Chapter 3

The air in the living room was thick enough to cut with a knife. Chloe held Mrs. Peterson steady, her gaze a blade aimed at the family across the room.

Richard Hayes, unnerved by the look in his stepdaughter's eyes, quickly regained his composure. He was the one in control. He pulled a file from his briefcase and slapped it down on the coffee table.

"This is your mother's will," he announced, his voice oozing false authority. "She left all her shares in SereneCare Pharmaceuticals to me, as your guardian and the executor of her estate."

He slid a single page and a pen across the table. "All you have to do is sign here, relinquishing your claims. I'll still provide you with a generous monthly allowance, of course." It was the posture of a king bestowing charity upon a beggar.

Jennifer, clutching her reddening cheek, smirked at Chloe, her eyes filled with vindictive pleasure.

Chloe didn't even glance at the documents. She knew her mother. Miranda Beaumont would never, ever leave her life's work in the hands of this man.

"And if I don't sign?" she asked, her voice dangerously calm.

Laura's voice dripped with condescending pity. "If you don't sign? Chloe, be reasonable. Your reputation is ruined. A disgraced heiress who spends her nights with strange men in hotels... Who is going to believe you?"

The words were a calculated strike, meant to remind Chloe of her shame and powerlessness.

Richard saw her flinch. He reached for his final weapon. He placed a heavy, ornate ebony box on the table with a dull thud.

"Your mother's ashes are in here."

The threat hung in the air, unspoken but absolute.

"Sign the papers, and you can take her. Give her a proper burial. Otherwise..."

Chloe's eyes locked on the box. Her body began to tremble. This was it. The final blow, designed to shatter her completely.

Just as the world began to fracture, she felt a firm grip on her hand. Mrs. Peterson was behind her, her fingers digging into Chloe's arm.

"Miss, don't believe them!" the old woman whispered, her voice urgent and barely audible. "The Madam is fine! She was taken away, she's safe!"

The words were a thunderclap in the silent, screaming world of Chloe's grief. She whipped her head around, staring into Mrs. Peterson's eyes. The housekeeper's frantic, desperate expression was not a lie. It was hope.

A tidal wave of pure, unadulterated joy crashed through her, washing away the despair. It was followed instantly by a rage so profound it was almost sublime.

They hadn't just tried to steal her inheritance. They had used the lie of her mother's death to torture her.

Chloe took a deep, steadying breath. When she looked up again, her eyes were terrifyingly serene.

She walked toward the coffee table. Richard smiled, a smug, victorious expression spreading across his face. He thought he had won.

Chloe picked up the will.

Then, with deliberate, methodical movements, she tore it into a hundred tiny pieces, letting them flutter to the floor like toxic confetti.

"You—!" Richard's smile froze.

She wasn't finished. She picked up the heavy, ebony box.

"You said my mother was in here?" she asked, a chilling smile playing on her lips as she looked at Richard and Laura's shocked faces. "Then I'll take her with me."

Before anyone could react, she swung the box with all her might, not at the wall, but straight at Richard's head.

He let out a pathetic yelp and scrambled backward. The box hit the wall behind him and shattered.

It was empty.

The lie was exposed. Laura and Jennifer shrieked as if they'd seen a ghost.

"Get out." Chloe's voice was low, but it carried the weight of an executioner's order. "Get out of my mother's house. And take your mistress and your bastard daughter with you."

Richard, sputtering with a mixture of fury and fear, opened his mouth to argue, but the words died in his throat. He took an involuntary step back, as if struck.

He shot her one last, venomous glare, then grabbed the hysterical Laura and the weeping Jennifer, and practically ran from the villa.

The front door slammed shut.

Silence.

The strength drained from Chloe's body. She sagged against the wall, gasping for air.

Mrs. Peterson rushed to her side, tears streaming down her face. "Oh, Miss Chloe, you gave me such a fright."

Chloe shook her head. She grabbed the housekeeper's hands, her own trembling. "Tell me," she pleaded, her voice cracking. "Tell me everything. What happened to my mother? Who took her?"

It was a new mystery, a new fight. But it was fueled by a single, glorious fact.

Her mother was alive. And that was the only hope she needed.
