Chapter 3

The hotel charged by the night, and courage did not pay the bill.

On Monday morning, I wore the only suit I had packed and covered the blisters on my heels with bandages. The jacket was seven years old. It had fit me before pregnancy, before nursing, before I learned to eat dinner standing over the sink because everyone else always needed something.

I could barely button it.

Still, I looked like a professional if I did not breathe too deeply.

Hayes Wellness occupied the top six floors of a glass building downtown. I had applied at two in the morning, not noticing the company was part of Hayes Global, where Ethan served as finance director.

I noticed when Julian Hayes walked into the interview room.

I had seen him twice at company dinners. At thirty-six, he was younger than most executives of his rank and far less silent. He spoke to assistants, servers, drivers—everyone. Ethan once complained that Julian could turn a five-minute elevator ride into a friendship.

Julian glanced at my résumé, then at me. "Mrs. Cole."

My stomach dropped.

"Claire Bennett," I corrected, too quickly. "I mean, legally it's still Cole, but—I'm sorry. I didn't realize this was your division. I should go."

I stood. Pain shot through my heel.

Julian noticed my flinch. He noticed too much.

"Sit down before you bleed on my very expensive carpet."

I stared at him.

"That was a joke," he said. "Mostly. The carpet really is expensive."

Despite everything, a breath of laughter escaped me.

He pointed to the chair. "Your proposal on gastrointestinal nutrition is the reason you're here. Not your husband. I didn't know Ethan was married until the winter gala, and I didn't know his wife had a master's degree until this morning."

"I haven't worked in seven years."

"Your license is active. You completed forty-eight hours of continuing education last year. You designed meal programs for the Westbridge Mothers' Center as a volunteer."

I looked down. "How did you know that?"

"It was on your résumé. I read it. Revolutionary management technique."

He asked precise questions after that. Within minutes, my fear made room for knowledge. I explained elimination diets, adherence rates, and why shame made patients lie about food. He challenged one of my proposed intake forms. I challenged him back.

When I realized what I had done, I stopped.

"Sorry."

"For being right? Terrible habit. We'll work on it."

At the end, he offered me a salary high enough to make my pulse jump.

"This is too much."

"It is what the role pays."

"Ethan will think—"

"Ethan does not approve my payroll."

I folded my hands to hide their trembling. Income meant an apartment. A lawyer. A chance to keep Noah.

"I accept."

For the first week, I remained at the hotel. Then Ethan canceled the family card I had used for groceries and sent a single message.

Come home when you're finished with this performance.

That night, the hotel declined my payment.

I was sitting in the lobby with my suitcase when Julian walked through after a meeting. I tried to hide behind a potted palm. He stopped anyway.

"Claire, are you being hunted by the plant?"

Humiliation heated my face. "The hotel made a mistake."

He took in the suitcase, the red warning on my phone, and the way I would not meet his eyes.

"My sister is recovering from surgery," he said. "Her doctor wants her on a structured diet. I need a live-in consultant for four weeks. Separate guest suite. Written contract. Additional pay."

"You invented that job in ten seconds."

"Eight. Sophie really did have surgery. She also believes coffee is breakfast. You would be saving a life."

I wanted to refuse. Living in Ethan's boss's house would look terrible. But the shelter nearest my office had a waiting list, and the ache in my feet had become a hot pulse.

"Four weeks," I said.

"Four weeks. And Claire? You do not owe me gratitude. It is work."

Julian's townhouse was warm, crowded with books, and nothing like Ethan's perfect gray rooms. Sophie Hayes opened the door in pajamas, one hand pressed to the healing incision on her abdomen.

She looked from my suitcase to Julian's face.

"You finally brought home a woman?"

"A dietitian," he said.

"She's gorgeous. You should marry her before she learns about your personality."

I nearly dropped my bag.

Julian sighed. "This is my adult younger sister, who survived an appendectomy only to be murdered by me tonight."

Sophie grinned. "Hi, future sister-in-law."

"Please ignore her," he told me.

I had forgotten what teasing sounded like when it was not designed to cut.

The next evening, I cooked ginger chicken, soft rice, and roasted carrots. Sophie ate two servings. Julian asked why the ginger helped nausea, listened to the full answer, and then washed the pans without being asked.

I stood beside the counter, confused.

"You don't have to do that."

"I dirtied a plate. This is the known cure."

"Ethan never—" I stopped.

Julian dried his hands. "You don't have to explain him to me."

Three days later, Sophie came grocery shopping with me. We were comparing yogurt labels when fingers closed hard around my wrist.

I gasped.

Ethan stood behind me.

His face looked carved from stone, but his grip tightened until my bones ground together.

"You're living with Hayes."

"Let go."

"You left your son to play house with my boss?"

People turned. Heat crawled up my neck.

"I'm working."

"At his home? Do you hear yourself?"

I tried to pull free. Pain shot to my elbow. "Ethan, you're hurting me. Please stop."

He leaned closer. "You're coming home."

The old instinct rose inside me: become smaller, become calmer, do not embarrass him.

Then I remembered the rain running into my shoes. Noah shouting that I hurt everyone. Vanessa sitting in my chair.

"No."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"She said let go." Sophie stepped between us and raised her phone. A red recording light blinked. "I have your face, your hand, and her asking you to stop. Want me to call the police too?"

Ethan released me.

Blood rushed back into my fingers with sharp pins of pain.

"You have no idea what she is doing," he told Sophie.

"I know what you're doing."

Ethan looked at me. "When Noah understands you chose a stranger over him, don't blame me."

The words found the deepest wound and pressed.

My knees weakened. I gripped the cart.

Sophie waited until he left, then gently asked, "Can I touch you?"

No one in my family had ever asked that.

I nodded.

She put an arm around me while I shook between the dairy case and a display of orange juice.

That evening, Julian saw the bruises forming around my wrist. His easy smile disappeared.

"Tell me what you want me to do."

Not I will handle it. Not You should have listened. Not Go home and stop making trouble.

I stared at him. "You believe me?"

"Claire." His voice softened. "I can see his fingerprints."

Tears flooded my eyes so suddenly I turned away.

"I don't know what I want."

"Then we start there. You don't have to know tonight."

For seven years, every silence in my marriage had been a punishment.

Julian sat across the kitchen from me and filled this one with gentle, ridiculous stories until my hands stopped trembling.
