Chapter 5

The gravel of the garden path crunched beneath my brand-new designer heels, a sound that felt deafening in the silence of the estate. My grandfather had arranged this meeting, claiming I needed to "know" the man I was marrying in ten days, but my stomach was twisting into knots. I expected another Vincent. I expected an arrogant Alpha who would look at me and see a business merger, a bank account, or a broodmare.

I rounded the hedge of pristine white roses and stopped.

Declan Wagner wasn’t pacing impatiently or checking a gold watch. He was sitting on a stone bench, his elbows on his knees, looking at a small blue jay hopping near his shoe. He wore a simple grey sweater, not a power suit. When he heard me, he stood up. He was tall, with broad shoulders that didn't need padding to look impressive, but his eyes were the color of warm amber—gentle, not predatory.

"Riley," he said softly. He didn't bow, and he didn't try to intimidate me with an Alpha tone. He just held out a small paper napkin.

I hesitated, my guard instantly up. "What is this?"

"Peace offering," he smiled, a crooked expression that tugged at a memory I couldn't quite place.

I looked down. Sitting on the napkin was a cookie. It wasn't one of the delicate, tasteless macarons the estate chef made. It was a thick, lumpy chocolate chip cookie with slightly burnt edges.

"Camp Silverlake," he said quietly. "Summer of 2008. I was the scrawny kid with asthma who dropped his lunch tray on the first day. Everyone laughed. You didn't."

My breath caught in my throat. The memory washed over me like a tide. I remembered a boy with messy hair and terrified eyes. I had snuck into the kitchen that night and stolen him a cookie—this exact kind of cookie.

"You're that Declan?" I whispered.

"I never forgot," he said, taking a step closer but keeping a respectful distance. "You were kind to me when you had no reason to be. I know you're scared, Riley. I know this marriage feels like a cage. But I promise you, I'm not the enemy."

I took the cookie, my fingers brushing his. His skin was warm, grounding. For the first time in weeks, the tight band around my chest loosened just a fraction.

Two hours later, the warmth from the garden felt like a distant dream. We were in the mahogany-paneled study, surrounded by three lawyers who smelled like ink and greed. My grandfather sat at the head of the table, looking grim.

"Clause 4, Section B," the lead attorney droned. "All assets acquired prior to the union shall remain under the management of the Wagner Estate for the duration of the marriage to ensure stability..."

I stared at the polished wood of the table. It was happening again. Just like with Vincent, I was becoming a passenger in my own life. My newfound billions, my family name—it was all just leverage for men to trade.

"Stop," Declan’s voice cut through the room. It wasn't loud, but it had a steel core that made the lawyer snap his mouth shut.

Declan took the pen from the lawyer's hand and crossed out the entire paragraph with a sharp, violent scratch.

"Declan?" My grandfather frowned. "That is standard protocol."

"Not for my wife," Declan said firmly. He looked directly at me across the table. "Write this down instead: Riley Hamilton retains full, independent control of her inheritance. Furthermore, add an exit clause. If she is unhappy for any reason after one year, she can dissolve the marriage with no financial penalty. She walks away with everything she brought in, plus half of the joint appreciation."

The room went silent. The lawyers looked horrified.

"You're giving her a loaded gun pointed at your head, Mr. Wagner," the attorney sputtered.

"I'm giving her a key," Declan corrected. He didn't look at the lawyers; he held my gaze, his amber eyes fierce with sincerity. "I want a partner, Riley. Not a prisoner. If you stay, I want it to be because you choose to, not because a piece of paper forces you to."

My throat tightened, tears pricking my eyes. Vincent had tried to lock me out of my own apartment. Declan was handing me the deed to my freedom.

I picked up the pen. My hand wasn't shaking anymore.

"Suck it in, darling. Beauty is pain."

Elena, the stylist, yanked the laces of the corset tighter. I gasped, clutching the edge of the velvet ottoman in the dressing room. The wedding gown was a masterpiece of silk and lace, heavy with thousands of hand-sewn pearls, but it felt like armor.

"It's too tight," I wheezed.

"It's perfect," Elena insisted, adjusting the train.

I looked at myself in the tri-fold mirror. The woman staring back looked like a stranger. She was beautiful, yes—polished, expensive, royal. But beneath the makeup, I saw the baker who had scrubbed floors. I saw the girl who had been rejected in the rain.

Suddenly, a wave of heat surged from the base of my spine.

It wasn't the room temperature. It was internal, a molten gold sensation that flooded my veins. My heart hammered against my ribs, not in panic, but in a rhythm I had never felt before. *Thump-thump. Thump-thump.* Strong. Ancient.

*"Enough hiding,"* a voice echoed in my head. It wasn't my voice. It was deeper, smoother, echoing with the power of a thousand storms.

I gasped, my knees buckling.

"Ms. Hamilton?" Elena stepped back, her eyes widening.

The pain in my chest exploded into pure energy. My vision sharpened. I could see the individual dust motes dancing in the light. I could hear the heartbeat of the guard standing outside the door.

In the mirror, my reflection flickered. For a split second, my brown eyes flashed a brilliant, glowing silver.

*"I am here,"* the voice purred. *"I am Luna."*

My wolf. She was finally awake. And she wasn't the weak, dormant thing Vincent had mocked. She was massive. She was powerful.

Elena dropped the pincushion. She covered her nose and mouth, trembling. "The scent... oh my goddess."

The room didn't smell like hairspray and perfume anymore. It was flooded with a new aroma, heavy and intoxicating. It smelled like a summer storm breaking over a field of flowers. It smelled like fresh rain and crushed white lilies.

I stood up straight, the corset no longer feeling tight. My spine felt like it was made of steel. I looked at Elena, and for the first time, I didn't feel like an imposter in the expensive gown.

"Finish the fitting, Elena," I said. My voice was calm, but it carried a resonance that made the stylist instantly lower her head in submission.

"Yes, Omega," she whispered.

I looked back at the mirror. Riley the baker was gone. The Hamilton heiress had arrived.
