Chapter 2

A sharp authority rang through Shawn's voice, and the tone made resistance feel pointless.

Vanessa came to a complete standstill.

A trace of a smile touched Shawn's lips, but his eyes stayed cold and unreadable.

"If you leave this office now, your parents will rot in prison for the rest of their lives," he said calmly. "There will be no second chance for them to turn things around."

Those words sparked a fragile glimmer of hope deep in Vanessa's chest.

Driven by that flicker, Vanessa moved back toward the desk in a daze, and her legs failed her before she could steady herself, sending her collapsing onto the sofa beside it.

Her gaze lifted to the man in the perfectly tailored suit, who radiated confidence and control, and for a brief moment, his features blended with the memory of the thin, stubborn boy she once knew.

Reality quickly reasserted itself, and she understood that everything between them had shifted.

With restless fingers, Vanessa tugged at the edge of her clothing. Back then, she had been the one who approached him first, and she had also been the one who shattered their promise of a future together.

No matter how she tried to justify it, the betrayal had come from her.

Years had reshaped every part of their lives.

Once admired and proud, the Owen family's heiress now stood cast aside and forgotten.

And the once powerless boy who had suffered endless humiliation now stood as someone who could determine the future of her entire family.

A hollow, bitter laugh slipped from Vanessa. Was this the kind of twisted destiny people warned about?

From a drawer, Shawn retrieved a document and slid it across the desk toward her, and every line on the page looked deliberate and exact.

"These figures cover the preliminary costs," he said evenly. "They include gathering evidence, pulling connections, and my legal fees."

Unsteady fingers lifted the paper as Vanessa scanned the numbers. The endless trail of zeros sent her vision spinning.

What used to be nothing more than pocket money in her past life had turned into a sum she could not even begin to afford.

Across from her, Shawn observed her drained expression without a hint of urgency, and there was a quiet satisfaction in his calm.

At his own pace, he took off his glasses and wiped them carefully with a velvet cloth. Without the lenses, his gaze appeared even sharper and more penetrating.

"Miss Owen, have you worked out a way to cover this?" he asked coldly. "This does not come cheap."

Dryness tightened around Vanessa's throat, and no words would come.

After placing the document back on the desk, she lifted her head and met his unyielding stare.

She understood, deep down, that money had never been his true objective.

What Shawn wanted had nothing to do with cash from the very beginning.

After shutting her eyes for a brief moment, Vanessa opened them again, and the emptiness in her gaze was impossible to miss.

"What is it that you want?" she asked quietly.

Suddenly, Shawn stopped cleaning his glasses.

Once he slid them back into place, he rose to his feet and moved toward her.

His height alone swallowed her in shadow as he closed the distance.

Bending down, he reached out and lifted her chin with cool fingers, leaving her no choice but to face him.

Up close, Vanessa caught the sharp, woodsy scent clinging to him, and she saw the raw, possessive hatred he made no effort to hide.

Near her ear, his breath brushed her skin, and his voice dropped into a low, dangerous whisper.

"What do I want?" Shawn said with a quiet sneer. "You should be asking what you can give."

Tension coiled through Vanessa as she tightened her fists and forced herself to speak past her wounded pride. "Whatever I have belongs to you."

"I want you," Shawn answered with careless ease.

Shock rippled through Vanessa, and her pupils shrank in an instant.

Satisfaction flickered across Shawn's face, and a cruel curve formed at the corner of his mouth.

"Starting tonight, you will come whenever I call for you," he said flatly. "Until…"

He stopped on purpose, and his thumb brushed slowly across her lips, which had gone cold. "Until I lose interest in you."

Humiliation surged through Vanessa and left her shaking from head to toe. She pushed him away and struggled upright on unsteady legs.

"Shawn, don't you dare!" she shouted. Her eyes burned with anger and shame while her voice shook violently. "I would rather rot in prison than let you degrade me like this!"

Without another glance behind her, Vanessa spun around and rushed toward the exit.

Rather than stop her, Shawn stayed where he was and straightened the tie she had messed up. His cold voice followed her calmly. "Are you really willing to let your parents be abandoned like that?"

Just before her hand could reach the door, Vanessa came to a sudden halt.

That final step felt like the line dividing salvation from damnation.

Mockery laced Shawn's tone as he spoke again. "Vanessa, take a moment and think carefully. Do you want them to waste away and die behind bars, or would you rather see them walk free and spend their remaining years in peace? The decision rests entirely with you."
