Chapter 1

Everly POV

The cold hit my throat first at five in the morning while the arena sat almost black except for one strip of light across the ice. Air carried the sharp bite of ice, dust, and metal in a space that felt empty and quiet and mine alone.

I pushed off, and the blades cut a clean hiss. Every stride pushed against the dull throb in my ankle that had followed me for ten months through doctors and silence and headlines that called my career finished at twenty-two. I refused those words because the ice still answered when I asked.

I flipped backward with arms locked and core tight, then jumped through one turn, two, three. The landing jarred through the boot but the ankle held. I kept the glide and let momentum carry me while soft music leaked from

my phone into the dark.

Then the sound came heavy and fast like a train without tracks. I looked up and saw a dark shape tear down the far side of the rink in helmet, pads, and suit, with arms pumping and head down. Knox Mercer, short-track star and national-team hopeful already known for leaving marks at twenty-eight, was in my lane and closing hard.

“Move!”

My stomach dropped as I tried to stop. The ankle gave, and balance vanished. He saw too late, tried to turn, and lost the edge.

His body slammed into mine with shoulder meeting waist. We spun as the boards rushed up. The impact knocked the air out of both of us until we hit and slid and stopped in a tangled heap against the wall.

Silence rushed back in while I lay on my back with his weight pressing me flat and his chest against my ribs. Heat bled through the layers.

His helmet was gone, and blue eyes stared wide and too close, with breath hot on my skin. Hands braced on either side of my head, and he did not move.

“Get off me.” I shoved at his chest and found it solid and unmoving.

He looked down and tracked the sequins on my dress first before his eyes rose to my face. Something flickered there that could have been recognition or irritation or both. His body stayed heavy and the contact burned in a way the crash had not.

“You,” he said with voice low and rough. “What the hell are you doing in the high-performance lane?”

Anger cut through the shock. “This is my ice from five to seven reserved. You almost took out my legs.”

He shifted onto one knee but stayed close, pulled the gloves off with his teeth, and tossed them aside. “I’m prepping for nationals. You’re standing in the way. You should train with the kids and not here.”

I shoved harder. He rocked a fraction and then stood so the light behind him threw his shape into shadow.

I forced myself up while the ankle screamed. I locked my knees and refused the limp. Distance did not help because the space between us still felt charged.

“I was in the middle of a jump when you came around the corner with your head down. You do not own this place, Mercer.”

“My family pays for this facility.” He stepped closer with cold eyes. “I skate where I want. You’re the problem with loud music and ridiculous clothes and little dances that chew up the surface for people who need real ice.”

The words landed like a slap. “Real skill? I have an international medal. You’ve been in trouble half your career for being too aggressive. You don’t look, and you don’t care who you hit, and you’re not in control.”

His jaw flexed. He grabbed the helmet and closed the last step until I had to tip my head back. Heat rolled off him with size and force and the memory of his body on mine. I did not step away.

“Say that again.”

“You’re a hazard.” I kept my voice steady. “A wrecking ball on skates.”

We stood locked like that with breath shared and eyes hard. The argument had teeth, but under it something else pulled tight with awareness and friction of the kind that made the next second feel dangerous for reasons that had nothing to do with the boards.

“Hey! Both of you—cut it out!”

Gary came through the doors at a slide, with boots loud on the ice and papers crushed in both hands. He looked pale and shaken and did not glance at the bruises or the way we stood too close.

“Gary, tell him to check the schedule.” I kept my eyes on Knox. “He took my ice.”

“I don’t care about the damn schedule!” Gary’s voice cracked as he reached the gate and gripped it with hands that trembled. “Get off the ice. Both of you. Get your stuff and leave.”

Knox turned with irritation sharp. “I’ve got an hour left. Coach is here in ten.”

“Your coach isn’t coming.” Gary’s tone went flat, and he looked at me with something like pity. “Nobody’s coming. The city inspectors just left after they checked the roof and found a massive structural failure.”

Cold slid through my chest. “What?”

He pointed upward. “Main beam’s cracked and the whole roof’s shifting. Building’s a safety hazard. They’re pulling the permit effective immediately.”

The words hung in the air: safety hazard and no permit.

“You can’t close the rink.” My voice dropped while my skates felt heavy as stone. “The competition is in six weeks, and every other sheet in the city is fully booked. If I lose this ice, I’m done because I have nowhere else.”

Gary stared at his boots and would not meet my eyes. “Nothing I can do, Everly. Police lock the gates at six.”
