Chapter 4

Claire Whitfield's office sat on the twenty-third floor of a glass tower downtown. Floor-to-ceiling windows. Minimalist furniture. A desk so clean it looked like a stage prop.

She stood when I walked in. Mid-forties. Sharp gray suit. Handshake like a contract being signed.

"Ms. Hansen. Please, sit."

I sat. She stayed standing for a moment, reading me the way I read load-bearing walls. Then she settled into her chair and folded her hands on the desk.

"I read the complaint," she said. "Twice."

I waited.

"It's garbage," she continued. "Coercive litigation dressed up as contract law. He's not trying to win. He's trying to make you broke and tired enough to come back."

I felt something loosen in my chest. Just a fraction. "Can he?"

"Make you broke?" She tilted her head. "Depends on how long you let him try. Make you come back?" She smiled. Thin. Sharp. "Not while I'm breathing."

I liked her immediately.

She pulled a yellow legal pad toward her and clicked a pen. "Here's what he doesn't understand. The moment he filed this lawsuit, he opened himself up to discovery. Every document. Every email. Every wire transfer. If there's dirt, we get to dig for it."

"There's dirt," I said.

She looked up. "How much?"

I slid the folder across the desk. The procurement records. The wire transfers. The property deed in Ariyah Ford's name. She flipped through it slowly, her expression unchanging.

When she finished, she set the folder down and leaned back in her chair.

"Ms. Hansen," she said quietly. "Do you want to settle this quietly and walk away? Or do you want to bury him?"

I thought about Grandma Hansen. About the building that folded. About the promise I'd made at her funeral.

I thought about Reed standing next to the concrete mixer, smiling because he thought I'd be back.

"I want the truth on record," I said. "I want everyone to know what he did."

Claire smiled. A real one this time.

"Then we're going to get along just fine." She pulled the legal pad closer. "He handed us the shovel. Now we dig."

We spent the next two hours building the strategy. Discovery requests. Subpoenas. A timeline of every substitution, every transfer, every lie. By the time I left her office, the sun was setting over Elliott Bay.

I felt lighter than I had in weeks.

The email arrived three days later.

Burner address. No subject line. Just two sentences.

*I worked on the Hansen project. I need to talk to you.*

I stared at it for a long time. Then I forwarded it to Claire with a single question: *Real or trap?*

She called me ten minutes later.

"Could be either," she said. "But if it's real, we need him. Can you meet somewhere public? Somewhere with witnesses?"

"Yes."

"Good. I'll set it up. And Ms. Hansen?" She paused. "Bring nothing. Say nothing about what you know. Let him talk first."

We chose a coffee shop in Fremont. Busy. Loud. The kind of place where nobody paid attention to anyone.

I got there early and sat by the window. Claire arrived five minutes later and took a table across the room. Close enough to intervene. Far enough to stay invisible.

The man who walked in at two o'clock looked like he hadn't slept in days.

Early thirties. Wrinkled button-down. Eyes that moved too fast, scanning the room before they landed on me. He walked over and sat down without asking.

"Ms. Hansen?"

I nodded.

He exhaled. "I'm Daniel Reeves. I'm a project manager at Sullivan Development."

"Okay."

"I signed off on the material substitutions for your house." He said it fast. Like ripping off a bandage. "Reed told me it was standard cost optimization. That you'd approved it. I didn't question him because—" He stopped. Swallowed. "Because I needed the job. And he's Reed Sullivan."

I didn't say anything. Just watched him.

"Then I heard about the lawsuit," he continued. "And I couldn't sleep. Because those materials—" His voice cracked. "Ms. Hansen, those materials aren't safe. Not for a residence. Not in a seismic zone. If there's an earthquake—"

"I know," I said quietly.

He looked at me. Really looked. And I saw it. The same thing I'd felt standing in that trailer with the procurement records open on my lap.

Guilt. And the need to make it right.

"I have documents," he said. "Shadow contracts. Emails between Reed and the suppliers. An audio recording from a site meeting where he told Ariyah the substitutions were 'our little secret.'"

My heart kicked against my ribs. "You recorded him?"

"I record all my site meetings. Company policy. I didn't realize what I had until—" He stopped. "Until I went back and listened."

I glanced toward Claire. She was watching us over the rim of her coffee cup. I turned back to Daniel.

"Why are you telling me this?"

He looked down at his hands. "Because I have a daughter. She's four. And if someone cut corners on her house—" His voice broke. "I couldn't live with myself."

I sat with that for a moment. Then I reached across the table and wrote Claire's number on a napkin.

"Call her," I said. "Tell her everything you just told me."

He took the napkin. His hand shook.

"He's going to come after me," he said.

"Probably," I said. "But you'll survive it. And you'll be able to sleep."

He nodded. Then he stood and walked out.

I sat there for a long time after he left. Claire came over and slid into the seat across from me.

"That," she said quietly, "is how we win."

I looked at her. "What do we do now?"

She smiled. "Now? We dig."
