Chapter 1

The familiar scent of pine and morning dew should have felt like coming home. Instead, as I stepped out of the sleek black car that had picked me up from the airport, the Moonveil Pack house loomed before me like a stranger's dwelling. Four years. Four long years of studying pack management in European academies, learning diplomacy and alliance strategies, all in preparation for this moment—my return as the future Luna of one of the most powerful pack alliances on the continent.

My wolf, Silver, stirred restlessly beneath my skin. *Something's wrong,* she whispered, her voice tight with unease. *The scents are... different.*

I pushed down her concerns, attributing them to my own nerves. Of course things would feel different after four years away. People change. Packs evolve. But as I approached the grand entrance, my heart hammered against my ribs with an anticipation that felt increasingly hollow.

The massive oak doors opened before I could reach for the handle, and there he stood—Alpha Leo King, my fated mate, the man I'd dreamed about every lonely night abroad. His dark hair was longer now, touching his collar, and his imposing frame filled the doorway with that commanding presence that had always made my knees weak. Those amber eyes that used to warm like honey when they looked at me now regarded me with a coolness that made my breath catch.

"Saige." His voice carried the formal tone he used with pack business, not the intimate warmth I'd expected after years of separation. "Welcome home."

No embrace. No passionate reunion kiss. No whispered words of how much he'd missed me. Just that single word—welcome—delivered like I was a visiting dignitary rather than his mate returning home.

"Leo." I managed to keep my voice steady despite the confusion churning in my stomach. "It's good to be back."

He stepped aside to let me enter, and I caught his scent—that familiar mixture of cedar and rain that used to comfort me. But underneath it lurked something else, something that made Silver pace anxiously. Another scent, floral and cloying, that didn't belong.

*Female,* Silver growled. *Another female has been here. Recently.*

I forced myself to smile as Leo gestured toward his office. "We need to talk," he said, his tone still maddeningly formal. "There are... developments you need to be aware of."

The pack house felt different as we walked through familiar corridors. Colder. The usual warmth and bustling energy seemed muted, replaced by an undercurrent of tension that set my teeth on edge. Pack members we passed offered polite nods instead of the enthusiastic welcomes I'd expected. Even Marcus Kane, Leo's Beta, barely met my eyes when he greeted me in the hallway.

Leo's office looked the same—rich mahogany furniture, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, the massive desk where he conducted pack business. But the atmosphere felt charged with unspoken words and hidden meanings. He moved to stand behind his desk rather than coming to sit beside me on the leather couch where we used to plan our future together.

"Four years is a long time," he began, his fingers drumming against the polished wood surface. "Things have... changed since you've been gone."

"Changed how?" The question came out sharper than I intended, but something in his manner was setting off every alarm bell I possessed.

Leo reached into his desk drawer and withdrew a manila folder, thick with documents. When he set it on the desk between us, I noticed his hands weren't quite steady. "There have been some irregularities discovered in the pack's financial records. Serious irregularities."

My blood ran cold. "What kind of irregularities?"

"Embezzlement. Misappropriation of pack funds. The evidence points to..." He paused, his amber eyes finally meeting mine with something that might have been regret. "To your father."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I shot to my feet, my chair scraping against the hardwood floor. "That's impossible. My father would never—"

"The evidence is conclusive, Saige." Leo's voice carried that Alpha authority that brooked no argument, but I caught the slight tremor underneath. "Bank records, forged signatures, offshore accounts. It's all there."

I stared at him, searching his face for any sign of the man who used to hold me while I cried over childhood disappointments, who promised me forever under the full moon. Instead, I found a stranger wearing Leo's face.

"What do you want?" The question escaped as barely a whisper.

Leo's jaw tightened. "Transfer your Alpha bloodline inheritance to Freyja Murray. Officially recognize her as the rightful heir to your father's position and assets. Do this, and the evidence stays sealed. Refuse..." He gestured to the folder. "And it goes before the Pack Council at the next full moon."

Freyja Murray. My half-sister. The illegitimate daughter my father had acknowledged but never fully embraced into our family circle. The name hit me like ice water, and suddenly Silver's earlier unease made perfect sense.

That floral scent clinging to Leo's clothes. The coldness in his eyes. The formal distance where there should have been passionate reunion.

*He's been with her,* Silver snarled. *I can smell her all over him.*

My knees nearly buckled as the full implications crashed over me. This wasn't just about fabricated evidence or inheritance disputes. This was about betrayal on a level I'd never imagined possible.

"I need time to think," I managed to say, proud that my voice didn't shake.

Leo nodded curtly. "You have until tomorrow night. The choice is yours, Saige. Your father's reputation... or Freyja's rightful place."

As I turned to leave his office, my mind was already racing. Silver's enhanced senses, sharpened during my years abroad, were telling me a story I didn't want to believe. But I had to know the truth.

I had to know exactly how deep this betrayal went.
