Chapter 7

My entrance, or rather, my mere presence, caused a ripple in the perfectly choreographed scene. Heads turned, whispers started, and suddenly, all eyes were on me. Jace, still on one knee, paused mid-proposal, his face tightening with annoyance, then a slow, dawning horror.

He stood up, his face ashen, the romantic glow instantly extinguished. Katherine, her smile still wide, saw me, and her hand instinctively flew to her back, as if to hide the enormous diamond ring Jace had just presented.

"Elise?" Her voice was a choked gasp, a question and an accusation all at once.

The murmurs grew louder, forming a dissonant hum. "Elise Ryan? The lawyer?" "I thought she was dead." "The one who fabricated evidence?" "The fraudster, the one who ruined that poor family?" "Isn't she supposed to be in prison, or... dead?" The judgment in their voices was palpable, a wave of disgust washing over me.

Elise Ryan. Seven years ago, that name had been synonymous with brilliance, with an undefeated record in the courtroom. I was the golden girl of the legal world, a fierce advocate for justice. My name was whispered with respect, even awe.

I remembered the case that changed everything. My client's sister, brutally murdered. The killer, a man with a history of mental illness, but his actions were calculated, cold. My client's only demand: justice. A conviction. I poured my life into that case, meticulously gathering every shred of evidence, building an airtight argument.

On the day of the trial, I walked into the courtroom, confident. Until I saw who was representing the defense. Jace Bray. My husband.

I presented my evidence, irrefutable proof that the killer was sane, fully aware of his monstrous actions. Justice was within reach. My client was finally going to get some peace.

Then Jace stood. And presented another document. A document that proved my core evidence was a fabrication. A forgery. The paper trail, he claimed, led directly to my firm's server, my private computer, my digital footprint.

My blood ran cold. My face drained of color. I looked to the public gallery, to Katherine, who sat hunched, her head bowed, refusing to meet my eyes. It clicked then. The night before the trial, Katherine had been unusually insistent on helping me "organize" my files.

The verdict came swiftly. Insufficient evidence. The killer walked free. I was sentenced to three years for fabricating evidence. My career, my reputation, my life-all reduced to ashes in a single night. Jace, my husband, the man who had supposedly loved me, had used my downfall as his stepping stone, becoming a celebrated "golden-tongued" lawyer.

I was born with a curse. I see a shimmering, crimson timer above everyone's head, counting down to the exact moment of their death. I had twenty-four hours left to live. I spent my last day preparing a feast, a desperate plea for one final family dinner. With only minutes to spare, I called my eldest brother, Fredrick, my voice breaking. "Please, just come home," I sobbed. "I'm going to die tonight." His response was colder than the grave. "Are you really so desperate for attention that you'd stoop to such pathetic lies?" Then, I heard the click of the line going dead. I died alone at that table, surrounded by the food no one came to eat. But my death wasn't the end. It was the beginning of their nightmare, a personal hell of guilt they could never escape.
Pampered By The Sadistic Academy Villain Novel Cover

I woke up to the suffocating smell of copper and sulfur, my fingers wrapped around a blood-soaked leather whip. Hanging from an obsidian cross in front of me was a boy with silver hair and dead, golden eyes. His pale chest was torn open to the bone. I recognized those eyes immediately. I had spent three years describing them on my laptop. He was Kamari Monroe, the tragic, overpowered protagonist of my own web novel. And I wasn't just a bystander. I was Benedict Guerrero, the sadistic academy headmaster. The ultimate villain. A reel of images flashed in my mind: my original ending. Kamari, fully awakened, skinning me alive and burning my soul in a furnace for forty-nine days. My loyal attack dog, Gideon, stepped forward with a basin of glowing green liquid. "Headmaster, let me wake him up with this bone-rot acid so you can resume." If that acid hit Kamari, his hatred would become permanent. My gruesome death would be sealed. But if I broke character and apologized, the magical world would sense the shift, and Kamari would just think it was a sicker, more twisted trap. How was I supposed to survive a death sentence I wrote myself? I couldn't show weakness. I had to play the monster to survive. Suppressing my terror, I smashed the acid basin, healed his ruined flesh with agonizing dark magic, and lied straight to his face. "Someone had to be the monster to push you into the fire." This time, I will rewrite my own fate.
