Chapter 2

"This is Aunt Lydia. She's like my mom now," Rowan announced.

His voice carried over the clatter of trays and the chatter of fifty families at the Mother's Breakfast.

I stopped at the end of the table. Lydia's beige trench coat occupied the only chair beside my five-year-old son. Kael leaned against the gym wall with a coffee in his hand. He had heard every word.

He did not correct Rowan.

Mrs. Gable hurried over with a folding chair. "We can fit you at the corner, Luna Selena."

The chair wedged against the table leg, nearly three seats from Rowan.

I sat anyway.

"Ro," I said, "do you remember the week you turned four?"

He paused with a strawberry halfway to his mouth.

"You had a fever of a hundred and three. You held my sleeve every time you woke up because you were scared I would leave the room."

Lydia tore a corner from her napkin. "Selena, he is trying to enjoy breakfast."

"I am talking to my son."

Rowan shoved the strawberry into his mouth. "You always bring up old stuff when you want me to feel bad."

Kael finally stepped forward. "Do not turn this breakfast into a guilt lesson."

I looked at him. "He just introduced another woman as his mother."

"He said like his mom," Kael corrected. "You are choosing the most insulting version because you are already angry."

Lydia put both hands around her coffee cup. "I can leave if this is hurting you."

Rowan grabbed her sleeve. "No! I invited you."

I watched my son defend her place while his father defended the language. Neither one asked why I had been moved to the corner.

I finished half my coffee and left before the pancakes arrived.

At the Alpha House, I went straight to Kael's study and printed the school contact record. Lydia's new pickup clearance was not temporary. Kael had checked the box marked Extended Household Access, which granted her authority to collect Rowan from class, receive emergency alerts, and approve routine activity changes.

I carried the page downstairs.

Lydia stood in the east glass corridor, scrolling through her phone near the windows.

"You told me you were only helping with pickups," I said.

She looked at the form and smiled faintly. "Kael signed it. Ask him."

"I did. I am asking you now to stay out of the parent role."

"Rowan asked me to be there."

"He is five. Adults set boundaries."

Her expression changed.

The softness disappeared so quickly I almost wondered if I imagined it.

"You are terrified he likes me," Lydia said. "That is the real problem."

"No. I am angry because you accepted a card that said For Mom, sat in my school seat, and let my mate give you parental clearance without telling me."

"Maybe if you were less controlling, Rowan would not need someone easier to love."

I reached for her phone. "Record that again. Say it while Kael is in the room."

Lydia caught my wrist.

Her grip was stronger than I expected. She yanked my hand upward, dragging my knuckles close to her face. I twisted free and reached again for the phone on the window ledge.

Lydia glanced toward the black security camera mounted above the glass door.

Then she slapped herself.

Hard.

The crack echoed down the corridor.

She staggered backward and hit the wall, one palm flying to her reddening cheek.

I froze.

Footsteps thundered from the stairwell.

Kael rounded the corner with Rowan behind him.

"What happened?"

Lydia stared at me with wide, wet eyes. "I should not have pushed her. Selena was upset about the breakfast. I tried to explain, and she..."

She stopped there.

Kael looked at my raised hand, then at the camera.

"Pull the footage," I said immediately.

The security app loaded on his tablet. The clip began three seconds too late. It showed my arm up near Lydia's face, Lydia recoiling, and me reaching toward her again. The audio was missing.

I checked the timestamp. The file length was only seven seconds, even though the corridor camera recorded in sixty-second blocks. Someone had exported a fragment instead of opening the archive.

"That is cropped," I said. "Pull the full server file."

"The local feed is the official file," Kael replied, his jaw tightening.

"No, it is the convenience copy. Marcus can decrypt the raw hallway archive."

Lydia covered her cheek. "Please do not make this bigger. I know Selena did not mean to scare me."

Kael turned on me. "You raised your hand at a widow in our home over a school breakfast."

"I did not hit her."

"The camera shows your hand at her face."

"Because she grabbed my wrist."

Rowan stepped between Lydia and me.

He planted his small feet on the polished floor and glared up at me.

"Stop bullying her!"

"Rowan, move away from the argument."

"No!" His face went red. "If you keep being mean to Lydia, I will stop calling you Mom."

The words struck harder than the accusation.

Kael inhaled sharply, but he did not correct him.

I looked at my mate. "Say something."

Kael rubbed a hand over his face. "He is upset. Do not make his words into another crisis."

That was the moment something inside me went quiet.

Not because a five-year-old had found the cruelest threat he could use. Children test power. They copy what adults reward.

What broke me was that Kael heard our son turn my place as his mother into a weapon and chose to manage my reaction instead of the behavior.

I walked past them.

"Where are you going?" Kael called.

"To request the raw footage."

"Selena, let it go for tonight."

I did not stop.

In his study, I emailed Marcus, the pack security chief, a formal preservation request for the full east-corridor archive. Then I opened the bottom drawer of the desk.

The separation agreement I had pulled from Kael's safe after the Mother Box argument was still folded inside my work bag.

This time, I opened it and signed my name.
