Chapter 1

At my mother’s funeral, the memorial slideshow suddenly disappeared.

In its place was my sister’s ultrasound.

Then my husband walked across the chapel, put his hand on her stomach, and announced that after five years with a “barren wife,” he was finally going to be a father.

My father told me to step aside.

My in-laws thanked my sister for giving their family an heir.

And my husband handed me divorce papers beside my mother’s coffin.

They expected me to sign.

Instead, I opened the medical records they had spent years making sure I never questioned.

I was never infertile.

My husband was.

He had known since before our wedding.

Which meant the baby he was proudly claiming could never be his.

And when I started asking who the real father was, my father-in-law offered me ten million dollars to stop looking.

That was when I realized my sister hadn’t just stolen my husband.

She had walked into a family hiding a much uglier secret.

***

The memorial hall smelled of white lilies and melting candle wax.

I stood by the podium beside my mother’s portrait, clutching the remote control that connected to the projector. Today was supposed to be about her. After months of watching cancer hollow out her body, I had gathered five decades of her life into a quiet slideshow: her college graduation, her wedding day, the afternoons she taught me how to sew.

I pressed the button to start the presentation.

The large screen behind the altar flickered, but the image that appeared wasn't my mother in her twenties.

It was a black-and-white sonogram.

A small, curved fetus rested in the center of the frame, accompanied by clear medical text: *Gestation: 10 Weeks. Patient: Chloe Vance.*

A murmur rippled through the pews. I stared at the screen, my thumb frozen over the plastic remote. Before I could find the cord to pull it from the socket, my husband, Ethan, stepped out from the front row.

He didn't look at me. He walked straight toward Chloe, who was seated in the front pew.

Ethan placed his hand over Chloe’s stomach, his wedding band catching the dim light of the chandeliers. He turned to face the gathered guests, his expression filled with pride.

"Thank you all for being here," Ethan announced, his voice carrying over the quiet room. "I know this is a solemn day, but we wanted to share something my mother-in-law would have rejoiced in. Our family is finally having a baby."

The words felt like ice water dumped over my head.

I looked at Chloe. She was wearing the black tailored dress I had spent three nights altering for her. Just five days ago, she had come to my studio complaining that her waist felt unusually thick and begged me to let out the seams so she wouldn't look bloated at the funeral. I had stayed up until two in the morning adjusting the fabric with my own hands.

I had tailored a maternity dress for my husband's mistress.

Against the high collar of the black dress hung an emerald pendant. It was vibrant, luxurious, and completely out of place in a room meant for mourning. It was the pendant Chloe had shown off a few days earlier, saying it was a gift from a man who truly knew how to spend money on her.

"Oh, thank God!"

My mother-in-law, Catherine, was the first to react. Tears welled in her eyes as she rushed forward, grabbing Chloe’s hands and pressing them between her own. "A baby... after all these years, an heir! Chloe, sweetheart, thank you. You don't know what this means to us."

My father-in-law, Victor, was right behind her. Without glancing once at my mother’s portrait or at me, he pulled out a padded armchair from the front row and carefully guided Chloe into it.

"Sit down, don't stand on those heels," Victor said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it. "You have to be careful during the first trimester."

Not a single member of my husband's family looked at me. I stood frozen beside the framed photograph of my dead mother, completely invisible in my own grief.

The guests whispered among themselves, some glancing between me and the couple with thinly veiled curiosity, while others openly nodded in approval at the news of an heir.

I walked down the steps of the platform, the remote shaking in my grip. I stopped directly in front of Ethan.

"What is this?" I asked, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady. "Ethan, what are you doing?"

Ethan looked down at me. His brow furrowed with mild annoyance, and he leaned in, keeping his voice low enough that only the front row could hear.

"Keep your voice down, Nora," he said, his tone clipped and warning. "Today is your mother’s memorial. Don't make a scene and make things ugly."

"You put a sonogram on her memorial screen," I said, the fury rising in my throat until it choked me. "You're holding another woman's stomach while my mother is in a casket, and you're telling me not to make things ugly?"

"Ethan didn't do it to hurt you, Nora," Chloe spoke up from the chair. She adjusted the emerald pendant around her neck, looking up at me with wide, innocent eyes. "We just thought Aunt Eleanor would want to know before she was laid to rest. She always worried about the family line."

"Don't speak her name," I snapped.

"That's enough, Nora."

The deep voice came from behind me. I turned, expecting my father, Richard, to step in. I thought he would finally show some dignity for the woman who had shared thirty years of his life.

Instead, Richard walked straight past me and stood on the other side of Chloe's chair. He placed a steady, protective hand on her shoulder.

"Dad?" I whispered.

Richard looked around the room, clearing his throat to address the guests. "Since everyone is here, there is another truth that should be spoken today. Chloe is not just Eleanor's niece. She is my biological daughter."

A collective gasp swept through the mourners.

"Eleanor knew about it before she passed," Richard lied smoothly, his eyes cold as he looked at me. "She gave her blessing. And now that Ethan and Chloe have found real love, and Chloe is carrying his child, it's time to put an end to what was never meant to be."

He turned his gaze fully onto me. "Nora, you couldn't give Ethan a child in nearly five years of marriage. Since they love each other and she's pregnant, just step aside and let them be together. Do it for the family."

The air left my lungs.

They were all standing together—my husband, my father, my in-laws, and the woman who had lived under our roof as my cousin. It wasn't an accidental revelation. It was an ambush. They had calculated the timing, the venue, and the audience, knowing that the public setting of a memorial service would corner me into silence.

Chloe opened her designer handbag and pulled out a crisp, white folder. She held it out toward me.

"We prepared this so everyone can move on peacefully," Chloe said softly. "It's an amicable separation agreement. If you sign it now, in front of Aunt Eleanor, it will show that you truly respect her memory. You can acknowledge that your marriage broke down years ago because of your fertility problems. That way, nobody looks bad."

"You want me to sign divorce papers at my mother's funeral?" I asked, looking at the black pen she offered.

"It's the cleanest way," Ethan said, not an ounce of remorse on his face. "Sign it, Nora. Let's finish this today."

Behind me, the sonogram image was still glaring brightly across the memorial hall, casting a pale, sterile glow over my mother’s flowers.

"Turn that off," I demanded, looking toward the audio-visual booth. "Turn it off and put my mother's pictures back on."

The technician looked confused, hesitating as he glanced at my father.

Before Richard could give an order, a tall figure moved from the shadow of the back aisle. Julian, an old business partner and lifelong friend of my mother's, stepped up toward the technician's booth. He didn't raise his voice or cause a disruption. He simply leaned over the desk, spoke a single quiet sentence to the young man, and pressed the master switch himself.

The screen went black.

Julian turned, his sharp, dark eyes meeting mine across the room. He didn't speak over me or try to take over my fight; he merely stood by the wall, an immovable presence that forced the room into sudden, uncomfortable silence.

I took the folder from Chloe's manicured hands.

My fingers turned the first two pages. The text was legally sound, cleanly typed, and thoroughly thought out. But when my eyes reached the final paragraph on the third page, my blood ran cold.

The clause stated clearly: *The undersigned acknowledges that the marriage between Nora and Ethan ended in fact over a year ago due to irreconcilable differences, and that Ethan’s relationship with Chloe began only after Nora voluntarily withdrew from the marriage.*

They didn't just want my husband and my inheritance. They wanted me to sign a legal confession absolving them of betrayal, labeling myself as the barren, discarded wife who had handed them her blessing.
