Desperate, I accept a contract marriage with a bankrupt, paralyzed man, moving into his rat-infested Brooklyn apartment and working as a maid to pay his debts. Chapter 3

The silver quarter sliced through the air and struck Brodie squarely in the center of his chest. Brodie flinched, the small piece of metal hitting the floor with a sharp clink. He looked up, terrified, into Donovan's murderous eyes. "Was this your doing, Brodie?" Donovan's voice was dangerously quiet. He took a step forward, the silk robe parting slightly to reveal the fresh, bloody crescent-moon marks on his collarbone. "Did you send a swallow into my room?" Brodie scrambled backward, his hands raised in surrender. "No! I swear to God, Uncle Donovan! I was in the VIP lounge next door all night! I wouldn't dare send a woman to your bed, let alone an assassin!" Donovan's jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked visibly beneath his skin. He stared at the blood on the sheets. The woman had fought like a trained killer, yet she was a virgin. The contradiction gnawed at his sanity. Before Donovan could speak, Brodie's phone erupted in a frantic, shrill ringtone. Brodie fumbled it out of his pocket, his hands shaking. He pressed it to his ear. "What? Slow down." All the color drained from Brodie's face. He looked at Donovan, his voice cracking. "It's the hospital. NewYork-Presbyterian. It's Grandpa Theodore. He had a massive heart attack on Fifth Avenue." The murderous rage in Donovan's eyes instantly shattered, replaced by a cold, sharp panic. He didn't say a word. He grabbed his trousers and a black silk shirt from the chair, dressing in brutal, efficient movements. Brodie stumbled after him, rushing toward the door. In his panic, a heavy, antique pocket watch-the heirloom he had brought to officially break his engagement with Acacia-slipped from his jacket pocket and sank into the thick hallway carpet, unnoticed. Across the city, Acacia sprinted through the sliding glass doors of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. She still wore the damp, cheap black hoodie. She ignored the burning in her lungs and marched straight to the Intensive Care Unit reception desk. "Elmira Dillon. Bed 4," Acacia demanded, her voice hoarse. The triage nurse clicked her mouse, her eyes scanning the screen. She looked up, her expression hardening. "I'm sorry. The primary account holder, Bulah Dillon, has placed a strict restraining order on this file. No visitors allowed. Especially not you." Acacia's hands slammed flat onto the high counter. "She is my mother. Let me in." Two massive hospital security guards, their hands resting on their batons, stepped out from the corridor, blocking the double doors to the ICU. "Ma'am, you need to step back, or we will call the NYPD," the larger guard warned. Acacia's fingertips twitched. She calculated the distance to the guard's trachea. But the cold reality of her parole status crashed down on her. An assault charge meant a direct trip back to the black-site prison. Elmira would die alone. She gritted her teeth, backing away slowly. She retreated to a quiet corner near the vending machines in the main lobby. She pulled out a cracked, secondhand smartphone she had bought at a bodega. Her thumbs flew across the shattered screen, frantically pulling up the hospital's official patient portal. She typed in Elmira's identification number, desperate to find a loophole or an option to override the payment block. But the screen flashed a stark red error message. Bulah had placed a top-tier administrative lock on the account. Without the primary holder's physical authorization, the system wouldn't even let her view the outstanding balance, let alone pay it. The connection lagged. The cheap processor in the phone overheated against her palm. "Come on," she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. Suddenly, the screech of heavy tires echoed from the street outside. Acacia looked up. Six armored black Cadillac Escalades swerved into the hospital's emergency drop-off zone, completely blocking the entrance. Her survival instincts screamed. She shoved the phone into her pocket, pulled her hood low over her face, and moved swiftly toward the stairwell door. The glass doors of the lobby slid open. Donovan strode in, flanked by a dozen men in tactical suits. The sheer, suffocating pressure radiating from him made the entire bustling lobby fall dead silent. Acacia paused on the second-floor landing. She peered through the glass partition, looking down at the lobby. She saw the broad shoulders. She saw the collar of the black silk shirt. Her breath stopped, but not from recognition. A sudden, overwhelming wave of primal danger washed over her. The sheer, suffocating aura radiating from the man leading the group triggered every survival instinct she had honed in the black-site prison. She had no idea who this man was, but her tactical mind screamed at her to hide. Her mind raced. This wasn't just some Wall Street executive. The security detail, the armored convoy-this man commanded a private army, and being anywhere near his crosshairs was a death sentence. Down in the lobby, Donovan stopped mid-stride. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up. He felt the weight of someone watching him. He snapped his head up, his dark eyes locking onto the second-floor stairwell. Acacia threw herself flat against the cold concrete wall, her heart threatening to crack her ribs. She held her breath until her lungs burned. "Boss?" Liam asked, following Donovan's gaze. "Is something wrong?" Donovan stared at the empty glass partition for three agonizing seconds. "Nothing. Secure the floor." He turned and marched toward the VIP elevators. Acacia didn't wait. She bolted down the back service stairs, bursting out through the loading dock doors and throwing herself into the back of a passing yellow cab. As the cab sped away, her burner phone buzzed. A text message from an unknown number. It was a photo of Elmira, pale and fragile, a ventilator tube taped to her mouth. Below the photo was a message from Chesnee: Tick tock, convict. Three days to find a husband, or we pull the plug. Acacia gripped the phone so hard the cracked screen splintered further. She needed a husband. Fast. On the top floor of the hospital, Donovan stood over Theodore's bed. The old man looked frail, but his monitors were stable. The chief of cardiology wiped sweat from his brow. "Sir, it's a miracle. If someone hadn't performed such immediate, high-quality chest compressions on the street to keep the oxygen flowing, your father would have been dead before the ambulance arrived." Donovan's eyes narrowed. "Chest compressions?" "Yes. High-intensity CPR. It's a standard technique, but whoever did it had the stamina and precision of a machine. They kept his brain alive when his heart gave out." Donovan turned to Liam. "Get the traffic cam footage from Fifth Avenue. Now." Ten minutes later, Liam returned, his face slick with nervous sweat. "Boss... the cameras at that intersection were hit by a localized EMP attack. Exactly during the five-minute window of the incident, the electromagnetic pulse corrupted the footage, completely scrambling the savior's face." Donovan's thumb instinctively rubbed the side of his index finger. A woman who fought like an assassin, and a street savior who moved like a ghost. "Interesting," Donovan murmured, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips.
