Chapter 2

Arielle Fischer's POV

Hospital food was bland and tasteless, like a bowl of unappetizing mush. After weeks of it, weakness and exhaustion had pushed me to the brink.

That day, Jason walked in carrying a picnic basket. The aroma hit me, and my empty stomach growled.

"Look what I brought!" he announced cheerfully, setting the basket on my nightstand. "Your favorite! Kelly helped me make it."

Despite my hunger, my stomach immediately rebelled. Kelly. Always Kelly. The moment her name left his lips, the enticing aroma turned nauseating. I felt sick — not from hunger, but from disgust.

"Kelly? The Kelly who doesn't take my peanut allergy seriously?"

Jason's smile froze. "Oh, Arielle, don't be like that. She feels terrible. She just wanted to do something nice for you."

The scent drifted over — roasted chicken, aromatic herbs. It did smell good, but beneath it all, I could smell betrayal.

"No, thanks," I said, pushing my hospital tray aside. "I'm not hungry."

Jason looked genuinely hurt. "But it's your favorite roast chicken! The one you taught me to make, remember? That special marinade."

I gave a bitter laugh. "Of course I remember. I taught you every step. From picking the freshest herbs to balancing the spices so the skin comes out crispy and fragrant. I spent hours teaching you how to debone it properly, how to truss it."

"Are you trying to tell me Kelly somehow mastered my unique techniques out of nowhere?"

Jason shifted uncomfortably. He avoided my gaze. "Well, she tried, really tried. She watched me do it, chopped some things. But... I did most of it in the end. She almost cut herself during the deboning." He gave a dry laugh. "But it's the thought that counts, right? She really wanted to make you happy."

"So you're saying Kelly, who can barely be bothered to open a jam jar, genuinely wanted to learn how to replicate my signature dish?" I pressed.

He sighed, his patience wearing thin. "Arielle, what does it matter? It's just a chicken. Why do you have to be so difficult?" His tone was dismissive, completely indifferent to what I was going through.

Anger and exhaustion left me too weak to argue. Tentatively, I picked up my fork. The chicken was still warm, wrapped in foil, and it smelled wonderful.

As I ate, Jason rambled on about Kelly's kitchen disasters. "You should've seen her, Arielle! She almost set the kitchen on fire trying to sauté the herbs. And she kept complaining the chicken was 'too raw' when I'd barely seared it. It was hilarious." He laughed — that easy, carefree laugh I hadn't heard in weeks. The way he described Kelly's clumsiness with such fondness made my chest ache.

He seemed genuinely amused by her mistakes, but he'd never laughed like that when I messed up. I felt more and more like an outsider.

Every bite of perfectly cooked chicken — the dish I'd taught him myself — became a symbol of his betrayal. Food that was meant to comfort me was now impossible to swallow.

Just then, my phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number — a video. I opened it and trembled with rage.

The video was shot in Jason's kitchen. Kelly, her hair casually tied up, was holding a camera, filming Jason wrestling with the chicken. Her voice came through, dripping with sarcasm.

"Aww, look at Jason, playing chef for his 'sickly' fiancée. How domestic! You know, she's always saying no to this and no to that with food — so high-maintenance, it's unbearable. Can't she just eat normal food like the rest of us?" She laughed shrilly, and on camera, she poured some peanut oil onto the plate, then winked at the lens.

My spoon clattered against the plate. My hands were shaking, and I nearly dropped my phone.

"Jason!" My voice was hoarse and trembling, full of anger and disbelief. "What is this?" I held the phone up to him. The video was still playing, Kelly's smug, vicious face filling the screen.

He watched the video, and the color drained from his face. "That... that can't be... Kelly wouldn't..." he stammered. Then his expression shifted, a flash of anger crossing his features. "Who sent you this? This is an invasion of privacy! It's slander!" He tried to grab my phone — clearly more concerned about Kelly's image than my safety.

"Slander?" I repeated, my voice rising. "Isn't what she did obvious enough?" I pushed the plate away. The thought of taking another bite made me sick.

Jason slammed his fist on the nightstand. "God, Arielle! You always blow everything out of proportion, it's exhausting! Can't you just let it go? Kelly made a mistake! She apologized! Why do you always have to make everything so complicated? You're impossible to please!"

Those words hurt more than any physical blow. I was the victim, yet somehow I was the one who was always in the wrong.
