From Rejected Mate to Alpha's Bane
Chapter 1
The grand hall of Sterling Pack house glowed with amber light from dozens of candles. After ten long years, the moment I'd dreamed of had finally arrived. Jackson stood before me, his jet-black hair swept back, golden eyes fixed on mine with an intensity that made my heart race. The private marking ceremony we'd arranged felt intimate, perfect—just the two of us in this sacred space.
"Natalie," Jackson's voice carried that familiar authoritative timbre that had first drawn me to him when he was nothing but a determined rogue wolf. "Today, I make you officially mine."
I trembled as he approached, his fingers gently brushing my hair away from my neck. Inside me, Lyra, my silver wolf, paced with anticipation. For a decade, we'd waited for this moment—supported him, built his pack, sacrificed everything.
"It's time," he whispered against my skin.
His teeth sank into the sensitive curve where my neck met my shoulder. The pain was sharp, electric, but quickly transformed into a warm, pulsing sensation that spread throughout my body. Lyra howled in triumph within me, her joy cascading through my consciousness.
*Finally, we belong,* she whispered in my mind. *We are Luna.*
Jackson pulled back, his eyes flashing with something I couldn't quite read as he examined his mark. Blood trickled down my collarbone, and he wiped it away with his thumb.
"Perfect," he murmured, pressing his forehead against mine. "Rest now. We'll announce it to the pack tomorrow."
I nodded, still dizzy from the bonding rush. As he escorted me back to our quarters, I couldn't help but touch the fresh mark, feeling the slight ridge of the bite beneath my fingertips. After years of touching that same spot, wishing for his mark, it was finally there.
That night, I couldn't sleep. The mark throbbed pleasantly, and Lyra's contentment radiated through me. I decided to slip into the pack mind-link, something I rarely did at night. I wanted to feel connected to everyone, to experience the subtle shift in how they'd perceive me once they knew I was officially their Luna.
I closed my eyes, relaxing my mind as I reached for the familiar thread of consciousness that bound our pack together.
The images hit me like a physical blow.
Jackson, dressed in ceremonial robes of deep burgundy and gold, standing tall and proud. But not in our territory—in the ornate marble halls of the Royal Lycan Court. And beside him...
Victoria Ashford. The Lycan Princess. Her white-gold hair cascaded down her back, her perfect face tilted up toward Jackson with adoration I knew was calculated. They stood before the Lycan King's throne, hands clasped.
"I, Jackson Sterling, Alpha of the Sterling Pack, take you, Victoria Ashford, daughter of the Lycan King, as my true mate and Luna..."
His voice echoed through the mind-link, clear and strong—so different from the hushed, almost hurried way he'd spoken to me just hours before.
I jerked upright in bed, gasping for air. Lyra howled in confused agony.
*No, no, no! He marked us! We are his Luna!*
But the images continued to flood in. The lavish ceremony. The hundreds of witnesses. The Lycan King's approving nod. This wasn't some nightmare—this was happening right now.
The mark on my neck burned, no longer with the warmth of bonding but with the searing pain of betrayal. Ten years. Ten years of loyalty, of sacrifice, of loving him through everything. And all along, he'd been planning this?
I stumbled from the bed, my legs barely supporting me as rage and heartbreak warred within my chest. Without conscious thought, I found myself throwing clothes into a bag, movements mechanical while my mind splintered.
"The Royal Lycan Court," I whispered to myself. "He's at the Royal Lycan Court."
Lyra snarled within me, her pain transforming into something dangerous. *We go now. We show them what happens when you betray a true Luna.*
I nodded, my vision blurring with tears that I refused to shed. Not yet. Not until I looked him in the eyes and made him face what he'd done.
I slipped out of the Sterling Pack house, the home I'd helped build, and headed toward the one place I never thought I'd go—to confront the mate who had marked me as his own only hours before declaring another woman his true Luna before the entire werewolf kingdom.
