Chapter 3

The key turned easily in the front lock, but the house didn't feel like mine anymore.

I carried the blue medical folder beneath my arm as I walked up the hardwood stairs. When I reached the master bedroom, the door was wide open.

Inside the walk-in closet, metal hangers slid across the brass rod with a steady rhythm. Chloe stood in front of my wardrobe, holding a cream silk blouse against her chest to check the fit in the full-length mirror. Two open cardboard boxes sat near her feet, and on the bench beside the king-sized bed rested a set of lavender luggage.

Right next to it, still draped over the back of an armchair, was the black wool suit I had worn to my mother’s funeral yesterday.

Chloe turned when she heard my footsteps. She didn't flinch. Instead, she offered a soft, rehearsed smile.

"Nora, you're back," she said, setting the silk blouse on the island counter. "I was just sorting through some of the racks to clear out space. A lot of these pieces are dry-clean only, and I thought it would be easier to pack them for you ahead of time."

Ethan stepped out from the en-suite bathroom holding a glass of warm water. He stopped when he saw me standing in the doorway, his eyes darting toward the folder in my hand before settling on my face.

"You should have called before coming over," Ethan said, handing the glass to Chloe. "Chloe needs rest. The doctor told us yesterday that the first trimester is fragile, and the stress at the chapel wasn't good for the baby. She needs a stable, comfortable environment, so it makes sense for her to stay here where I can look after her."

"You moved her into our bedroom less than twenty-four hours after Eleanor was buried," I said, my voice steady and cold.

"Don't start an argument, Nora," Ethan replied, stepping in front of Chloe with an instinctive, protective edge. "It’s practical. She can't stay in that walk-up apartment in her condition, and this house has the space. We’re just trying to handle things without unnecessary drama."

Chloe stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on Ethan’s forearm. She looked at me with wide, apologetic eyes.

"Nora, please don't be upset with Ethan," Chloe said softly. "I told him I could stay in a hotel, but he was worried about my morning sickness. I really don't expect you to move out this second. You can take a few days to gather your things. I just hope we can keep the atmosphere calm. The baby shouldn't have to absorb all this hostility."

I looked at the open luggage, then at the maternity dress I had tailored with my own hands, and finally at my husband.

I didn't yell. I didn't throw her clothes onto the floor.

I turned around, walked down the hallway, and headed into the dining room. I dropped the thick blue folder directly in the center of the dark glass table. The heavy thump echoed across the open space.

Ethan followed me down, frowning with visible irritation. "What is that?"

"Sit down and find it for me, Ethan," I said, leaning both hands against the edge of the table. "Show me the page where Dr. Albright diagnosed me as infertile."

Ethan stopped by the head of the table. He glanced down at the blue cardboard cover, his jaw tightening, but he didn't reach out to touch it.

"I don't need to read old clinic notes," he said dismissively. "We spent three years running from specialist to specialist, and you never got pregnant. Chloe is pregnant right now. That is a living reality. A child on the way is far more convincing than five-year-old lab sheets you dug out of Eleanor's attic."

"You never submitted your semen analysis to Dr. Albright," I said, staring directly into his eyes. "You went for the intake appointment, and when they asked for your urology profile and full testing, you blocked the records and stopped answering their calls."

A flicker of tension crossed Ethan's expression, so sharp and sudden that his shoulders went rigid.

"I called Dr. Albright yesterday," I continued, taking a step closer. "He confirmed that my reproductive panel was completely normal. There was never an issue with my body. You let your mother spend nearly five years calling me defective at Thanksgiving dinners. You let my father believe I was a failed wife who couldn't carry a child. You let everyone believe the flaw was mine."

Ethan’s chest rose and fell sharply. "Nora, you're obsessing over ancient history to distract from what’s happening today. Chloe is having my baby. The marriage is over."

"Then show me your lab work," I demanded. "If that child is yours, pull up your medical portal right now and show me the clean bill of health you claimed you received before our wedding. Prove to me where that baby came from."

Chloe appeared at the bottom of the staircase, lingering near the archway with a troubled expression. "Ethan? What's going on?"

"I am not signing that separation agreement," I said clearly, loud enough for both of them to hear. "I will not put my name on a document that blames the failure of this marriage on my fertility. And I will never stand before the public or your family to validate a pregnancy when you can't even produce a single medical report to back it up."

The color drained from Ethan’s face.

He didn't yell. He didn't offer a biting remark. The arrogance that had carried him through my mother's funeral vanished, replaced by a raw, unvarnished panic that made his hands tremble at his sides.

He spun toward the archway. "Chloe, go downstairs. Wait for me in the courtyard."

Chloe blinked, taken aback. "Ethan, I can stay and help you explain—"

"I said get out!" Ethan snapped, his voice cracking with a sudden, violent urgency. "Go to the courtyard and don't come back up until I tell you to."

Chloe shrank back, shocked by his harsh tone. She looked between the two of us, grabbed her phone from the console table, and quickly hurried down the lower steps toward the courtyard exit. The heavy front door clicked shut behind her.

The silence in the dining room became absolute.

Ethan turned back to me. He dragged a hand across his forehead, wiping away a thin film of sweat. When he spoke again, his voice was hushed, stripped of all superiority.

"Nora, listen to me," he said, stepping around the table. "We don't need to make this a legal war. If you want more from the settlement, we can adjust the terms. I’ll give you the downtown condo outright. You can take the full balance of the joint savings, plus another two million from my private holding account. You won't have to work another day in your life."

I stared at him, watching the desperate calculations running behind his eyes.

"And if you're worried about your reputation," Ethan rushed on, lowering his tone further, "we can release a neutral joint statement. We'll say Eleanor's passing made you realize you wanted a different path in life. You're grieving, you're overwhelmed, and you're not in the right state of mind to handle a contentious divorce. We can protect both of our names."

"You're offering me millions of dollars and handing over the condo without a fight," I said quietly.

Ethan swallowed hard, waiting for my answer.

"Five years of marriage, and you never gave me an extra penny without making me account for the budget," I said. "Now you're willing to strip your own accounts bare just to keep me quiet. Why would you give away half your fortune instead of simply proving you're the child's father?"

Ethan froze.

The seconds dragged on. The hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen sounded deafening in the empty space between us.

He looked at me, then glanced toward the hallway to ensure no one was within earshot. He walked over to the entrance of the study, pulled the heavy oak door shut, and turned the deadbolt with a solid, metallic click.

When he turned back around, all the fight had left his posture. His face looked hollow, gray, and defeated.

"Because that child was never mine to begin with," Ethan said, his voice barely a rasp. "Nora, I was infertile before I ever married you."
