Chapter 1

The crystal glass shattered.

I didn't drop it. My fingers simply stopped working, like the signal between my brain and my hand had been severed clean.

The sound of breaking glass brought every head in the dining room swinging toward me — every head except my daughter Mia's, because she was still looking at her father with those wide, earnest seven-year-old eyes, waiting for an answer to the question that had just ripped the floor out from under my world.

"Daddy, since Sienna is having your baby, when is she moving in?"

I stood there. My husband, Kade Mercer, sat at the far end of the long dinner table, his knife still moving through his steak in smooth, practiced strokes. He hadn't flinched. He hadn't even looked up.

Because he thought I couldn't hear.

That was the thing about being married to a man for six years — he had learned, very precisely, the exact limits of what I could and couldn't perceive. I'd lost most of my hearing at twenty-three, a degenerative condition that had taken everything in gradual, cruel increments. Kade knew my aids had been sitting on the bathroom counter since this morning. He knew the dining room's ambient noise — the clinking cutlery, the low jazz from the speakers — would swallow Mia's small voice before it reached me.

He had calculated all of it.

What he hadn't calculated was that I'd been watching Mia's lips.

I always watched lips. It was survival.

My fingernails found my palms. I pressed them in slowly, deliberately, needing the pain to keep my face from doing something I couldn't take back. The sharp bite of it grounded me — four small half-moons of blood welling up against my lifeline — while my expression stayed exactly where I'd trained it to stay over six years of this marriage: composed, pleasant, blank.

A tragic mask. That's what it was. I'd worn it so long I sometimes forgot there was a face underneath.

Kade finally looked up from his plate. He looked at Mia first, something quick and warning flashing across his features, and then he looked at me. His dark eyes did a rapid assessment — my face, my posture, the broken glass on the floor — and he must have decided I hadn't understood, because his shoulders dropped half an inch in relief.

He reached across the table and began to sign.

Now I watched his hands shape those three words and felt my stomach turn over like something rotting.

Around him, his friends — the three couples he'd invited to this dinner I'd spent two days preparing — were watching. One of the men, Marcus, leaned toward his wife and said something behind his hand. I caught the shape of the words: *deaf and blind.*

His wife pressed her lips together to hold back a laugh.

Sienna's smile widened.

Kade signed again — *you look beautiful tonight* — and then turned back to his friends and said something that made the table erupt. I watched his mouth. I was always watching mouths.

"Pathetic," he said, still smiling, "but she's useful."

The laughter rolled around the table like a wave.

I set down my wine glass — carefully, this time, because I only had so much control left and I needed to spend it wisely — and I unfolded my napkin from my lap and placed it beside my plate.

Mia was looking at me now. She had her father's dark hair and my eyes, and in this moment those eyes were uncertain, sensing something she was too young to name.

"Mama?" she said. I read it off her lips.

I smiled at her. It cost me everything I had, but I smiled at her, and I touched her cheek once, gently, and then I pushed back my chair.

Kade glanced over. I saw him form my name — *Sloane* — but I was already moving, weaving between the chairs with the quiet, practiced efficiency of a woman who had learned not to make scenes. Not to cause disruption. Not to demand space she hadn't been given.

The dining room gave way to the hallway, and the hallway swallowed me whole.

The noise dropped away behind me. Without my aids, the world was a muffled, underwater thing — the jazz reduced to a low throb through the walls, the laughter gone entirely. Just my own breathing, ragged now that no one was watching. Just the sharp sting in my palms where my nails had broken skin.

*Useful.*

Six years. A daughter. A house I'd filled with every careful, quiet effort of a woman trying to be enough. And I was useful. A prop. A punchline in a room full of people who'd eaten the food I cooked and drunk the wine I'd chosen and laughed at the woman who couldn't hear them doing it.

The hallway blurred. I pressed one hand flat against the wall and kept walking, because if I stopped I would slide down onto the floor and I was not going to do that here. Not in this house. Not tonight.

I turned the corner into the dim stretch of corridor that led toward the foyer, moving faster than I should have, my vision swimming — and I walked straight into a wall.

Except it wasn't a wall.

It was a chest. Broad, solid, immovable as poured concrete, and it caught me with a steadiness that suggested it had caught things before.

Hands gripped my arms to keep me upright.

I looked up.

The man was tall — taller than Kade by several inches — with the kind of stillness about him that didn't come from calm so much as from absolute, controlled authority. Dark suit. Dark eyes darker still in the low corridor light. The scent of him hit me a half-second later: expensive wood smoke, something cool and sharp underneath it, and the faint ghost of a cigar.

He looked down at me with an expression that gave nothing away.

"Watch your step, little bird," he said.

I read it off his lips, and something about the way his mouth shaped the words — unhurried, almost amused, like a man who was never surprised by anything — sent a different kind of tremor through me.

I knew who he was. I'd seen his photograph in the business papers Kade left on the kitchen counter, always face-down when he noticed me looking. I'd heard Kade's voice go tight and careful whenever his name came up in conversation, the way it only went when Kade was genuinely afraid of something.

Ryker Vance. Kade's superior in the kind of hierarchy that didn't have a clean name. The man at the top of a structure Kade had spent six years trying to climb.

His hands were still on my arms. Steadying me.
