Grandma's Ultimate Sacrifice Novel Cover

Grandma's Ultimate Sacrifice

After Thanksgiving, Grandma insisted I take a herbal remedy. Her voice was filled with fear as she said, "The holiday's over, and it's coming back. Once you've taken the remedy, scales will appear on your body when it shows up." Back in the city, my boyfriend Kendrick couldn't wait to get close. The moment he hugged me, an unbearable itch spread across my back. I reached around to scratch and felt several hard scales. The cold, slimy sensation sent a shiver down my spine, like an electric shock. Kendrick teased, "How come you're so sensitive after just one holiday?" I couldn’t believe it and ran my fingers over the spot several times, only to confirm it wasn't an illusion. Beneath those scales, it felt as if countless tiny bugs were sucking and wriggling. The deep, relentless itch made my nails dig painfully into my skin. At the same time, an uncontrollable chill crept through my body.

The pack gathering hall buzzed with activity as I slipped through the side entrance, hoping to avoid the main crowd. My fingers traced the simple silver pendant at my neck—my father's gift before he fell into coma—as I took my usual seat among the elders. Not the Luna's place beside the Alpha. Never that. "Valentina." Elder Marissa nodded respectfully, the only one who still acknowledged me as Luna despite Lorenzo's blatant rejection. "The Moon Goddess blesses you," I murmured, taking my seat on the hard wooden bench. The elders' section was deliberately placed in the shadows of the grand hall, away from the ornate Alpha platform where Lorenzo would soon appear. The double doors swung open, and the pack members filed in, their excited chatter filling the space. I kept my eyes downcast, focusing on the polished stone floor rather than the pitying glances thrown my way. Three years of rejection had taught me to make myself invisible when possible.

The great hall smelled like blood and candle wax. Killian stood at the head of the room with his shirt still torn at the shoulder, a bandage wrapped around his forearm from the ambush. The wound was already healing — Alpha metabolism, nothing serious. But he wore it like a prop. Like a man who understood the value of looking like he had survived something. I stood in the third row. Luna of Ironveil Pack. His mate. I could feel the bond right then, warm and insistent in the center of my chest, the way it always was when he was close. Seven years of that warmth.

My hands trembled as I finished healing the last warrior, my energy nearly depleted after eighteen consecutive sessions. Sweat beaded on my forehead, and my wolf, Lyra, whimpered with exhaustion inside me. *Just one more, Victoria. Then we can rest.* I nodded, both to myself and to Lyra, as I placed my palms over the deep gash on Delta Carter's shoulder. The familiar warm glow emanated from my fingertips, sealing the wound until only a faint pink line remained where the rogue's claws had torn through flesh. "There," I whispered, my voice hoarse. "You're all set, Carter. Take it easy for the next day or so." The young Delta nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Dr. Hayes.

To an orphan like me, the Donovans’ approval was oxygen. I thought I was living a fairy tale as Ivan’s fiancée, finally finding a place to land. That illusion shattered the night I overheard my future father-in-law whisper behind a study door. "We can't keep paying Kayla forever. If this comes out, it ruins the merger." The name hung in the air like toxic smoke. Driven by a sickening gut feeling, I dug deeper. I found a tuition bill for a prestigious kindergarten for a boy named Leo—paid for by the Donovans. I disguised myself as a pest control worker and infiltrated the address on the bill. Inside the playroom of a massive mansion, I found the smoking gun. It wasn’t a receipt. It was a commissioned oil painting. It depicted my fiancé, Ivan, smiling with his arm around a beautiful woman, a young boy standing between them. The plaque read: *Our Happy Family - 2023.* They weren't just cheating; they were living a parallel life. They thought I was just the naive, grateful scholarship student who would never look too closely. They were wrong. At our lavish fifth-anniversary party, in front of five hundred of Manhattan's elite, Ivan waited for my loving toast. Instead, I signaled the AV booth. The giant screen behind us flickered to life. But it didn't show our wedding photos. It showed the painting. And then, I played the recordings.

The familiar scent of pine and wildflowers should have welcomed me home. Instead, it felt like walking into a stranger's territory. My boots echoed against the marble floors of the Crescent Creek Pack house as I dragged my duffel bag behind me. Five years. Five years of fighting rogues at the Northern Borders, of nearly dying more times than I could count, of dreaming about this moment. "Carter will be so proud," I whispered to myself, touching my father's ring for courage. The silver band felt cool against my skin, a reminder of the legacy I was meant to uphold. I'd sent no warning of my return. No calls, no messages. I wanted to see his face light up when he saw me—the woman who'd proven herself worthy of being his Luna.
