Chapter 2

I wasn't sure if it was because the third floor wasn't high enough, but I didn't feel much pain when I landed on the ground.

Meanwhile, horrified shrieks erupted around me.

"Are you okay, Finn?"

The voice sounded like Mom's.

I opened my eyes and was about to tell her that my name wasn't Finn when I realized that I was lying on someone.

It was Finn, my brother who had just said that he wouldn't acknowledge me as his sister just moments ago.

I felt a little awkward. I hadn't expected to land on him. I hastily got off him, but I lost my balance and accidentally fell on him again.

The color drained from Finn's face. He looked like he was seconds away from vomiting blood.

I trembled in fear as I took in his pained expression. His eyes were burning with fury.

However, after briefly mulling over my thoughts, I realized that the Emersons couldn't do anything to me. At most, they could threaten to kill me, but I was already tired of living anyway.

Mom looked at Finn with an anguished expression. She then turned to glare at me, snapping, "How dare you cause so much trouble? It's only your first day here!"

I pursed my lips, feeling a little disgruntled because Quinn was the one who threatened to jump from the balcony in the first place.

Why didn't Mom scold Quinn for pretending to jump from the balcony? Why did she berate me and call me troublesome when I genuinely wanted to die?

As expected, everyone played favorites. No one in the world truly loved me.

Tears spilled down my face.

Mom was just about to scold me for being dramatic when Winnie's warning about misfortune befalling the people around me whenever I tried to take my own life suddenly flashed through her mind.

She shook her head, convincing herself that Winnie was just spouting nonsense.

As the head of the family, Dad also convinced himself that it was just a coincidence that Finn got hurt.

"Being a crybaby is unbefitting of a daughter of the Emerson family, Charlotte Griffin," he said. "Forget it. We'll deal with you later. We need to rush Finn to the hospital for now."

Mom and Dad brought Finn and Quinn, who stumbled down the stairs, to the hospital.

Quinn had gotten a scrape on her foot when I shoved her aside earlier.

None of them cared that I had just jumped from the third floor.

Winnie was the only one who showed me any concern. She grabbed the first-aid kit and tended to my swollen and bruised ankle.

"Don't take their words to heart, Ms. Griffin. Mr. and Mrs. Emerson just haven't gotten used to the fact that you'll be around from now on. I'm certain that they actually do love you!"

I just continued to sit there in a daze, swaying my feet back and forth until Mom and Dad returned.

They only recalled that they hadn't decided on which room I was going to move into yet when they saw me sitting on the couch.

Dad looked exhausted as he massaged his brow. He pointed at the guest room in the corner and said, "Finn suffered multiple broken bones because of you. He needs to be monitored, so he'll be hospitalized for now. We haven't prepared a room for you yet, so you can stay there for now."
