From a Trip to a Toy
Chapter 3
Hearing Vincent's words, I felt my blood run cold instantly. He had chosen to side with Lisa and Katie.
My colleagues, who had been watching from the sidelines, immediately switched sides after hearing what he said.
"Mr. Cosby has already spoken. I bet Harriet's lying."
"Exactly. Harriet's a senior here. Does she really have to take the grand prize from an intern? If she can't handle losing, she shouldn't participate."
"All for 50 thousand dollars? She's got no shame at all."
My colleagues' accusations cut right through me.
I fixed my gaze on Vincent, my voice cold. "Vincent, look me in the eye and tell me the truth. Do you really not know what's going on? Can you honestly say you didn't have Lisa rig the grand prize for Katie?"
Vincent's eyes flickered. "Harriet, stop being unreasonable!"
As soon as he said that, Katie's eyes immediately reddened. Her voice quivered, on the verge of breaking.
"Harriet, I know you're upset, but I really want to go abroad and see what it's like out there. I come from a poor family, and I've only left the city a few times in my life.
"Now that I finally have the chance, please don't make this hard for me and let me go," Katie begged, tears spilling down her cheeks. Her shoulders shook slightly, as if she had been wronged.
Lisa immediately stepped forward, gently patting Katie's back and rolling her eyes at me.
"Harriet, if it's not yours, don't take it. Katie comes from a poor family, but she works hard. She's a lovely young woman.
"I'm not the only one who feels for her. Mr. Cosby's always looked out for her as well! Now that he's standing up for her today, you're not getting what you want!"
At her words, everyone looked at Katie and Vincent differently.
"Lisa is Katie's best friend. She must know something."
"No wonder Katie wears luxury items all the time. So…"
"Looks like she's going to be our boss' wife soon."
Whispers spread through the crowd. Katie's face grew even redder, but she didn't deny it. Instead, she looked at Vincent quietly, as if he were the only person she could rely on.
Watching everything unfold before me, I couldn't help but laugh at myself. Over the past year, I had stood by Vincent's side as he went through all the hardships of building his company.
I even used my own resources to pave the way for him, but all I got in return was betrayal and lies.
I stopped laughing, my gaze instantly turning cold. I ripped my work badge off my chest and tossed it aside carelessly.
"Fine. I won't take it. You can have the grand prize. Also, I quit."
I always knew when to hold on and when to walk away. It wasn't too late to cut my losses now.
Vincent's expression shifted. He immediately stepped forward and got in my way.
"Harriet, no one said you're getting fired. You don't have to leave. You're a senior here. No one's going to mind."
I walked around him and let out a mocking laugh.
"But you're a hypocrite, and I can't stand this place."
With that, I turned and left.
Vincent was about to say more, but Katie held him back. "Mr. Cosby, I'm so happy. I finally get to go abroad and see the world. I didn't realize you still remembered that I liked Marosa…"
In the end, Vincent didn't go after me.
After leaving the office, I immediately dialed my grandfather's number.
"Hey, Harriet. How have you been lately? Did you miss me?"
Hearing Grandpa's voice on the other end, my nose stung. He never supported my relationship with Vincent as he couldn't bear to see me suffer.
But I stood my ground and even pestered Grandpa into giving Vincent resources. I never expected he would turn out to be so ungrateful.
I wiped my tears away and took a deep breath.
"Grandpa, I've thought it through. I'm done going through hardships with Vincent. I want to take back everything I gave him. I want him to lose everything!"
