team. The upload bar reached one hundred percent.

Eleanor watched it disappear into the secure portal. "How quickly can you remove him?"

"Not until we preserve the evidence and stabilize the company. If he realizes he has lost control, he may empty the remaining accounts."

"Then let him believe he is winning."

The bluntness of her answer surprised me.

She took off her coat and sat opposite the desk. For the next twenty minutes, we listed the assets Tom might try to move: the art in the villa, his watch collection, three company vehicles, a brokerage account, and the cabin in Vermont held through a family partnership. Eleanor agreed to transfer her personal property into her own protected trust, not mine, and to provide the corporate auditors with every message Tom had sent about buying back her shares.

"I am not giving you my life," she said. "I am making sure he cannot steal the rest of mine."

"That is the right decision."

A fist struck the study door hard enough to shake the frame.

"Sarah!" Tom shouted. "Open this door."

Eleanor and I exchanged a look.

He hit it again. "I know my mother is in there. What are you two doing?"

Eleanor slipped the signed originals into the false bottom of my document case. I closed the spreadsheet and opened the divorce petition.

"Let him see what he expects," she murmured.

I unlocked the door.

Tom stood in the hallway with his sleeves rolled up and fury darkening his face. Chloe hovered behind him in my white bathrobe.

His gaze moved from Eleanor to me, then to the laptop.

"You have one hour," he said. "Sign the divorce papers, or I will have security remove you from this house."

Behind him, Chloe smiled.

Behind me, the secure phone vibrated once.

The message on its screen read: TRANSFER FILED. ASHFORD VOTING CONTROL: 51%.
